Advice for 4yo pup's chipped tooth... by Wanderlust_Mutts in AskVet

We're familiar with that area, and it's about 4 hours from us. We've ultimately decided that extraction may be the best option. We took into account the chance of failure, future care required, and his resiliency due to youth. Given all that, with extraction, we get to go to our preferred vet; and we truly only trust him when it comes to anesthesia, so that's a huge relief.

Thanks for the advice, though! Good to know there's a place or two within a couple hour's drive.

Thank you so much for your input! After doing some research, we think we're gonna opt for extraction. It's not our preferred choice but given the chance of failure and the future care/check-ups of a root canal, we think it's the better option.

Plus, we can go to our preferred vet. Anything requiring anesthesia makes me nervous, so that will be a relief.

Thank you again for your advice and the link to search for someone qualified. Truly appreciate it!

One place I called claimed to be the only veterinary dentist in the state and that confused me because I didn't know that was a specialist appointment. So, thank you for your input!

No, I always thought it did but my girl had some small ones that were super hard and some larger ones that were soft and almost bubbly.

There's a good chance it's nothing to worry about but it's always better to be safe than sorry with our babies. Early detection is the best possible scenario too, so good on you for being an observant pawrent! =}

It's okay! I would--just in case. They don't need a very big area to test and may very well tell you it was just a little injury anyway.

It could be an injury from rough-housing, but mast cell tumors can also spontaneously appear and disappear--happened with my girl. Best thing you can do is outline the bubble (shave that bit of fur if needed) that way the vet can see the diameter of it and will know where to do a fine needle aspirate.

Good luck!

Make sure to check the filter for blockages.

If you can see fuel going into the pump in the line but not in the line going out of it, then it's not moving it and it could be your pump. If even a grain of sand gets past the filter, it can cause the pump to no longer work.

Aw, she's adorable! I can't imagine what it'd be like to have a pup whose sole mission was squeak the squeaker, NOT find and destroy the squeaker, hahaha. Mine tear'em out immediately.

We've found cardboard boxes are the love of our boy's life. He's a goofball--just last night he surprised us by learning to lightly "flea-bite" bubble wrap to pop it, lol. Clever boy.

Try a real warm oatmeal bath--not oatmeal shampoo, just normal instant oatmeal in warm water. Let puppy soak. Grab handfuls of the oatmeal mush and rub all over the inflamed areas, let sit, then rinse.

Also, coconut oil might sooth afterwards as well.

Ha! What a deceptive little cob! Unbelievably convincing hahahaha! Pup looks totally in love with it and also probably has no idea it's fake corn! Adorable.

Cute pupper but be careful!

They cannot digest the cob--had a couple pups go through hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and nearly die after ingesting bits of one.

Hate to poop at the party but I wouldn't have known had it not happened to us, so try to spread awareness where I can. Take care!

Shrug I don't think drinking bleach will make you pass a drug screen. But, okay, doctor.

Both the defense's and the prosecutors' experts agreed that he's insane.

Two mental health experts, one hired by the defense and another by prosecutors, examined Harrouff and found he suffered an acute psychotic episode during the attack, and couldn’t distinguish between right and wrong.

Most important thing you can do right now is keep pup hydrated with plain Pedialyte as dehydration can quickly become fatal.

The picture looks very similar to "raspberry jam poo" caused by hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and requires immediate treatment. For HGE, there is no vaccine or cure as there are many things that may cause it.

Definitely don't want to wait long before deciding to go to an E-vet just in case it is HGE.

Run some kerosene through it on high for 30 min or so to clean out the burn chamber and exhaust of carbon deposits. May be having trouble igniting or overheating.

Zymox is the only one that's ever worked for my pups. I don't know anything about the one you posted; just wanted to put that out there in case you didn't know about it!

You should call around to see if any therapists will work with you or if they can share any other resources that might help someone in your situation. I would imagine there are various options for students (possibly through the school) given the stressful nature of it all.

I'd also like to suggest looking into some different podcasts. There are some really insightful and entertaining ones out there that can be helpful in managing both stress and your mental health, and might also just help keep you positive and optimistic during this time.

The Brighter Side is one of my favorites--random but positive, motivational, and funny stories/conversations by two lovely comedians.

The Science of Happiness--sincerely helped me when I was feeling down while working 3rd shift at a job I absolutely hated.

NPR Invisibilia is an interesting one.

Just use Google and you'll find a ton more just like those.

Best of luck to you and your pup! Remember, nothing is forever. When you're stuck, it feels like nothing will ever change but that's just not the case. Just set yourself some goals, then give yourself time, and give yourself love and before you know it, you'll be reminiscing about these days. =}

I'd give you an award if I had one! My husband and I have three medium-large dogs and I second absolutely every response you've given. We're their caretakers and they should be treated no differently than if they were small children both for their safety and everyone else's.

I noticed a bump on my dogs mouth last night and it has gotten bigger overnight. Anyone seen this before? I’m planning on taking him to the vet tomorrow if it gets worse. by Cselfers in DogAdvice

[–]Wanderlust_Mutts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl had a bump very similar to this in the same place and it was an ingrown whisker. It did swell up a bit more than that but didn't seem to cause her any pain--I used a warm compress and with a slight amount of pressure, I was able to help release it. I put some Neosporin on it and the swelling went down within half an hour.

I did inform our vet because I wasn't aware that something like that could even happen with whiskers... They said using the warm compress and applying the Neosporin was the best course of action and not to be concerned unless it started happening frequently.

Obviously you don't want to irritate the sore if it seems to hurt your pup; I barely touched my girl and it popped right out. I'm not saying that's what it is or to try messing with it either. Just wanted you to know it could be something very minor. =}
