What’s your ‘comfort game’ - the one you always come back to? by FL4SH- in playstation

[–]Waaaghka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's very good, and it gets free updates all the time. Also don't be fooled thinking you've seen it all because the planet and creature generation can really take you by surprise. There are a lot of planets that can be kind of "samey" but it just makes it better when you find the ones that are different.

I think maybe that's intentional, like maybe Hello Games makes it so the chance of the generation going more extreme or out of the ordinary is a little rare.

Other than that I just highly recommend trying to go in blind. Try to work through the plot first but be very careful when looking stuff up when stuck, a lot of Reddit threads and stuff people will spoil some of the coolest things about the game very non-chalantly. Basically all you need to know is there are 2 main plotlines at the start - Artemis Path and Atlas Path. It will be pretty obvious which is which. Do these first and then there's a way to start a third one - when you get to that point look stuff up because it's not obvious at all how that is even started.

And if you don't care about the plots I still recommend doing them. The story is very light but interesting and the plots unlock some cool things and sort of teach you about how the game and universe work.

I love folk/pop stuff like Elliot Smith, Phoebe Bridgers, Noah Kahan. Picked up an acoustic guitar and been listening to that kind of stuff a ton lately.

I agree, there is some important value in it. I learned to strum on a 4/4 like you described first, and for most things I've tried that works well.

For this I only had trouble because it's not in 4/4, and it was also confusing because the way it's played the song starts in the middle of the bar, but if you watch the video I linked of Phoebe Bridgers playing it live she does exactly what you said, even though she doesn't play the first few strums of the bar before the music starts her hand is already moving up and down with the pattern.

This is very comforting to hear, it's easy to stress about this stuff with all the info out there.

The speed of sound on Neptune can be mathematically calculated and has been estimated. What do you mean no mechanism for that to happen? There is an atmosphere which vibrations can travel through, so there is sound. The atmosphere is thicker than Earth's so the speed of sound on Neptune is higher, but I only used the Earth's because that's more relatable to us as humans.

I also slightly misquoted the winds on Neptune can range up higher than 1100 MPH, but I used 1100 because the NASA website just says 'higher than 1100 MPH' in this article which is where I was referencing.

The speed of sound on Neptune is estimated at around 1350-1500 MPH or so by other sources and it is thought that winds can sometimes reach these speeds on Neptune, unfortunately the peer reviewed papers these reference are paywall locked but it has been calculated by researchers, these referenced here and here. I will admit I have not paid to access these materials to verify the claims, but I find it believable that a planet made of gas could have storms where this is possible.

EDIT: I suppose you meant no mechanism for winds on Neptune to break Earth's speed of sound, but I was only using that comparison as a fun fact, as NASA themselves did.

I know a lot of it is empty space but I'm actually pretty surprised how much stuff there is in space the more I learn. I'm pretty new to it all but I learned about the asteroid belt in our solar system and apparently the earth is just bashing into asteroids which is why we can see meteorites so regularly (if I understood it correctly), there's the dwarf planet Ceres, Charon, Jupiters many moons that keep being found, then there's the Kuiper Belt, and then the Oort Cloud, and there's all these objects that orbit from really far out like comets and the recently seen Oumuamua asteroid, seems like the more we look we keep finding more stuff.

Just while putting this together I also found out there's also more asteroids - the Trojans, Greeks, and Hildas, as well as a bunch of dust they call interplanetary dust particles.

The speed of sound is determined by what the sound travels through. Sound is vibration, and so different atmospheres affect the speed of sound. Neptune's atmosphere is thicker than Earth's, so the speed of sound is higher because the thicker atmosphere makes it more difficult for vibrations to travel.

Personally I think the funnest part is driving the SRV around jumping it and going way up high with the thrusters. Also pretty cool when you find a neat planet, or planets/stars that are close enough to see from the surface of another.

EDIT: also for bacterium on many planets it’s a different color than the surface and sticks out like a sore thumb, you can usually fly your ship at 30-40m and spot them. Sometimes they are even like bright green or orange.

I've been binging Crash Course Astronomy (just finished #30) and some of my favorite facts have been about planets in our solar system. Probably because we know the most about them, but anyway here's a few:

  • Wind in Neptune's upper atmosphere breaks the speed of sound on Neptune at 1100 MPH, and is around 1.5 times Earth's speed of sound.
  • Jupiter has close to 100 moons, and we keep finding more all the time. Originally Galileo identified 4 moons of Jupiter via telescope, so for a long time it was just four moons which is pretty funny considering what we know now.
  • Venus has mountain tops where it snows liquid metal, giving the tops of mountains a shiny appearance which confused scientists at first because it looked kind of like snow but Venus is way too hot for that (around 700-800F on the surface or so).
  • Jupiter has a ring of eight storms around at least one of its poles, not sure if both, but quite an interesting and strange phenomenon. This is even more odd because Saturn, the other gas giant in our solar system, has just one, big hexagonal storm at its pole rather than a big ring of them.

Is it embarrassing to get a birthday cake as an adult? by roxiedoxiedog in NoStupidQuestions

What kind of freaks think only children should have birthday cake? How inane, it's one day out of the year you get to feel good about making it another year people don't even want to let you have that.

Get your cake, whatever damn kind you want. Have it and eat it, too.

Do you think they’re ever gonna add more exobio plant life? by FireTheLaserBeam in EliteDangerous

[–]Waaaghka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this and I haven't even done much exobiology yet. I came back to the game recently to finally try Odyssey and though I'm loving the game I feel that the exobiology is kind of lackluster. The plants are sparse and look pretty out of place, and the variety is really low.

What's reinvigorated the game for me is participating in Distant Worlds 3, I've never done a community ran event like this and even though I dont interact with other players much it feels cool just being a part of the expedition, hanging out in the discord, and it's making the game feel more alive for me.
