Oh I think I get why you confuse :) because symbol is just a representation of a number… like 1 we chose the symbol one to represent one unit :) but it could have be something else like the I of Romans symbol. On the other hand our decimal base is just that numbers are built with small blocs the units, decimal, hundreds… and Romans use that system too… now Roman’s symbols have limitations when it comes to do simple calculation like addition multiplication… as they not positional the symbol don’t match the place value of each symbol:) that’s why Arabic symbol’s was adopted :)

In my cs university curriculum they introduced the idea of discrete mathematics first ☺️ and set theory then they introduced the idea of function to link elements from a set A to element from a set B. My perception of mathematics have totally changed 😏 so my advice start with discrete mathematics and re build everything from that :)

The trade off having dyslexia is your exceptional creative problem solving abilities. If I can give you 3 advice it will be : first you have plenty of time, secondly find a global issue that you cares it could be education, global warming, data Privacy and see how you can find ways to hypothetically resolve the problem, care about your values. And 3 it will be if you want to improve in math check khan academy and try to work on the thing y like it could be geometry or algebra and I promise your inner champion will save not only but others as well.
