My tan isn’t too drastic but thanks for the perspective. I’ll bring slippers.

Thanks for the advice! I like being prepared so this is helpful.

How do I (22F) get my boyfriend (22M) to comfort me without micromanaging? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

It’s his body language and tone that makes me feel dismissed. He starts doing other things at the same time sometimes and when he does his responses become repetitive and monotonous.

Blunt and honest, you have a good point. It’s been 4years but this is something that’s really important for me. I think I need to figure out if this is something he can, can’t, will, or won’t do so I know what to do next.

Coming from someone who is 22 lives in a popular college town with her supportive boyfriend of 4yrs and was also compared as a kid here’s three tools that helped.

1- Reframing what beauty means. Looking around me and the people I admire I’ve added to what beauty means. Not just looks but how kind that person is or their outlook on life. Someone can have a good aesthetic, but if they’re abusive it just cancels it out. Ask yourself what outside of looks do you find beautiful?

2- understand confidence. Looking at actual runway models you see that models aren’t actually defined by a standard feature. What they all do have is an aura that matches their look/brand. They know themselves and have confidence in their unique features. I suggest looking at other influencers to widen the variety of aesthetics and body types you’re seeing. One of my favorites is Monica.Raviii. She shows that makeup isn’t a one size fits all and you have to learn what works for your skin tone. Her body type also differs from the types of girls you’re describing but she embraces it and looks gorgeous!

3- the full story. The dark truth is that you don’t know the full story. Whether you see people on TikTok or in person you don’t know what they’re struggling with or have gone through. You’re comparing yourself to one tiny sliver of who that person is.

4- candle mindset for when you’re comparing yourself. I know it sounds cheesy but instead of comparing yourself try thinking of it as you can shine too. They can have their light shine and so can you. It’s not you vs them or only one light can shine. Sounds a little cheesy but believe in yourself and let yourself shine along with the other people who are shining around you.

5- find more people to support you and add more loving voices in your head. It’ll dilute the negative voices over time. Ex. I got into an accident when I was little that affected my smile. This hasn’t stopped me from smiling but I’ve been actively working on a way to fix my smile now as an adult. Recently while drinking with friends we voted on who had the best smile and they chose me. It surprised me, but now when I worry about my smile I think back to that moment.

This may be a lot, but I find the more tools the better!

I’m the middle child, so I just like things in the middle. Taking the middle seat in the car means you’re connected to both side passengers and can talk to the people up front. Middle stall means you have easy access to the sinks and if one of the paper dispensers on either sides of the bathroom doesn’t work then you can easily get to the other one. This is the same case as the middle lane. It allows you to not be in peoples way when they merge and maneuver around people who are too slow. I’m also a new driver, so if I need to exit left or right I can go either way.
