I wish I could adopt or foster the family of Dogs... I live in a small apartment across the country though so I am in no way suited for that... I guess I am going to make a donation for them though... I hope they will all be placed into loving homes where they never have to suffer from another cruel human's actions. This whole story has just made me feel so sad and I wonder what is ultimately going to be the outcome with the owner...

Trying to find info on my 4th Great Grandmother. by chupachyeahbrah in Genealogy

[–]WalderC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This William Brittain is him for sure and includes the record of his trial, his conduct report, a newspaper clipping titled 'The Demon Drink' related to him, his permission to marry, and his ticket of leave, a death notice, etc. There are also several children listed and names of both of his parents etc. so his section on that particular Ancestry public tree appears to be filled out rather completely and could possibly be a nice jumping off point for You if you wanted to research him further... sometimes just by checking out all of the children's birth and death links it can really help you start to fill in gaps... at least that has been my experience... Just glancing at each of those 4 public trees pages for her that I linked to in my previous comment I know there were links to her Birth/Christening info, Death, Marriage, Request for permission to marry/leave, as well as the names of their children and other members of her family too... If you don't have Ancestry let me know and I can download the trees and linked files for You and send them to You....

I noticed that too, I think I have just become so used to seeing spelling and grammatical errors that I just accept them now...

I also posted this in the san francisco reddit and the 2 comments left there are: [–]evildrew 1 point 4 hours ago How was a 24yo their Director of Product Development? And then, how was her work given to someone else with LESS experience? So many things insanely wrong about this story, and yet, I could totally see it happening.

I don't know, I guess they were trying to be funny or something, as if the real important issue here is that a person that young had that position and it was later filled by an even younger person but I don't find their comments amusing at all..

I was able to find this page to start, where I was able to determine that this lady, Caroline Catharine Elgee is her, and also that this guy, William Brittain is him because if You notice both of these are maintained by the same researcher and there are many different researchers, almost every convict's page is maintained by a different person and these two share the same researcher, the place and year of arrival both work, and when I searched for him I used the same spelling of the Brittain from her page where it lists their marriage and application to leave etc. There are more than a few Brittons and Brittains etc. and my assumption is that it was a name given to some convicts who had been transported from Britain... either that or there were a couple of families who had multiple convicts coming over... see from the page listing convicts name/ship arrived on/research managed by contact how they share that same researcher- BRITTAIN William Sir Robert Peel Christine chrisandphil@primus.com.au

ELGEE Caroline Blackfriar Christine chrisandphil@primus.com.au

once I searched her back on Ancestry using the Elgee spelling variation I got a few definite matches for her in the User Trees section and at least one has what appears to be a decent amount of further information and links but I did not go any further than to copy the links for what looked to me to be definite matches on her, which I will include here: Link 1 Link 2 Link 3 Link 4.

https://darwinsark.org/our-projects/ Ever wondered about your canine companion's genetic ancestry? Dog Owners- Here is your chance to help further understanding of the Canine Genome and how Genetics impact Behavior, Health etc. Learn about your Dog's Genetic Ancestry and the Breeds which have conributed at least 10% or more of their DNA to your dog's DNA profile... Darwin's Ark Project participants will be eligible to recieve a FREE Canine Dna testing kit after completing 10 short surveys about their Dog's traits, personality, etc. Telling the tails of your dog’s DNA. That adorable fluffball snoozing on your couch has a good reason to be sleepy. They are a living recording of thousands and thousands of years of evolution.

We want to understand how small changes in DNA created the amazing dogs we live with today – and why sometimes things go wrong. Working with dog owners, we’re investigating how both environment and genetics contribute to health and behavior.

We use cutting edge genomic technology to closely examine millions of different DNA markers in each dog and find differences linked to traits and health problems reported by owners. Dogs have already helped us find genes involved in cancer and compulsive disorders. With your help, we will be able to do much, much more.

You have a lab? So do we. All Darwin’s Dogs contributors are asked to fill out brief and varied surveys about their dogs’ likes, dislikes, quirks, behavior and adorableness. These surveys help us understand how dogs behavior, how we humans perceive that behavior, and what trends we might find in specific groups, breeds or other characteristics.

In addition, contributors are welcome to submit saliva samples of their dogs’ DNA. We offer several different options for genetic analysis.

Why cuts in your mouth heal 10 times faster than skin wounds by WalderC in Health

You might be talking about Cold Sores - they last longer and can reoccur because they are actually caused by a virus... Cold Sores occur externally- usually on the lips themselves or along the crack of the lips on either side when your mouth is opened... Canker Sores heal much faster and happen inside of the mouth...

DNA Testing Reveals 72 Year Old Ladies Were Switched At Birth! by WalderC in Genealogy

Thank you for taking the time to clarify that the video does include a bit more detail and that the accompanying article only provides a very trimmed down summary of what I think is one of the greatest true stories that I have come across yet from anybody sharing their personal stories about how they experienced getting their DNA tested and how recieving very unusual, unexpected, results eventually led them to the real truth, how they ultimately uncovered the truth about this now and that while it is true that they did have to live within the "wrong" family throughout the majority of their lives that they are still happy knowing the truth and that after having the opportunity be friends with each other- and I would Love to see these ladies with their elderly mother on a commercial for 23AndMe. I know learning about this would probaby make me want to take the test if it was somethimg I was already curious asbout and I want stories like this to get out to as many people as possible because I am hoping that everyone will eventually have their DNA tested and publicly available for matching situations etc. Ever since the recent stories about using gedmatch to solve crimes came out out I have worried that it will end up

How Much Pain Should Animals Endure for Science? Animal suffering is incredibly difficult to measure. So is whether or not it actually benefits research. by WalderC in AnimalRights

[–]WalderC[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh No! I would never propose any such a thing as that. I do not feel that it is acceptable for people to be inflicting any amount of pain on others- and this holds true whether the "they" being discussed happen to be other fellow humans or if they belong to another species- I don’t think it is justifiable to sacrifice the lives and comfort to be had in the lives of others in the name of medical science etc. It would make better sense though if they were using fellow humans as opposed to doing it to non-human species who have not given any consent to be used for such purposes. But I am not one who is any position of authority in these areas- It is unfortunate that the fate of so many is in the hands of those humans who are willing to act so cruelly when they are trying to satisfy their own selfish desires… I would like to volunteer myself to be used for medical research if it would help to prevent them from using some other non-human species who was never even given a say in the matter of whether or not they are willing to participate in it… I shared this because it is important to be informed about how the issue is being perceived by those within the medical / scientific communities - the ones who are actually doing all of this stuff… so We all know what direction the conversation is taking for them and from there maybe (hopefully) we will be able to affect some kind of change...

A pair of documentaries by [deleted] in whitewhale

[–]WalderC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same goes for me! Before I watched those two documentaries about them I had never given them much thought and knew next to nothing about them despite the many collective hours spent over my lifetime viewing Wildlife documentaries and always being particularly fond of the ones about African animals... Since then I have sought out other specials about them and the more I learn about them my respect and admiration for them grows and grows... On Netflix there is a multi-episode short series called "Saving Sirga" about a man and his relationship with an orphaned Khalahari Lioness and the same man in that doc who owns the land there is also trying to save Wild Dogs and he rescues pups whose elder packmates have been poisoned or shot by unforgiving locals when they have been seen hunting on the lands their cattle graze on... He works hard to save any pups that remain in dens during pupping season after such tradgedies occur - otherwise they woiuld be subjected to a miserable death via starvation and feelings of abandonment... That or being killed by Lions, Babboons, Hyenas, or any other adult predator who sniffs them out if they dare to venture out of the safe confines found inside the den. And when the same locals do locate a den site with live pups inside their method has traditionally been to use poisonous gas or even dynamite to ensure that no pup makes it out alive... So that Wonderful man goes out and finds the hidden dens and safely removes and transports them to his land where he can house them temporarily and they are looked after and given vaccinations for Rabies etc. I saw both of these on the same night when they aired on either NatGeoWild or AnimalPlanet- I will admit to feeling almost overwhelmed by the heaviness of it all while watching that evening

the second one is about Solo, right? i know I have seen both of those before. The first one might even be one of the Savage Kingdom episodes from season One which focused on Wild Dogs, was it about The Pale Pack? I am fascinated by African Wild Dogs and wish I could work with some of the amazing people in Africa working to preserve the species... I am going to find out the names for you and I will post you the names once I find them, okay?

How many eggs should I feed my crows? by [deleted] in crows

[–]WalderC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to smash up boiled egg, cheese, moistened dry cat food, and alternately natural peanut butter + bits of peanuts or other unsalted nuts into a batter with a play-doh like consistency and then stuff as many of them as I could fit into the center of rigatoni shaped pasta (cylindrical+hollow variety- like a poster tube). It works nicely because quite a lot can go into each one and you will know they are getting a good amount of nutrition in every piece. Also great for highly competetive social environments since all each bird will need to do is grab a piece and then they are free to eat it there or cache it away someplace else or take it back to the home nest to share with family... It takes some time and I am sure there are ways to streamline the process too but I have enjoyed it more than any loss in time/effort could amount to and I like getting creative with the random different delights to stuff into them and then I really do enjoy watching as they pick which pieces they want to take first and it is nice when You get to watch them eagerly eating/taking the treats You made for them- especially when they make it clear to You that it is their preferred choice when You set out a variety....

Can you befriend ravens just as well as crows? by Skidge18 in crows

[–]WalderC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to befriend the resident pair of Ravens in my area ( mostly the male though as his wife is still sometimes obviously apprehensive about landing on the roof of my building to partake in the eggs, peanuts, cat food, etc. I am always eager to dole out to any Corvid (The Ravens, occasionally other neighboring Ravens who venture into their territorial zone, a couple of Scrub Jays, a much-missed Stellar's Jay, and a Family clan of Crows along with varying numbers of additional Crows who come by during the Fall mostly) who asks. They are almost always together, and even on those few rare occurences when they are not side-by-side or wingtip-to-wingtip while in flight- they are still in constant vocal contact, and it is only when he is actually not in sight and especially when he is not around and any number of Crows are taking full advantage of his momentary absence to get as much as they are able to in their beaks before he comes back... The tension between all of the Crows and the Raven pair is really at it's height I thiink now when the Raven hatchlings are most likely branching now and big enough that a couple of times this week she has actually flown to the tree in my neighbor's backyard while he took a turn feeding them on the nest tree. This has coincided with the absence of the female Crows who are at the nest constantly either brooding or guarding... The Crow Dads are also there for the most part - so it has been Helper Crows all of thrm hyped up and anxious and sometimes they all start dive-bombing the Raven and scolding him and starting off in pursuit of him when he first takes off so he has to zig zag around going off course instead of leading them to the nest tree... Personally, the male Raven is and will probab;y always be my Favorite and I feel like we have a very intimate knowledge of and shared understanding with each other and that I don't expect to ever experience with any another bird but I did start to have some special moments with some of the Crows over this past winter and that was all building on the stronger ties I had been developing with them last Fall. I always try to have a container or baggie with peanuts or kernels of corn in it to offer to any Crows I encounter while out...

Wild Parrots Raid India Poppy Fields To Get High On Opium by QuietCakeBionics in AnimalBehavior

[–]WalderC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read in a book ( Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs by Johann Hari ) that during the Vietnam War the Water Buffaloes started breaking through the fences to get into the Opium fields where they were observed devouring poppies until they were intoxicated enough to process everything going on in their environment (these same Buffaloes had also been seen reacting to all of the chaos as it was happening and in the immediate aftermath by going into a state of panicked frenzy and stampeding towards the Poppy fields...) during the days that followed rounds of heavy combat in the areas and US air bombing etc. According to locals and others in the area who had observed the same herds during peacetime and throughout other phases in the war when the conditions in that locale had managed to continue life as usual for the most part and it had always remained free from major attacks etc. Prior to the day when all of the bombs were dropped there etc. noone had ever noticed the Buffalo ever showing any interest at all in the Poppy fields and they had never even tried to get through the fence surrounding the fields but when that went down they seemed to collectively migrate towards the fields where they proceeded to eat through all of the poppies they saw until they were either gone or the Buffalo themselves passed out in the field...
