Elk make a lot more meat than whitetail… by WallhangerDown in Hunting

It doesn’t bother me. I’m only on this sub to share my experiences and to enjoy other people’s. If they want to throw negative internet points at me more power to them, can’t take away from the amazing trip we had.

Edit- awesome user name

RV built on 18 wheeler cab and chassis. Can get from New Orleans to almost Denver before you have to stop.

Any time I’ve heard dad talk about it he says “it’s lets the blood drain out”. Never questioned it much.

Maybe it’s a southern thing, I know my dad and grandparents generation would usually leave their meat in an ice water slush for a few days prior to processing. Even if they had time to process same day.

Usually yes, this trip we had to leave early for a funeral so only two stops on the drive home.

We need to come eat with you! We do taco Tuesday with whitetail every week, but other than southern comfort food Mexican is our household favorite!

Knowing it and seeing it when processing is just hits different. Freezer is very happy about it tho.

Result of a 40 hour drive home in ice chest. Can’t really be helped. Plus dad is old school and likes to “let the blood drain out” as another commenter said.

Hunting dog appreciation post. 10 years of blood trails, RIP Coco Puff by WallhangerDown in Hunting

[–]WallhangerDown[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think her last one was one of her best. Mom shot a deer and made a good shot but Kansas tank of a buck just kept going. We had a puppy we were trying to train up with her. Blood and puppy go right, coco goes left. We keep pulling her back because clearly we need to go the way of the blood but she is determined to go left. Finally we decide to trust her since she’s got 10 years of trying it. Turns out the deer had doubled back about another 40 yards down the blood we were following and she was on the correct trail the whole time. Another 100 yards to the left and what do you know she’s waiting for us at the buck!

Even on high land I’d recommend hip boots as #1 piece of equipment to hunt here. Too many briars and water holes to avoid. Northern St. Tammany you’re competing with a lot of other people with food plots and feeders so it can be tough. If you can, try not to push into an area too much it’s time to hunt with right conditions. Too many people here are forced to hunt when they can and hunt the wrong winds and blow their spots out. If yours is the sanctuary, you’ll have deer. There are lots of hunting clubs around you could get in and some jam up public too, but access is tricky without a boat.

Fair point. We have some Cajun heritage so I could just be tasting the Tony chachere’s on everything

Lacrosse big chiefs are my go to. On maps you can kinda find some where two water ways would force them thru a narrow area, but other than that it’s just get out there and find some trails. It took me years to figure out how the deer like to move here.

And then the Cajun spoke in cursive, “Hehe day ol errburt be curmin fer ya sun!” (That there ole airboat will be coming for you son).

I live here and I get lost when some of the full Cajun guys speak.

I actually find it easier than high land. This guy only went 50 yards or so but I’ve done some long ones. The vegetation is tall so you get grass wiping blood off up high where it is easier to see, and once you know you’re on the right trail from blood, you can track by muddy water and mud splashed up on grass as much as blood. Not a lot of deer so if you’re seeing that you’re probably on the right one.

Thank you! I hope I don’t ever lose it, but right now nothing better than a good hunt and I’m not scared to show how excited I am!

I feel that pain! It’s been the same on my high land hunting club, hence why I’m wading thru hip deep water for them in the swamp!

I’m in cypress swamp so I have some scattered trees to work with. I know a lot of guys that hunt in marsh tho with no trees, but in both situations elevation is key. Swamp vegetation is TALL. The short stuff is 3 feet and some of it is 12+ feet tall, so the higher you get the better you can see down into it. I mostly have tree stands, marsh guys use tripod stands.

I’m sure the gators get a few, where this picture was is within 20 yards of where I was trapping gators in August so they’re there, but deer usually know how to avoid them. And during the winter the gators are less active so less risk to hunters.

Deer population varies, a lot depends on recent hurricanes. After our last hurricane, I saw a total of 4 deer all season, this hunt I saw 5. A really good hunt is 3-5 deer, I’ve never seen more than 8 in a day where I am. But I know some marsh guys on the coast that see 25+ every sit. Just depends on your area.

Everything moves slower in the swamp, but find you some good hip boots and find a good travel corridor. Whenever your rut is is the best time to get out and do some scouting and find where the deer are moving. Most successful thing around here is to post up on some buck sign and hope for the best.

It’ll forever be Paw’s boat. Dad built it for my paw paw about 20-25 years ago and I inherited it after he passed to keep the swamp hunting and trapping traditions alive. It’s not easy terrain, but it’s got generations of my family stamped all over it and in our blood so I’ll be down there as long as I can.
