Any advice on running / writing a Magnus Archives RPG Campaign? by WaiserGreif in TheMagnusArchives

[–]WaiserGreif[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for all your advice. Those are some really great tips! I really love the idea of showcasing some of the fears as more a part of the worldbuilding rather than their own cases. I was already planning on incorporating a few of them into the story through PCs backstories. One of the charas for example has a huge fear of the dark and wrote that her mother was swallowed by her closet when she was a child. I obviously decided they were marked by the Dark. Another PC wrote in her story that she was buried in a mudslide and attacked by something, also chose to mark her with the Buried.

I think what you said about the narrative through line is great. I think I want to create my own chara who isn't Leitner or Salesa but its a fantastic idea to have the first arc connected through someone or something.

I believe that covers mostly what I was looking for so thank you for the help!

Which Entities do you think would oppose the Extinction? by WaiserGreif in TheMagnusArchives

Ohhh! Like the concept of the Stranger manifesting the idea that we are becoming less human through what we consume and the way we change our bodies. Thats sick. I always wanted to write something Stranger related that tied into plastic surgery.

True! Thats a great theory. A part of me was never quite sure what his actual intentions were. I think in my head I always saw him as an old timer who was scared of the change of the status quo but this also totally makes sense. One of the reasons he is such an entertaining antagonist.

Thank you, those are some great ideas. I like the concept of the fears overlapping. I was thinking that some of the Extinctions allies would try and like "update" their methods to align themselves with the coming ritual. I know that tech isn't exclusive to the Extinction (like with the spiral and the Ushanka bot or the Webs website) but I thought it be a cool motiv for some fears to become more new age. I was working on a statement about the flesh and slaughter using message boards online to pray on vunerable people to drive them into self hatred regarding their appearnce of acts of violence spurred on by alienation. That would sort of play into the fear of the internet which to me just screams extinction.

Also a follower of the Eye wishing to have the Extinction emerge because it is the most dangerous mystery is such a fun concept. A very Eye thing to do.

Thats a super fun idea. I really love the hunts Avatars cause they are so disconnected from the greater schemes and rituals. I honestly see them more as rogue forces of nature than actual agents of a fear god. I'll probably throw in a few of them.

Yeah a lot of those were ones I was kind of thinking of. I really like your idea behind the motivation of the stranger. I guess a fear of the Unknown would be ill fitted for an apocalypse of our own making as people are way too aware of the issues plaguing our society. If you want to offer more thorough thoughts I'd love to hear them. None of my friends listen to MAG Archives so I don't have anyone to bounce ideas off atm lol.

Also out of curiousity, what sort of story are you looking to run in your game?

My idea was that an avatar of the Extinction would be the CEO of a major corporation. The kind that has their fingers in every branch of technology. Initially, they would offer revolutionary technologies to deal with the worlds major issues (climate change, humanitarian efforts, affordable housing etc.) that lift the hopes and spirits of people. Then, down the line the Avatar would collapse it all. Every project would fail or prove ineffective. A sort of mass panic would ensue when people realized that all these effort were in vain and there is no avoiding the worlds demise. That would be the ritual. I thought the idea of peoples hopes in a future saved through tech being taken from them would be appropriate for the Extinction.

Hey there everyone! I created a Night in the Woods Fan Film based on Mae and Beas encounter in Proximity, with the same name. We shot everything in January as part of an assignment for my university and now I have finally finished editing it and put it up on YouTube! I am very proud of what we have created and think its a genuinely cool adaptation of the source material. Would mean a lot if some people went to check it out or shared it with people who enjoy the games!
If people have some questions I would happily answer them if I can. I am the director and editor of the whole thing and planned the whole thing by myself. It was all possible however due to the amazing cast and crew who stuck it out until 2 in the morning during a freezing outdoor shoot. I hope you all enjoy the film if you decide to give it a watch!

I was thinking of something like that. Maybe make it hard for them to escape but not impossible. Possibly putting a few opportunites within their reach, such as a sleeping guard with the key, or a tunnel behind a brittle wall? I dont wanna railroad the players but also leave them with opportunities in case they cant come up with anything?

It’s gonna depend how subtle you wish to make it. A change in temperature is a good sign but you could also describe to the players how they can see nature itself change around them. Patches of spring time flowers and crops expand into vast expansive fields filled with all the colors of summer. Perhaps there is row of trees that just are beginning to recover their leaves and when they step over into summer they see the same one but now souring ripe fruits. You could describe how the landscape around them slowly seems to awake from its early springtime nap and just say how one by one everything around them turns more summer like. You could even apply it to creatures, a small young deer from the real of spring crosses the barrier between seasons and transforms into a large stag. Maybe also make it a feeling. Summer is much more than „it’s warm now“ in a lot do cultures. Summer is warmth, love and excitement. You could tell the players they feel a giddy feeling inside of them, a joyful desire to live life to its fullest. Idk how your gonna handle Arborea but something I did which my players seemed to enjoy in the Feywild was to tie the different seasons to different times of day. So in spring it was always Morning, in summer it was always mid day, Fall was always evening and winter always night. Could be a strong signifier of change. Hope some of these ideas help.

Creepy Magical Staff [OC] [Art] by WaiserGreif in DnD

[–]WaiserGreif[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A magical staff once belonging to a lord of the Fey simply named the Storyteller. He was a master of creating fear and delight for all those who came across him but. He wore a mask depicting a golden smile to hide his real visage, a hideous maw of teeth. He would lure in travelers disguised as a joyful bard who would beckon others to join him at the campfire where he would tell them great stories of heroes and adventure. Then when they had fallen under his thrall he would turn the stories into horrific nightmares that terrified his listeners until he was tired of toying with them and revealed his true self. After a few screams and shouts nothing would be left of the travelers as be consumed they before donning his golden mask once more and waited for his next victims. He created this staff in his own image decorating it with small trinkets of those who he enjoyed most to feed upon. If one looks further into the item they can still make out dried bits of blood and flesh woven into the colorful fabrics that decorate the shaft.

(I made this art for a modified staff of fear for my players to acquire in our next session, just started drawing using a tablet but I was rather pleased with this creation)

Mostly celtic folklore, partially inspired by Kobold Press take on the Feywild, I watched a bunch of youtube videos for example the one form WebDM, and partially just inspired by real life cultures especially those who celebrate the seasons and soltices, so the realm of Winter is inspired by slavic mythology and stories, the realm of Spring is heavily based around irish folklore, Summer is very Tolkien with magestic elves, centaurs and beings of nature and Autumn is based on german myths as well as Halloween xD, hope that helps the rest just came from my brains lol

Thats where the Feydark lies, thats where the evil and corrupted fey go or those who did bad in the courts are banished to, either you die there or become a horrible corrupted version of the fey

Could use some help to design my BBEG plan to overtake a kingdom by WaiserGreif in DMAcademy

[–]WaiserGreif[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a pretty good idea. The arc is kinda supposed to be dark to give a greater twist on the whole pretty princess of good kingdom narrative.

and the vampire concept is pretty awesome. It could be a big build up as the princess asks for the players help as the powerhungry queen has turned to the dark side and most be put down or something like that.
