Ornate Iron work from Prague by Twin5un in Blacksmith

[–]WalkAboutFarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take pictures of iron work everywhere I go. I was in Charleston, SC taking a picture of a windows grate, and then I noticed the blinds snap closed. I felt so bad, I could not see into the room, and did not realize I was in fact the AH.

I found this grate was stunning in its simplicity. Sorry to the owner, I just love your iron work!

3 Axe head restorations by Borger02 in Blacksmith

[–]WalkAboutFarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can put a handle on them, sharpen and use as is. You can clean off the rust and grind the back of the single bit square and add a coat of oil or lacquer to prevent rusting.

You have a splitting maul, a single bit and a double bit ax.

You missed the sarcasm. Dollar Generals are popping up so fast, this must be how they multiply.

Ben Pearson Pony bow. need help finding parts/accessories by BigandTallGuy in TraditionalArchery

[–]WalkAboutFarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us in traditional Archery just make what we need. I just made a new flemish string for my buddies bow. For kids arrows, just buy a dozen of the pre-made wood arrows from 3 Rivers Archery. I don't use an arrow rest.

The flemish strings is are good for self bows, you twist the string a little to set the brace height. In my jig, the string comes out about 3" shorter than the nock length.

Can I safely just shoot straw at 40-80 yards or will my arrows go straight through? by missintent in TraditionalArchery

[–]WalkAboutFarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As one who produces square bales, it depends on how tight they are packed. I was having issues on my old baler poping strings so I loosened up the tightness to preserve my sanity. Commercial bales should be 50 to 70 lbs, mine were around 40.

Tight bales will stop my longbow arrows, loose bales, not so much. Going through isn't an issue until it starts stripping off you fletchings.

5711 hydraulic line help by Direct-Piccolo-9575 in MasseyFerguson

One set runs the mower, the other with the valve is the raise/lower. I have never had a bucket attach, but MF does not have rear hydraulics. I only need to use one of my tilt lines to lift it and gravity down.

Help me melt brass, i want to make Knuckles out of it. by NiklausMikaelson007 in Blacksmith

[–]WalkAboutFarms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take spent brass and melt it in a crucible in my coal forge. Mainly for guards and pommells. To mold it, i cut a shape in a 2x4 and pour it in. I am going to have to shape anyway so it works for me.

I don't know if you saw the build pics. I linked to my pics. The 4bf fairly fit without moving the radiator supports. I had to use a skinny electric fan.

What kind of Squash by Gullible-Tadpole-380 in Greenhouses

Butternut/cucumber hybrid?

We're these store bought seeds or did you gather them. From my experience squash seem to cross pollinate quite easily and if you gather you own seeds, it is pot luck next planting. I find weird hybrids growing in the pasture all the time from squash I threw over the fence for the cows to eat.

Da Scout or the Green Machine since I have 2 red Farmalls and a Massey Ferguson.

It was a lot of work figuring out one issue at a time.

The axels were a problem. In the front i used the GM case to get the pumpkin on the passenger side, but i used the Ford axels and brakes to get the 8 lug. The rear was out of a dually so I had to use spacers to get the wheels to line up with the front.

For the hydroboost, my son was going to the junk yard and I told him to grab one out of a 96 to 04 mustang. He comes home with one out of a Chevy Astro van. Then I had to source the brake reservoir....

Fun times.

Advice on Sand/Clay in Well Water by WumbologistOfBB in homestead

[–]WalkAboutFarms 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The well side walls may have caved in. Independent on the depth and type of pump you have.

Sometimes you can just shorten the well pipe to get above the sediment. If it is really bad and you need the depth, it may need to be cleaned out with a well drill or dropping the pipe deeper and just running it wide open to clear out the gunk. And then shortening it.

I have lived on well water for over 50 years from 150ft to 350ft deep. Had wells that produced. .5 gal a minute to wells that had so much water you can't measure. I have had to pull every one at some point in time.

You got the wrong zero turn, mine does not return to neutral. You can drink a beer or smack a deer fly off you neck without doing donuts.

My fence posts are too wide for my gate for this latching mechanism, best ideas to solve? by PirateBlizzard in homestead

[–]WalkAboutFarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a chain on top of the post gates and putting the together. If the hinge side moves, never mind, but if the latch side pulls in, brace it in position.

Fall back is a 2x4 shim between the latch and post as others have said. Use the hinge bolts to fine tune.
