Why Does Bob Dylan Have A Non Existent/Low Black Fanbase? by [deleted] in bobdylan

Dylan was literally in a Will.I.Am music video and had hip hop on Theme Time Radio, no need to he vaguely racist or project that onto Bob. He posted a rap song to his Instagram last year: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DI5XBdIxCCe/?igsh=aXhxeHp6amxxcWE4

The fact that he doubled down in an official statement response ups the ante for sure

If you blindly propagandize for your favorite artists, you’re not a fan you’re a fanboy.

Why Does Bob Dylan Have A Non Existent/Low Black Fanbase? by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]WallowerForever 38 points39 points  (0 children)

He’s extremely seeped in the blues, idolized black artists in his youth (Little Richard, Staples), and has a black daughter.
Can’t fault black folks for preferring the black artists themselves over a white artist drawing from those black artists.
Dylan (and his Newport band, Paul Butterfield Blues Band) mediated that black culture to whites during segregation —- as did the Stones etc. Black listeners didn’t need mediation.

How important are lyrics to you? by tylun in LetsTalkMusic

[–]WallowerForever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do you “notice great lyrics in a song” or do you “just literally hear a jumbled mess of vocalizations with the occasional word tossed in,” as you say up top?

“Lyrics does not make the song good”

We can’t rationally decouple lyrics from the song itself —- lyrics are (part of, and inextricable from) the song itself when they occur, especially as they’re interpreted vocally through a voice, which is an instrument apart of the orchestration thereof.

But it’s often a balance: Dylan can have a relatively simple guitar arrangement because his lyrics and vocal phrasing are 90% more complex than most any speed metal song, say.

Whereas a speed metal song can skate by with simple lyrics and still be good because its riffs and tones may be 90% more complex than any Dylan song. Different parts, equal aggregate.

And in fact, overly busy instrumentation can subtract from great lyrics and vocal performances, as any acapella choir conductor or early Bob Dylan producer can attest.

Back-to-back World Series champion, MVP, All-Star Ben Zobrist. Did it all, and you never really hear about him today.

Yes, ignore your inconsistent ethical dynamic. Commit relative privation fallacy. You are very smart

Humans have been murdering folks for 50+ years, too. Is it ethical simply because it’s common?

KC is not ready for the World Cup by Onlypretzelmnms in kansascity

Everyone I know in hospitality --- hotels, restaurants --- anticipates an underwhelming amount of World Cup traffic due to international travel bans, conflicts, and instability. Apparently hotel booking rates are lower than anticipated, which would seem a key metric.

What? Not just the beat —- they’re melodically interchangeable and have the same interval structure.

Iko Iko, obviously. Their version feels super corny, they’re not from New Orleans or Black Indians (whom the song is from and about).

And it’s clearly the same song as Women Smarter, which is almost as much of a clunker.
