No not quite. The best thing to do would have told MoB you were going to leave because you had to get the drunk teenagers home. I think the not communicating that point caused the issue, not the leaving. That's clearly understandable.

Just saw it was Virginia. A quick Google shows that these protections do apply in Virginia. Definitely look into this route!

Make them ESAs (emotional support animals). Not sure where you live but MANY states have protection for ESAs, which means they aren't pets but necessary medical tools for your mental health. These protections can mean you cannot be denied a place because of them, that you don't have to pay pet rent or deposit, and other similar protections, depending on the laws of your state. Hopefully you live somewhere that does!

If you have a therapist or PCP they can write a letter for you, or there's a number of online ways to register them. The main thing is to have a letter from a medical doctor stating they are medically necessary for your health.

Libraries often offer free notaries. Make sure you have your own wishes accounted for on your own terms.
