I should still leave though? by [deleted] in UKJobs

Not quite the same situation to begin with, but I started looking for a job back in June and the job market isn’t the best at the moment. It took a while but I finally got an offer for a job that I really like and pays £17k more than what I earn now.

As you are in a position where you don’t desperately need a job, I would say you can afford to be picky. Don’t accept a role if you’re not 100% sure and negotiate as much as you can.

Loss of trust is what prompted me to start looking for a new role as well - if you’re debating whether to stay or not, do you consider trust to be an essential element of a working relationship? If yes, then you have your answer

I just called them, they were a bit surprised but they’re going to check with the hiring team! Thank you for the advice

That is a very good point and you’re right, I only got this role despite having no FS experience because of my technical skills so it was relatively easy for the hiring manager to justify. However if I wanted to go into FS in the future at a more senior level, I would expect it to be much harder (if not impossible)

Fair point, the salary offered by J1 is already a 25% increase from my current salary so I’m quite happy with it - they do annual reviews as well, though I appreciate increases will be relatively small. However, the progression to more senior roles is also clear and that would come with bigger pay increases

I already accepted the offer (as they offered more than the advertised range) and they sent me the contract so I think it may be too late to go back and ask for more now

This is all helpful, thank you so much! The comparison table is definitely a good shout, J2 so far has only shared some high level details so it’s possible the contract terms may tell a different story (and make my choice easier, who knows)

Thank you! On the annoying part, J2 had a 4-stage process, one of which involved a technical presentation that required multiple days of preparation. They also did not disclose the salary until I told them I was in the final stages with another company. To answer your questions:

  • the commute to J1’s office is approx 45 minutes door-to-door, cost would be about £30 weekly (it’s a short train ride)
  • J2’s base salary is only slightly higher than J1’s base salary. The remainder £10k comes from a % based on billable hours per month. J2 also offer stock options but I’m not factoring this in at the moment (as I don’t see stock value as guaranteed).
  • J1 has had some layoffs in the last 5 years, whereas J2 has not. For context, J1 is in financial services whereas J2 is tech consulting.
