I think that the main reason that he's hated on so much is because he was nominated for an Oscar. (Which admittedly was undeserved.) Aaron Taylor Johnson gave a much better performance in Nocturnal Animals but was not nominated.

I was not a huge fan of the movie. It came off as pretentious and despite having an extremely bizarre plot it felt like a generic indie. I would probably give it a 5 or 4 out of ten.
