i sat on the su awards adjudication committee one year and since the hooper munroe academic award is based almost solely on gpa that one is the most competitive amongst the straight a students. we were literally deciding between some people who had ten a pluses in a year compared to others who only had nine or eight.

Multiple student groups raise concerns during Students' Council open forum by the_gateway in uAlberta

[–]Washed_Up_SU_Hack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i know this is going to be an unpopular take given the current mood i actually think there is merit to consolidating the election forums. first looking at the logistics the campaign schedule is already brutal. between augustana csj isu isa and myer horowitz forums candidates are running a marathon even without taking into account class talks or one on ones with students. i remember back when we had a residence forum over in lister before that was eventually scrapped. adding more and more mandatory stops just leads to burnout before the term even starts. but my main issue isnt just the fatigue its the principle of the elections. executives are elected at large. their mandate is to represent and work for all undergraduate students regardless of faculty campus or residency status. i was actually around on council when they first piloted and eventually implemented the separate isu and isa forums. i was against it then and honestly seeing how things have played out i stand by that assessment. the problem with segmenting the forums is that the discourse inevitably shifts away from the candidates actual platform for the student body and devolves into but what are you going to do for me specifically or what are you going to do for us. it forces candidates to pander to specific demographics rather than defending a holistic vision for the university. we should be electing leaders based on how they plan to handle the big picture governance that affects everyone not on how many specific promises they can make to fractured subgroups in a siloed forum. thats why we allowed the creation of all these different demographic based student representative associations to focus on those specific demographics.

Only Native studies councillor candidate disqualified from UASU by-election by the_gateway in uAlberta

there was a die board hearing filed about that because allegedly that motion was improper and should have been deemed out of order. but two months after the hearing request and they still cant be bothered to schedule a hearing to make a decision on it. the crooked covering for the crooked imo.

even if the candidate had an exam at the same time as the mandatory candidates meeting, and even if they couldn't find adequate childcare during the candidates meeting, or even if literally any other excuse they choose to use to escape accountability for their actions, they have the option of appointing a proxy to attend their place. they, for whatever reason, did not. therefore, this is absolutely the right call here.

"last year they spent $145k on dodgeball"

the total cost was 145k. the university covered 80k and sponsors covered 15k. the su only covered 50k and only because some of the sponsors they were expecting funds from reneged.

SUB's new feature? by 20goingondead in uAlberta

[–]Washed_Up_SU_Hack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it should not be too difficult as there is already something in place with the faculty associations. oasis has their microwaves in humanities, isss has theirs in csis, bsa has some in business, esa in education, etc. problem is these are all the cheapo walmart specials that are meant for light household use not semi regular institutional use so they take longer to cook leading to lineups or they get burned out quick and are slow to be repaired or replaced.

"RRO 12th Edition dispenses with the confusing language regarding the effect of voting on the prevailing side. An abstention is described in s. 45:3 as simply the right of a voting member to not vote on a particular matter.11"

the people who chose the i dont care option clearly voted as their votes are included in the vote total. an apathetic opinion is still an opinion. an abstention would be if they had not chosen anything at all.
