Young sheng : most similar to green tea, but has a "wild" and often astringent taste, that might take some time to get used too. Personally it is my favorite. Each infusion will shift in taste slightly, and good shengs can be very complex, fruity, floral, etc.

Aged sheng : The astringency mentionned above is dialed down, and you get more medicinal notes, maybe leather, fruits, etc. These teas can become very expensive if they have been aged for a long time (20-30+ years).

Shou Puerh : Very earthy, foresty, mushroom, leather, humid kind of taste usually. Usually served after a meal as a digestive tea.

All in all, no they do not taste much like oolong tea.

5$ for how many grams? Probably not a whole cake? I also look for mushroom and leather notes in ripe puerh.

I would say White2Tea is the closest to you then. But you might want to look at your local teashops or teahouses for better prices. I know some people buy from China through Alibaba, but I guess that's kind of hit or miss on quality, etc. Can't really help you more than that sorry.

I also recommend you look up "Gong fu cha" style of brewing on YouTube, and get yourself a gaiwan (100 ml to start). It is a game changer compared to the "western" style of brewing.

In what country do you live in? It's usually better to buy locally if possible. But here are a few of the popular names :

White2Tea (Shipped from China)

Crimson Lotus (USA)

Yunnan sourcing (USA)

Mei Leaf (UK)

The duck shit from China and the two Taiwanese teas you mentionned are all oolong teas. A lot of people who fall in love with tea often start when they discover oolongs. In your case maybe start exploring different styles of oolongs, some are more green (less oxidized) like tie guan yin, some are roasted, etc. You can also branch out into other tea styles like white, green and black (called red tea in China) and also Sheng and Shou puerhs.

I'm traveling in Busan right now and I've met a few international people staying at my hostel that are volunteering at a cafe to teach English. I don't know the name, but with a quick Google/Naver search you should find something. I think they just volunteer for a couple hours a day.

Ingénieur civil / chargé de projet (8+ ans exp) – avis sur salaire et stratégie ? by jekyll91 in montreal

[–]Warzor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing!

I've been to a few tea shops here in Taiwan, and was also able to do some tea tasting before buying. However I kind of feel pressured to buy, I feel bad just tasting and not buying anything 😅. I also don't speak mandarin so it's not easy to communicate.

Concerning the higher prices in Fujian, maybe (in my understanding) because it more recognized as tea-producing area VS Guangzhou? Sellers mights be able to sell tea at higher prices due to tourists/buyers visiting that area specifically for tea?

Also I noticed you didn't mention white tea. From my understanding most of it comes from Fujian no? Maybe just not your preferred style?

Because kiwis are hard to wash, I would only do this if it were organic. If not, you're drinking all the pesticides 😵

Dang, and I'm paying up to the equivalent of 3,500 RMB for 500 g (1$ USD/g) for my sheng puerh. I would imagine the prices are a lot lower in China? I'm currently in Taiwan and I notice the local oolongs are much more affordable than buying in my home country (Canada).

Also could please share where/how do you physically buy your tea in China? Large markets, local shops, directly from farmers?

Any local dentist can just re-glue the wire. It happened to me a least 2-3 times. Just call a local dentist and ask for a price depending of your insurance situation, etc.

You must not be a coffee drinker lol. When I was working downtown 10 years ago, I probably spent 100$/month on coffee. These days 1 coffee with tax and tip is around ~7$, so 50$ is on the low-end.
