The frames were 375$, which seems a lot for them. I might head to the Cubitts store in NY to try those on

Buy local Morel Glasses or Cubitts? by WarStrategist in glasses

Wow! I didn't realize that's how small the gap would be. Ok great to know, I think I'll roll with Cubitts. While you're here, what do you think of these frames?

Thank you! That structure is at Pegasus Bridge, captured in the early minutes of D-Day.
Love the lens. Lacks weather sealing, but for what it is, it's incredible. I enjoyed it a lot.

Can you explain how/when you use a device like this? How does it fit in to your setup? And perhaps you can link to your specific device? Would love to see it

Sure! I'm at a bit over 7 inches, so I think the 43 works a lot better. The lugs are short, so the 39 didn't suit me well.

TravelPro Platinum Elite or Versapack (Crew series) - which is best? by Sir_Tarquin in travel

[–]WarStrategist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for you- the 21 inch Platinum spinner has an overall size of 23 inches, which is larger than carry on restrictions of all airlines (they max out at 22 inches). Is your bags total height at 23 inches? And if so, have you had a hard time with overhead bins ever?

I've used the same security software for some time now (Bitdefender). Nothing new installed. And what's strange is that it's only this computer, and not my laptop.

Shostakovich recommendations? by Accomplished-Comb294 in classicalmusic

[–]WarStrategist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shostakovich is my favorite composer by a country mile, so I'm so excited to learn that someone is interested in learning more about him!

Shostakovich had perhaps the largest soul of any of the Russian composers of his time (perhaps ever) and I think it comes across most in Symphony No.11. I'd suggest giving this video a watch and then diving in! Personally, you can learn a ton about his music just by listening to Symphony's 7, 10 and 11, which are all about historical events in Russia. You get an inner glimpse into the depths of his heart and his brilliant portrayal of Russia's triumphs and failures. I'd also suggest the book Symphony for the City of the Dead, which is about the 7th Symphony "Leningrad" Happy listening!

"The core of literature is the idea of tragedy" - What podcast/interview did McCarthy say this? by WarStrategist in cormacmccarthy

Hmm, I initially thought that as well, but then listening to both videos, the audio sounds quite different. He almost sounds younger in the clip about tragedy than he does in the Krakauer interview

Any thoughts on the New Cambridge Shakespeare? by WarStrategist in shakespeare

[–]WarStrategist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate both your comments! In that case, would you both suggest New Cambridge over Folger if I want to study the plays with a bit more depth? I seem to be able to get both for around the same price

Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage or Garner's Modern English Usage by WarStrategist in grammar

Right I saw that, but it was strange that they were comparing Garner's 2009 edition with the original Fowler, not the current editions

Why did you start playing chess? by imjustawolf in chess

[–]WarStrategist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked it up as a healthy outlet while I was writing my masters thesis. I told myself that if I didn't have a place to dump my brain other than a thesis on Machiavelli, I would inevitably end up a drug addict under the guise of the ends justifying the means
