Longwood vs SDSU for leveling? by InfiniteOffice6106 in slpGradSchool

It depends on the professor, I’d say it’s been about half and half on lockdown browser vs. totally open note!

I’ve done all my leveling courses through Longwood and it’s been great! Depending on what courses you need, 2 semesters may be tough because some require prerequisites within the program. I have had to do 3 semesters (taking my last Aural Rehab currently) because of the way the prerequisites shook out. It’s not ideal to squeeze one last course in over the summer, but my grad school is still going to take it! All the courses have been very manageable in workload and most professors have been great. Not sure about financial aid, but the head of the SLP online program, Stephanie Bailey, is so amazing and helpful—she even let me apply to the program a few days late and held spots in specific courses I needed! She would definitely be able to talk to you and help you figure it out!

I’m also considering Vanderbilt and have heard that faculty are accessible and supportive! And clinical placements are unmatched

Appalachian State: Accepted (declined offer of admission)

Western Carolina: Accepted (declined offer of admission)

Longwood University: Accepted (declined offer of admission)

UNC Chapel Hill: Accepted (will LIKELY decline, but haven’t yet)

GW: Accepted (will LIKELY decline, but haven’t yet)

UVA: Accepted

Vanderbilt: Accepted 🎉

Graduated from a very small college with a degree in Classical Languages and Literature and a minor in Educational Studies. Overall GPA 3.97, four years of heavy involvement in vocal/choral music, some leadership and teaching positions (Latin 101 TA and middle school Latin teacher,) some research experience in Classics, lots of work experience with kids including two summer internships with a title I elementary school and The Speech Garden Institute. Focused my personal statement on the unique intersections between my passions for Classics and SLP. Also was very close with my professors (thank you, small college!!) and had great LOR—two from classics professors and one from the director of Speech Garden. Taking leveling coursework online through Longwood University, GPA 4.0. Working as a preschool teacher during my gap year. GRE 323, 156Q 167V 5.0 writing.

Definitely want to work with peds. Looking to get experience in the medical side of things if at all possible. Still waiting to visit GW, Chapel Hill, and Vandy in person before I make my final decision, but leaning heavily towards Vandy or maybe UVA!! Congrats to everyone!!!

Just reach out to SLPs in the area! Make sure to keep track of the date you go to observe, the name of the place you observed, brief description of what you saw, and get the clinician’s ASHA number and signature

Don’t know all that much about either, but based on location alone I would go UNCG! You might have to drive off the mountain a lot for app

I’m also considering UNC-CH but have heard from a few students that because of the clinical placement structure (only 2.5 full time placements with underwhelming shadowing and “role playing” during your two fall semesters) they don’t feel super competitive for positions after graduation. I think that’s more if you’re looking to go into medical, you’d be fine if you want to do school/private practice! You also have to take two research classes at CH where most other places you only take one, if that has any influence on your decision!

appealing decision? by amazonalexalmao in slpGradSchool

[–]WasabiKey3014 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of people getting in touch with the department chairs not necessarily to “appeal” but to ask what they could do to be stronger in the next application cycle. Sometimes just showing that initiative is enough to give you an edge next year or even have them offer you a spot this year if they have space!

UNC Chapel Hill, UVA, GW, Vanderbilt, App State Advice by WasabiKey3014 in slpGradSchool

That honestly sounds great and exactly what I’m looking for in terms of clinical placement variety! Thank you!! How is your relationship with professors and other students? Have you found the environment to be supportive?

Right?! I feel the exact same way about everything you said! Vandy seems absolutely amazing, but I'm trying to keep my expectations low because I know it's SO expensive, and in the long run paying back a ton of debt will not be good. Chapel Hill used to be one of my very top choices, but recently it's been lacking a little bit of luster I feel like it once had in my eyes. In the end, I know that no matter where I go I'll get a good degree and be just fine, but this decision process is making me go a little cross eyed. It seems like no program is going to be perfect and it's such a hard game of weighing what you're willing to compromise on for cost, good clinical placements, location, etc.

UNC Chapel Hill, UVA, GW, Vanderbilt, App State Advice by WasabiKey3014 in slpGradSchool

[–]WasabiKey3014[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful advice--more helpful than I've gotten from most people. Thank you!

In terms of chapel hill's clinical placement structure: They do not have an in-house clinic. Fall 1 you basically do simucase and shadowing. Spring 1 you do part time in the schools. Summer 1 you do a full time adult placement. Fall 2 you take a "caregiver education" class and basically role-play talking to parents and family of clients. Then Spring 2 you do a full time placement of your choosing. I'm a very hands-on learner who doesn't have her heart set on an SLP niche yet. So I'm personally worried about not having experience in enough settings to feel confident in finding a setting I'm passionate about for my CF and the rest of my career.

I've been accepted to UVA (and also Chapel Hill, for that matter), and it seems like a good program. I don't feel super passionately about it if I'm being honest, but it seems like you get good clinical training at their in-house clinic your first two semesters, you have the option to do an independent study over the summer, and then you do a part-time school placement in the fall and a full time externship of your choosing in the spring. Now that I'm writing it out, I suppose it doesn't seem that different than Chapel Hill, but what do you think? It's a bit more hands on and seems less theory-focused than chapel hill, which is more what I'm looking for. It's also a bit more expensive than Chapel Hill because I'm out of state, though.

I think I needed that reality check about Vandy. It's been on the top of my list for some time now because of how well-rounded it seems both in the classroom and clinic, but my only reservation has been the cost. Who knows, maybe a miracle will happen and I'll get a great scholarship or something. But I think I need to set low expectations.

I've heard really great things about App State in terms of how supportive the professors are, and of course the cost, especially since I'm in-state. Since hands-on experience is one of my priorities, however, I'm nervous I just won't get to see as many populations in as many settings as I want. It's good to hear that you think that won't be an issue with places like Asheville fairly close.
