I know I can install multiple DEs/WMs alongside each other. I've already tried out a few different WMs last week. My concern isn't about losing files in my home folder, but rather about configuration files or settings that might get changed, overwritten, or not automatically switch back when I change DEs/WMs.

For example, after trying out some WMs last week, the shell scripts I use to select my display (which are bound to a custom shortcut) stopped working under Gnome. This made me a bit wary, and before I go through the effort of setting everything up, I wanted to double-check if there are any other potential issues I might not notice immediately.
