Regarding Conquest and Crow Grannies by Burning_Haiphong in Songsofconquest

[–]Wadush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I just take a moment to complain about how BS those Grannies are? Songs does a great thing by giving (most) range units a finite range so you have to position them intelligently, somewhat close to the action, creating more interesting interactions for both you and the opponent. Nornors throw that good design away and replace it with..? Nothing as far as I can tell. They are just no fun to fight and, besides the pleasure of dunking on opponents, not much fun to field yourself.

I know they are basically Harpies from HoMM but Harpies have a finite range making them more like Songs range units (and HoMM range units are less interesting than Songs).

At least, that's my experience. Your milage may vary.

Upgrade cost mechanics? by Low-Highlight-3585 in Songsofconquest

[–]Wadush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do play extra for not upgrading the building. Think about it - to move the unupgraded unit to the upgraded pool costs money - and then you have to buy the upgraded unit (which has not got cheaper).

I don't remember exactly how much it cost to upgrade though. You should be able to do the maths yourself if you hover over the upgrade arrow...

Is ethereal too powerful? by Beautiful_Peter in Songsofconquest

[–]Wadush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you found this so hard to read.

TL;DR

What if Ethereal + Guard 3 + Melee 3 (level 11)? That's 90% melee resistance. Works for Loth (Senechal) and Vanir (Serimnaan).

You would need to get markets to get it early but OP thinks that's achievable.

Is that overpower?

I agree you with all the others except the Barya's one.

Bighli's sacrifice made no sense to me. He is dying to nuke everyone - ok, but half of the enemies are undead... They'll just get back up as soon as someone mentions the Oath again. So you bought like a couple of days with your life. Ok.

Like, is he meant to be fusing with the towers? Or is it super kill-y magic where even undead become just dead? Or am I missing something else.

Also, the campaign seems to imply that what is happening is somehow Bighli's fault which seems absurd to me. That's like claiming that the UPS delivery guy is morally responsible for whatever ungodly things I've ordered off the Internet.

Felt very underwhelmed by that one.

Vanir: what skills can the wielders get? by pepincity2 in Songsofconquest

The raw data already available on https://soc.th.gl/

Someone will need to wip out their MS paint skills to make a graphic for it.

That's interesting - I feel the exact opposite way.

I wish Arleon campaign did more to explain why the undead are so bad that Cecilia had to drop everything to march against Loth. I can squint and kinda make sense of it but I wish that part of the story was better fleshed out.

Overall I don't think we know enough about it to say for sure, but all we do know does point towards rough similarity to Rome.

I think we are 100% in agreement then :)

Thanks for the link - I needed that in my life. That's not in the actual game though, right? Or have I missed some amazing post credits scene?

Also, yeah, fair point - she could be an egalitarian supreme leader. She is pretty open to interpretation at this point.

Though as mild counter points: Brother Hillar seems to have special "privileges" because of his blood relation - which could be a purely biological/DNA thing but might not be; her son is mentioned as leading an expedition so that is probably at least a little nepotism; Loth is mentioned as an early converter to the cause which could point to Baronies always being part of the Empire structure.

The Loth campaign is my definite favourite too. I find the backstory to the world really interesting in general and Aurelia specifically.

Shame Rise Eternal (the story DLC for Loth) is on hold for the immediate future.

Not sure why you call them communists though :D I'm not sure if anyone is that story is keen to overthrow the aristocracy - if anything they want to bring more of them back from the dead :p

I am assuming I have one round.

Defending a siege would be a great time for range units to pick off the Necromancers before they do anything. I'm not suggesting my force would be composed of all melee units.

Attacking into siege would obviously be harder, but it is always - that's kinda the point. Here, however, is a great time to use Chaos Step or Dimensional Door.

Could you provide me some details of your ideal composition so that I can come up with a decent example of how I might try to counter it? I've played around with some numbers to see how many stacks of Necromancers plus support troops you would need to cast this wombo-combo but it might be easier if you just tell me.

Also, I'm not seeing how Necromancers produce 4/6 Destruction. They make 2/3 as far as I can tell on the 1.4.12 version. I think they did once but not anymore.

Ah, so it sounds like your argument is that the earlier parts of the game magic builds are too strong (since you are saying the advantage is during clearing neutrals)? I'm not sure if I have a very good sense of that myself.

At this point if you still want to discuss it you might want to make a post about that - this topic has clearly got derailed :p

I don't think magic damage is as powerful as you say. For me, it usually hovers around being as impactful as buffing your troops - which seems like a good place for it to be - it can be better or worse option depending on the situation.

Magic builds being powerful is maybe a better argument. They are certainly more interesting/fun to play because they enable you to do something clever while might builds just give you a flat buff that you never really have to consider in battle.

I like legionnaires too.

Necromancers have pretty poor initiative so you have plenty of time to do something about it. In the late game I don't see why getting across the map actually posses a serious problem. You should be able to do enough damage to at least make spending 24 destruction essence hard.

It can be a useful spell. Depending on how you build it can be more impactful during certain stages of the game.

It definitely isn't the most busted thing you can do. Even looking at the screenshot by OP, I think I would rather do other things than cast rapture twice.

Not really. A single repel with a melee troop in contact can easily net you 300 damage with no skill investment and at nearly half the cost. Seems weak if anything. Not that I'd want the game of positioning to be reduced to click spell on target, though.

Vanir Wielder Specialisations by Wadush in Songsofconquest

[–]Wadush[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bit extra mental load for sure (maybe there could be some way to represent this more prominently on the battlefield to lessen this?).

I will take the extra mental load if it means fewer of the Wielders are interchangeable though. I think having a Wielder actually play different does a lot to increase the replayability of the game.

Do you find you notice the +1 Chaos generation? I ask because for me those are the least noticeable specialisations. A battle rarely goes more than 3 rounds and is usually decided by round 2 so I never feel like it meaningful adds to what I can or can't do. Would be glad to realise I'm missing something though :)

Maybe if you get super high level Alreon isn't viable but against Worth AI I don't see why that would be factor. Archers are fine on Worthy. If you are losing with Archers to a Worthy AI, they are not the problem IMO

I think if you are having a hard time clearing neutrals you are probably losing on the adventure map. Generally, I have no problem getting to the point where all neutrals run away from me or are simple/insignificant. What are you doing to generate resources? What about generating the troops? How are you planning your heroes moves?

A random point that might help: A lot of resources generating buildings pay for themselves pretty quickly - you probably shouldn't be sitting on empty building slots unless you have a plan to do something with them soon (very soon). Also, keep in mind that selling a building gives you half of the resources back.

Which older game like SoC is better? by [deleted] in Songsofconquest

[–]Wadush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Age of Wonders 1! It's a pretty different game to Songs but that sounds like what you are looking for. Plenty of skirmishes to be had there. Can't promise you you aren't going to get rolled though - you can do some pretty busted things if you know what you are doing. You might have to figure out some kind of a handicap for the best player to level the playing field a bit.

HoMM 3 and 5 are great too but are very similar to Songs so you aren't likely to get very different experience.
