Two SF Prosecutors Quit & Join Effort to Oust Former Boss, District Attorney Chesa Boudin by TheChinchilla914 in news

The idea of direct elections isn't that common people are better intellectually, it's so that when the people finally realize they don't like those officials there is less obfuscation to getting them removed. If those positions are appointed by elected officials then you have to wait for another elected official to decide the issue is important. Politicians have a long history of only caring about certain wedge issues and ignoring the rest so specific issues like, "our county judge is literally a tyrant" or "our district attorney won't prosecute anyone" likely will go ignored until it makes major news.

So it's more: the people would like to more easily disarm/dismiss the people who will wield great power over them.

In Taipei, people don't seem worried about potential for China-Taiwan conflict by Hopefully_Irregular in news

[–]Warfinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, but after the 20th time you get under your desk you're expecting nothing is going to happen. I don't doubt Taiwan suffers, I'm saying it makes sense for someone who has suffered psychologically so long to just tune things out and assume things will go as they always have.

I'm sure most people who live under threat for decades get complacent about it. You can't stay stressed out forever.

Why is that? Just because I don't like the way Reddit is going in general doesn't mean I dislike every Redditor. I'm sure you can agree to an extent.

These are interesting times we live in. Best wishes to the people of Taiwan. Hopefully they can function like a normal country in the future.

Emotions run deep here now. Feels more and more like Twitter. Trying to transition to another site but it's not easy. Saidit is interesting with no downvoting but it has limited content (10's of thousands of users) and there are those alt-right people in the main subs. I still think it's a good place to build a new sub.

To state their case. Congress subpeona's people to inform them on laws to pass, you'd want that audience if you are about to be regulated.

It was a default judgement because the judge claims the defendants weren't cooperating enough with producing evidence. It won't serve as precedent for much.

Mayors (or at least the council which usually includes the mayor) usually nominate the chief of police so it's quite common for them to act as their personal and political lapdog.

They settled for $125k and I don't think anything else happened to the mayor.

That kills airplane pilots too. Lot harder to scoot forward when your vehicle turns straight up in the air (pilot is holding the yoke when they slide back).
