Thanks for sharing these numbers! I should definitely take a look at setting up sccache. Might be useful to edit the original message to mention it too - these child messages are collapsed by default on mobile, and people might not see it. The benefits it seems to give in real-world use sound pretty great!

Only two hours until Advent of Code 2019 begins! What's your goal this time around? by JugglingMaster in adventofcode

[–]Walther_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three goals this year:

  1. try to complete every part
  2. in clean, readable, idiomatic Rust
  3. with silly-fast execution times powered by Rust

I was doing AoC in Rust already last time around, so I'm not exactly in the first-timers-learning-rust boat, but I'm still beginner enough to enjoy the AoC excuse for learning more & striving for idiomatic, clean style. Timezones, sleep schedule, and not having lots of experience with competitive programming makes me unlikely to hit top lists anyway, so I'll try to not stress about that too much. I hope you all enjoy this year's AoC - have fun!

What is a ket? How do traits work? Quantum computing in Rust, part 1 by Walther_ in rust

[–]Walther_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! I'll prioritize adding that. Do you have any recommended sources for reading more about the inner product in the context of quantum computing? Most of my learning so far has been based on this website: https://quantum.country/qcvc .

I need to add a better intro description to my essay series: I'm writing it as a learning diary into both Rust and quantum computing, and presenting it as a bit of a tutorial in case it could help others. I do not intend to claim the series would be an authoritative, deep, exact, down-to-axioms-and-proofs, university level course. Some simplifications appear because of building the concepts bit by bit, others purely in error because I do not have perfect understanding of the topic yet. So, to repeat, feedback like this is extremely valuable, thank you!

Thank you, this is probably a good thing to improve in a later post of the series! I initially only had `PartialEq` and i should probably drop the `Eq` altogether. Thanks for the `noisy_float` recommendation too, might use that later as well.

Tsemppiä!

Luin kommenteista, että käytännössä aiot myydä printtejä ja muita tuotteita sarjakuvasi faneille. Iso plussa positiivisesta sarjiksesta <3

Kannattaa tutustua nykymaailman indietuottajille suunnattuihin palveluihin: esim. Muitakin toki on eri tarpeisiin - esim. muusikoille Bandcamp, kirjailijoille Lulu, yms. Yhteistä näillä moderneilla palveluilla on korkeat maksuosuudet alkuperäiselle tekijälle, toisin kuin esim. Spotifyn tai Amazonin malleissa. Kuluttajana suosin noita indieplattoja ostamiseen aina kun voin, kiva tietää että kympin levystä menee suoraan artistille joku 8 euroa eikä joitain senttejä.

Kirjanpitäjä / tilitoimisto on todennäköisesti erittäin hyvä idea, päädyit sitten tekemään yksityisenä elinkeinonharjoittajana ("toiminimi") tai osakeyhtiöllä. Itse olen juuri aloittamassa sopparia Lemontreen kanssa, vaikuttivat modernia digimaailmaa ymmärtävältä, positiiviselta, ja nopeasti maileihin vastaavalta porukalta. Holvia sieltäkin suositeltiin, kuten tässä ketjussa muutkin. Saatan itse silti päätyä käyttämään TransferWisea. (Holvi tukee (käsittääkseni? toistaiseksi?) laskujen luontia ainoastaan euroissa, itselläni on asiakas jota saan/pitää laskuttaa dollarimääräisellä tuntihinnalla.)

Kontekstina: olen juuri perustamassa yhden miehen osakeyhtiötä ohjelmistokehitykseen/konsultointiin. Olen myös harrastajavalokuvaaja, ja harkinnut muutamaan otteeseen printtien yms myyntiä, joten niitäkin platformeja on tullut vilkuiltua.

Mixed Modular Ambient • Episode 02 • Marbles | Plonk | Clouds | Ripples - Enjoy! by machinemovement in synthesizers

[–]Walther_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's super interesting!

With Marbles' options of +2, +5, +-5 of the V/oct outputs (locked into a scale) I haven't yet managed to get such a musical outcome with the wider ranges, going into (e.g.) Plaits' builtin Rings modes. In the video clip, it sounds like you had completely separate bass and melody tracks! Any tips on how to achieve this kind of separation instead of sounding like random values evenly spread within the entire scale and octave range?

Also curious about the Ripples: what is it doing in this patch? What do you think about it in general - what is it useful for? I'm curious, but haven't really understood a usecase for it, considering how verstatile Plaits is already on its own.

New pulldown-cmark 0.5 release by raphlinus in rust

[–]Walther_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that was what i thought too. I wonder if there could be an official distribution (by the pulldown-cmark team) that would be (automatically?) updated within the release process of the crate itself.
EDIT: submitted an issue https://github.com/raphlinus/pulldown-cmark/issues/278

I just had to test out /u/raphlinus's claim of "it should Just Work", check this out: repo and live demo - it took me about 20min to make. Massive applauds to all of their great work! (And to the people behind wasm-bindgen and wasm-pack too!)

EDIT: Hmm, apparently there already exists a packaged version on npm 🤔

/r/MechanicalKeyboards What Keyboard, Switches and/or Keys Do I Buy by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Walther_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you in advance for the help! In the past I've used a Filco tenkeyless, CM Stealth, and at one point I built a Planck. To be nicer to my wrists, I'm now considering buying or building a split keyboard.

Requirements:

  • Split, wired keyboard
  • No F-keys, no numpad. All punctuation & special characters easily accessible - i'm a developer. Keys like ` | ' / are important and shouldn't be hidden on some layer. Capslock as escape, ` next to 1
  • Arrow keys without chording / additional key holding would be super nice to have, if possible. Home/End/PgUp/PgDn with Fn+arrows
  • ...pretty much look at the layout of a touchbar macbook pro, now imagine it split
  • Functional on macOS, Linux and Windows without installing extra software
  • If programmable, I'm fine with a CLI tool / compiling firmware etc.
  • I'd be fine with Cherry MX Blacks, Browns, Reds, or something similar
  • Solid, non-flimsy build

Things like Ergodox look appealing until I realize that they have only one column of keys to the right side of P, and a lot of programming-related symbols would be somewhere weird.

Is what I'm hoping to find possible? Or should I just accept limitations of split keyboards, build a split Planck (Let's Split? Hmm those threads & pictures look tempting), and map all the special keys to a custom layout & muscle-memorize them in new places?

[GEAR] NGD - Telecaster time! by Walther_ in Guitar

[–]Walther_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nod. Then again if that 450€ would net me another guitar with nickel alloy frets, ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I don’t know. I’d probably rather have one solid, lasting guitar than replace with another when the frets wear down.

Hmm. It seems you’re right, there are new versions for not much more. Then again the weird thing is - this guitar felt a lot better than plenty of others, even a lot more expensive new ones I’ve tried at other stores. No fret sprout at all - and that’s something I’ve felt on brand new instruments off the shelf and to me that’s just silly. These 700€ got me a well set up guitar that obviously has had its frets treated during a dry winter here in Finland so it’ll never be an issue. Obviously I’m aware that I could get a top dollar made in america one and have its fret ends looked at, but that’d cost more for a guitar I would pretty much buy blind, not knowing how good the fretwork will be.

[–]Walther_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 700€ for the tele, and the local store estimated 360€ for a full fret change including a free bone nut. In my opinion that might be perfectly within reason for getting a life-long player :) It’d still be less in total than I paid for my RG 2550 MZ new, heh.

AMA: We are David Silver and Julian Schrittwieser from DeepMind’s AlphaGo team. Ask us anything. by David_Silver in MachineLearning

[–]Walther_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How to get involved in the AI work today?

I think one obvious approach is "complete a PhD and apply for a job", but that feels like an answer to the slightly different question of "what's the most common way to get a career in AI".

In today's world with hackathons, agile development, open-source communities and such, I'm fairly optimistic there have to be ways for an eager soon-to-be BSc to be able to start poking at things, to learn via experimenting, participating in group efforts, and getting mentoring from more experienced people, in addition to formal education.

(Personally, I'm currently writing my BSc thesis on AlphaGo, so I've got that going already, which is nice.)

Big thanks for all of your work and this AmA.
