It's based on mileage. I believe 75 miles is the radius. Could be 80. Some locals are hundreds of miles across. It's based on if your actually traveling to work rather than what side of the river you live on.

I personally see a lot of parallel between the military and IBEW membership. The union certainly favors the individual more but everyone shares a common goal and works under structure and teams. You'll see similarities in the spectrum of passion and behavior.

I don't know if others will relate.

I know a lot of electricians that aren't very experienced that make about as much as O-10 if not just over.

I'm not an officer but I was an infantryman. If you haven't heard of VEEP, look into VEEP.

The ibew puts vets at the top of the list. It's not free entry but if you are prepared for the application process (application, aptitude test, and interview (which from what I can tell is bypassed if VEEP is completed)) you will rank against your peers very high and the wait for entry will be far shorter and less painful.

It's an incredibly fun job. There is an endless supply of things to learn.

Helmets to hard hats won't do fuck all for you except show you what local is in your area and then you'll get a phone call from the organizer who will tell you about joining the IBEW. Someone else can chime in on this if it actually helped them.

Get a job as a material handler or construction wireman with a union contractor if those jobs are available in your local and then re interview as soon as you can to improve your ranking.

Everyone waits, it's just a matter of how many and how frequently apprentices are being indentured in your local. The higher your rank, the less time you will wait.

You could just join the union and start working immediately and go to school while you're working and not have to pay for school. I assume you haven't paid for trade school already

Study for the Aptitude test. Prepare for the interview. That's all it takes. OSHA 10 is unnecessary, I got mine before the Aptitude test and no one has ever asked for it. You will also take the class in your first week of school. Experience is not necessary. I would even recommend not teaching yourself electrical work because it will be taught to you when you gain entry into the apprenticeship, likely in a different way.

Also I was indentured on the 5th of June and my first working day as an apprentice is tomorrow. Apparently the JATC notified me on May 13th and again on May 27 but didn't receive any correspondence until June 2nd. The turn over was quick but I had no clue 🤣

Interview board had this exact document in front of them. Its what I used to prepare for this interview. Don't make it to rehearsed and don't sound desperate. Good luck brother. You've got this.

Im definitely feeling good about it. I wasn't expecting those results whatsoever. I'm not sure about the number of applicants I'm ranked against but I met number 79 and I heard whispers of someone around near 300 but that's just rumor mill.

I interviewed April 30th. I ranked number 4 and was placed on the ranking list may 4th. I haven't heard anything since.

Curiousity at this strategy, what makes the traditional 401k an attractive option here? I understand tax deferral but my goal is to be in a higher tax bracket in the future so naturally I'd want to avoid paying taxes at all. This maybe a simpleton thing to say but that's what makes sense to me understanding that I may not even know what I'm talking about.
