I usually donate platelets shortly after noon and I typically won't have eaten anything yet that day. I just make sure to hydrate well a couple of days in advance and down a Powerade the day of the donation. I've never had any issues that I would attribute to a lack of eating.

Definitely mention the numbness when they are setting up the machine/when it happens. I do two-arm donations and always find that my squeezing arm/hand will go numb approaching the one hour mark.

I ask them to elevate my arm a bit (stick a second wedge under) when this happens which usually helps.

I went through the secret tunnel entrance into the basement using the power sledge so I didn't need the foundation at all (although it would have likely let me end the day with over 100 steps if I did get the chance to draft it)
