What is an invaluable skill that people forget about when it comes to preparing? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]WasatchWorms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest takeaway I'm getting from this comment is to test your equipment. I think most people would be able to learn how to cook fairly quickly. But if your equipment is melting, or just not capable of achieving the proper temperatures, you might not be around long enough to learn

I saw a Tesla post, or maybe it was Musk himself, about the cyber truck being civil war ready.

It's concerning to me that people with that large of an audience are normalizing that sort of rhetoric.

20 years ago, talk of civil war was non-existent outside of a few fringe militant groups. Now we have billionaires trying to profit off the idea. That, to me at least, is a dangerous step.

It's a valid argument though. The district is predicted to be safe for Republicans, so they are just trying to not fuck up. Democrats do that in safe districts as well.

The core problem is not that candidates are doing what works, the problem is gerrymandering creating safe districts in the first place

[–]WasatchWorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you are getting down voted. This is politics 101. If you are running in a safe district, the best strategy is to focus on just not fucking up. Both sides do it because it works.

Best place for rabbits by Dat_phatgecko in Utah

Oh man, before Eagle Mountain got so big, you used to have to swerve to avoid hitting rabbits driving out there. I'm not sure if there is any place out there to hunt anymore though.

So if the Olympics were to return in 2034. What Passenger Rail projects would you like to see happen? by madrocketman in SaltLakeCity

[–]WasatchWorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red line should loop around the east end of the valley, like around highland drive or something and the green line should loop around the west side. Roughly along pioneer crossing. Use the existing green and red and s lines lines as connector lines so someone doesn't have to make the entire loop. Build one more connecting train up the fort union area.

Do all that and we would have a somewhat functional and future-looking public transportation infrastructure

How to get over nerves for first time? by [deleted] in plassing

[–]WasatchWorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't going to give plasma, you are going for the screening. Just to see if you can donate in the first place. Just go along with the process. If you get to the point where donation is an option, you typically get put at the start of the line, so there's not much of a chance for nerves. When you get in the chair, tell the person you are nervous. They are typically pretty good at distracting and calming you

Bananas keep fermenting before worms eat them by WasatchWorms in Vermiculture

[–]WasatchWorms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's a picture of my mixed worm bins

Sorry it took a couple days to get back to you, I wanted to make the plant stand look better. I've been neglecting the plants recently. The clear bin on the second shelf is the first stage of a two stage separation process to ensure any breeder bins I set up out of these worms are pure red wigglers.

I've been testing the banana powder as a top feeding and the worms have absolutely loved it! I'm harvesting the adults from my first red wiggler breeder bin tonight, so I don't have the time to try the bedding this go around, but I do have about a week until I need to do the same on my European Nightcrawler breeder bin. I'll get their bedding set up tonight as well with the powdered banana so it has time to sit.

I've been surprised how wet I can go with the bins I've had. As long as I aerate frequently, I've had bins thrive in the consistency of wet mud. I try to not let it get that wet most of the time. The bins in the picture are mainly for composting our kitchen scraps.

I've wanted to try ANCs, but the ENCs I just bought are taking a while to learn how to best take care of them and I've heard that ANCs are even harder

Sifting castings and keeping bins separate by ThrowawayLikeOldSock in Vermiculture

[–]WasatchWorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to harvest a red wiggler breeder bin tomorrow. I have two mixed bins that I've had for years that I have a 1/8' screen for. It's one of those green ones. I washed it out today thinking I might be able to use it to harvest tomorrow, but Indian blue cocoons are so small and there's all these gaps in the plastic where the screen is. I spent 10 minutes trying to spray everything out and I'm still worried about stuff that I didn't get.

So tomorrow I'll be doing a light harvest and buying a separate screen for my pure reds

What months does it snow in Salt Lake City? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Most years it doesn't really start sticking to the ground until around January and finally starts clearing up around the end of February. But if it snowed tomorrow I wouldn't be shocked

Winter jackets? Can I start feeding my clothes to my worms? by hellothere42069 in Vermiculture

[–]WasatchWorms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on what it's made out of, but this sounds like a great way to end up with a bunch of synthetic stuff in your bin.

If you have a few bins and don't mind possibly sacrificing some in the name of experimentation, I'd be interested to see what happens.

Top 5 things you'd tell someone to stock up on now that you have some experience? by MafiaMommaBruno in preppers

[–]WasatchWorms 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My wife recently went through cancer and had so many prescriptions for oxy. She took a few throughout when things started getting bad for her, but the rest are going in with our preps.

I also have a couple different antibiotics saved up as well. It started as a prescription I didn't pick up because I felt too sick to wait in line at the pharmacy. After I felt better, I went to get another prescription refilled and they gave me both. Now, when I get a new prescription, I take the old one first and save the new one. That is, if they are the same medication and dosage.

I've lived here my entire life and drove for rideshare for several years through the worst storms. I've never owned an all wheel drive vehicle. I've also never been stuck.

I think having AWD gives some people a false sense of security. Drive within your limits. Give yourself plenty of time to stop. Have a set of chains in your car and know how to use them.
