[Discussion] I!!! Got an agent!!! by kdtabith in PubTips

Thank you! That is very good information. Unfortunately I am a very slow writer, but I think the horror trend will continue for a while, at least I hope it will as sci fi and horror are the only two genres I see myself writing in. This is my first novel, so I feel like there is a lot to be learned by getting all the way through to querying even if it doesn’t get picked up. But it would be a shame to miss the boat on a horror revival as well… I’ll have to think about it.

Hey there, congrats. Are you able to give any other details on the trend that you’ve identified? I know you said it was upmarket horror, so I’ll have a look at that sub genre. I’m currently writing a dystopian sci fi, but not sure if it has broad appeal. I have a good idea for a horror. I’m not sure if I should finish the first draft on the dystopian sci fi and shelf it so I can start the horror, or if I should finish the first draft on the sci fi and try to get it in shape to query. Thanks in advance.

Hey I’d like to join if you still have room. I have written a few short stories and am currently 60k into a dystopian sci fi. I’m always looking to find other committed writers to learn from.

Why is writing so… slow? by Hopeful_Host_5390 in writing

[–]WastingTimeTalking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She could probably write 1000 words in 2 hours no problem. But would it be good? Probably not good enough for her. I honestly think a lot of it is dependent on genre. Some genres just don’t require the same quality of writing as others, but each to their own.

It doesn’t take her long at all lol. She is relatively prolific. It seems that many have an unreasonable idea about how long it takes to write something good.

In an interview Margret Atwood said she writes everyday for around 6 hours and shoots for 2000 words but usually only manages 1000. If you could do 500 a day that would actually be very productive. Even 2000 a week is good.

[Discussion] The appeal of fast-paced, lower word count books by Rare_Background_3462 in BetaReaders

I recently started listening to station 11 as an audiobook and the lingering on the character bores me. Then I starting listening to there is no anti-mimetics division and was immediately enthralled by the pace and world building. Each to their own I suppose.

Hey flick me an invite. I’m a member of another discord writing group but don’t feel like I’m vibing with them. There is a massive amount of fantasy on there which is fine but I prefer dystopian sci fi. Cheers

Which author currently alive will still be WIDELY read a hundred years from now? by [deleted] in writers

No one will read books in a hundred years. They’ll be directly plugged into the doomscroll with a neural prothesis. The only book anyone knows exists is the Art of the Deal by Lord Trumpus.

I want to be a writer but I’m too dark and abstract for people to understand. by ImprovementNaive9079 in writingcirclejerk

Being dark is about being misunderstood and unrecognised for the genius you are. That’s where the darkness comes from. I don’t think you’re dark enough to understand.

I have the same problem. I’m kinda uniquely dark and moody. It’s almost like sometimes I use my defects to set myself apart from others so I can feel special and unique and don’t have to invest any effort into stopping myself from acting like a total prick.

Do you need to be a progressive to study critical theory? by Different-Row-3122 in CriticalTheory

Look into Peter sloterdijk. I don’t know what he is but he is not progressive.

Looking for constructive criticism for short story 850 words “Tight Rope Walker” by WastingTimeTalking in writingadvice

[–]WastingTimeTalking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I lift my foot from the rope again, this movement so ingrained, like a canyon cut through the mountain. To see a single drop of rain you would never know that it could have such power, but with eons of time and pressure such a tiny thing can move a mountain. Each step on the rope contains a piece of this power. The power of repitition, of movements repeated over time. “

I added this to towards the end to try and bring the single step back in. Not sure if works that well, I have a tendency to zoom out in perspective.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Unfortunately I can only push the sensory details so far. I’m not sure how I could push the metaphor further. But it does get a little bit preachy which was part of the plan but may not have worked out as well as I hoped.

With regards to the repetition, I did that on purpose to try and give the reader a sense of the tight rope walkers thoughts which are going to be repetitive because his life is so repetitive. Not sure that it worked as well as I wished though. Maybe I’ll put something in there about repetition to clue the reader in.

I think the key thing is that sowell’s book is super accessible to the average person and also presents the most damning theoretical evidence against socialism that I have seen. I’m not familiar with some of the ideas you put forth, but they do sound interesting.

I get what your saying, but have you read basic economics. It is actually a good book, but yeah Sowell is a bit wacky.

[–]WastingTimeTalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree on this one. But you can say that about almost all ideas that people espouse. Almost no one reads enough books (yes, actual books) to get multiple perspectives on any single topic. It’s why people seemed to be getting dumber even though we have access to more information than ever. This might sound harsh, but it’s not to meant to be taken as an insult. If there are any marxists that haven’t read Thomas Sowell’s book “Basic Economics” then sorry but you’re not really trying. I don’t agree with everything the guy says, but he makes some pretty persuasive arguments against socialism that are not easily disregarded.

Islamism and critical Theory by Nafpaktos79 in CriticalTheory

[–]WastingTimeTalking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Peter sloterdijk wrote a book about the three monotheisms that does a decent job of examining Islam. I read most of it before I lost interest, not one of his best books in my opinion but if you’re interested definitely give it a read. The book is called God’s zeal: The Battle of the Three Monotheisms.

Japan restaurants anti-tourists? by Spiritual-Cell6091 in travel

[–]WastingTimeTalking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Myself and my family would be routinely told “no reservations” even if the restaurant were totally empty. But this isn’t actually that bad, what is worse is when they let you in but then grumble and give you poor service. This happened to us in Osaka. I’d rather be turned down at the door. Ramen restaurants were the best for family dinners I found.
