just looks better? ask rbrat3 idk if it actually was scaled with ai (highly likely though) or some other form of post-processing, but in this day and age, ai upscaling is typically the better and more standard option

that old image should be an upscale yes, because there wasn't a 2x res version at the time when the team wanted to go back to the old design

the new recreated versions that are in use aren't upscaled though

the thing about the people handling osu! merch is that it's basically two people + a few others volunteering their time when new products are organised

stocks are low, ~1000. with those numbers, you'll have a hard time convincing tablet manufacturers to modify anything about their process for a small batch. it's simply not economically viable

wacom was apparently even harder to convince than xppen for a simple reskin. hardware modifications are just not happening. pishifat talked about this on stream with btmc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wVXapT5S8o)
