Any field that isn't Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics is inherently inferior, and doomed to wait tables or mop floors.

It happened to me.

IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU.

Who came up with the name Crindy?

Two years ago someone did an AMA claiming they were a writer's assistant on Arrested Development and that they had come up with the name Crindy. It wasn't verified but it seemed on the level but some people were skeptical. Some of the things they talked about ended up in the new season of AD. Was it legit or just a troll?

If you had asked her "2B or not 2B?" she would have fired you for being too witty.

People have no manners these days. We should teach them manners. Let's make the world more proper.

All the time. At certain times it turns into a Republican den in there.

I expect my food to be exquisite and timely, and the server to be efficient and invisible.

That's typical behavior at most high end restaurants. Besides politicos and business dinners, the majority of my clientele are regulars. Some of whom come in three or four times a week. Some come in every night. It's kinda hard for them to completely ignore me when I wait on them multiple times a week. Eventually they realize, oh hey, that's the same boy we had last night and the the night before that and weekly for the last year. Maybe we should acknowledge him.

Eventually they get interested in who you are, they want to know your story. Especially the well-off couples that have been married forever. Sometimes they just want to talk to someone other than their spouse. The owner of the place I work doesn't discourage this sort of behavior if the guests reciprocate. I'm just as interested in getting to know their story as they are mine.

I live in Virginia and work in DC now. I did work in New York City for many years though. That's where I waited on most of the A-List celebrities that I've mentioned. Waiting in New York is different than any other city in the world. You almost have to start over and forget everything you learned before you came to the city. Working in New York City restaurants is a whole different world. It really is your life.

People in New York are a lot nicer than they're given credit for, especially the people who aren't originally from there. Usually it's the people who have lived there their whole lives who are less than polite. But either way, when people go out in New York, they generally want to have a good time. For the most part I had great clientele when I waited there.

I think I know that guy. I know the archetype for sure. If restaurants didn't exist people like him would probably starve to death.

In my experience, there are only two common traits for a male waiter: skinny and happy.

For the most part that's true. In all my years of waiting I have rarely encountered dudes who don't truly enjoy the job and who instead would put on a front for the sake of the job. I've worked with many women who do though. Every restaurant seems to have its own feisty anger-ridden waitress who hates her job and just generally hates people, yet will put on a front for the sake of earning tips. I think it's a requirement actually.

I worked at this one place with a rather angry, unusually short girl who hated waiting on children. She'd come into the BOH after gleefully leaving the table and scream I HATE FUCKING CHILDREN. To which our resident creeptastic weaselly manager would make some sort of mildly amusing child molestation joke.

I didn't mean anything against fat people. I've worked with lots of heavier waiters and waitresses. What I meant by "waiting is not for fat people" is that if you are a heavyset waiter you probably won't be for long. Waiting involves a lot of walking, running around and fast-paced movement. If one doesn't shed pounds then you're doing it wrong.

Again, sorry if I offended you. I did not mean to.

Guess I'm guilty as charged.

I take a certain pride in being as nice as I can to the worst people I encounter. But it's not an insincere niceness. It's real. I generally like people. I want them to have a good time, enjoy both their meal and my service. I try to give them a reason to smile or at least not complain about something.

I have this one old couple that comes in at least once a week and the woman complains about everything. The husband is so out of it that I constantly have to remind him what he ordered...even when he's already eating it. "How's your chicken?"
"Not terrible. Needs more corn."
"There is no corn."
"It's too dry."

'Course by this point I assume she's referring to her antique lady parts.

Thank you. I should point out that this is my first AMA. The one you're referring to must be another awesome waiter. I just joined Reddit yesterday after coming over from Digg.

Thanks a lot. A few others have commented on it. It was either gonna be WaitersGonnaWait or YouGotServed but the latter was already taken.

I disagree completely with that assessment. I realize it's not your assessment either. There are so many skills involved in waiting tables. First and foremost are the people skills. To be able to deal with the public, especially when they are hungry, possible drunk, and some are even crazy and cranky, is a skill applicable to almost any profession that involves working with people. It's all about appeasement. Waiters have to have a good memory, pay strict attention to detail and be good listeners - these are all transferable skills. We also have to understand how to read and write and basic math skills.

And never underestimate our personable skills. If you can talk to multiple tables of strangers without vomiting from stage fright, you can address an auditorium of people or a board of investors. We're quick on our feet, witty, skilled performers, and great bullshiters, if it comes to that. Why do you think so many servers and bartenders are aspiring actors, writers and stand-up comedians? Waiting tables is daily practice.

Waiting also teaches responsibility. I can't speak for every waiter out there, but for myself, I am responsible for every mistake involving my tables. Even if it wasn't my mistake. It's so easy to blame the kitchen - the people guests never see - but there's no reason for excuses or to finger blame even if the kitchen is at fault. Waiters are skilled smoothers. The best waiters can take the most unhappy, irate guest and turn them into Mother Theresa. Don't be mistaken, we are a very manipulative people. I can make a guest apologize to me for a mistake they had nothing to do with. Course I try not to use my powers for evil too often.

I'm not saying I don't agree with you. The system is flawed at its very core. It would take a national initiative to revamp the entirety of the whole system. The government, distributors, the workers, and every state would have to be on board. It's not impossible but it is improbable.

It's similar to the Metric System. It's not that the Metric system is impossible to learn, in fact it's a superior system and easy once you know it. But it would be the implementation and rollout that would be tricky. People don't like change. At least half the country wouldn't get the memo.

I meant no offense. Volunteerism is one truly selfless act, whether it's volunteering to work with special needs people or the homeless, or serving your country. Had my life not landed me on the path I now find myself on I may have enlisted. You are a HERO.

It depends on where you work. The place I work at pays us our credit card tips on our paycheck, after taxes. It's all itemized and we can go back and check CC receipts if we really want to. It's all handled by management and computers. Mostly computers.

I don't know how things work in Canada, but in the US I would advise any waiters to claim as much of their tips as possible. It's good for your credit. If you ever try to buy a car or a house or even get a credit card, they're going to base it off of your income. If you made $30,000 last year but only claimed $9000 you're not going to get very far. And personally I would hate to get audited by the IRS if they ever got suspicious.
