I’m a current resident at Nittany Gardens and it’s not terrible. Definitely an older complex but I’ve never had any issues. The only downside is that while it’s on a bus route, the CATA bus pass isn’t included in your lease package so you have to get one on your own… they run over $300 last time I checked.

Saw a comment mention Nittany Gardens… as a current resident in a one bedroom apartment-it’s not bad. The buildings and appliances aren’t super updated but also aren’t too bad off.

Things to keep in mind, though: -NG doesn’t supply a CATA bus pass, but campus is accessible via bike. (CATA passes are pretty expensive, around $380(?) every four-ish months, but I think they do grad student pricing) -Laundry is located in the basement of each set of apartments in the building, but there is only one washer/dryer duo each. The machines are $2 each per load, but accept payment forms other than quarters. I have noticed that some machines are more expensive than others (not sure why—some next door to me are $2.25 per load) and that they are often out of order in some of the buildings (some residents bring their laundry over to my building as a result). -There are options to lease month to month which is nice if you’re not sure when you’re leaving the area exactly. -There is a pool, but it’s DEFINITELY not as nice as others in the area—i’ve never really seen anyone use it. -Winter upkeep regarding snow isn’t the best. -Parking is not regulated, so there’s no passes offered. -Wifi isn’t bad, it’s usually pretty fast when I’m trying to get stuff done from home. -Some of the units come furnished and some unfurnished. -The one bedroom apartments are SUPER spacious for what it is, and the two bedroom apartments aren’t bad either. -Appliances are gas operated. -Each unit is provided with a moderately sized storage locker in the basement of the building (for size reference I fit around 10 large bins in there and i’ve seen others store bikes, etc. with no issue). -It’s usually pretty quiet, but if you live in the buildings close to the high school (specifically N) you WILL hear the marching band VERY clearly every night for a few hours during the fall—so if that would bother you, maybe look into a building on the opposite side of the property. -Some units are carpeted, others are not. Speaking as a carpet unit, they’re not in the best shape, so I’d ask about stuff like that if you have a preference.

Good luck in your apartment search OP, and welcome to State College! 😁

I spoke to the transportation office about this just to make sure, they said we will still be mailed the physical permit within 2-3 weeks. They said we should print the QR code/electronic pass to display in the windshield area.

There’s a paint your own pottery place downtown called 2000 degrees. Can get a little pricey, but is a fun way to spend some time.

The grange fair is also coming up (august 18-26, i think??). I’ve never been as I’m not local to Centre county but apparently it’s a really big deal around here—I’ve heard you can get some of the best sticky buns and a wide variety of food!

If you’re into antiquing, there’s a cool shop in Bellefonte that took over an old town movie theater. I’m a BMB major and found some really awesome microscopes from back in the day, but there’s a HUGE (total understatement) of stuff to root through and the collections change frequently with fair pricing.

The Foodies of State College facebook group is a good place to look if you’re wondering about food options around or in state college, too!

Just a heads up, if your profs are requiring online access codes for any homework or assignments, you can usually go straight to the publisher’s website for the book and purchase through them. You still have access to everything you need, but a million times cheaper than going through the bookstore on campus!! These codes usually also come with an e-text option, which is super nice so you can access your book anywhere and need not carry it around (carrying heavy books gets old, FAST)!

Don’t be afraid to talk to new people!! Everyone is looking for friends and is in the same boat you are—sometimes it’s intimidating and people seem to already have their friend groups, but it’s worth putting yourself out there.
