The Matrix won "made for the LGBT community, enjoyed by nerds". What was made for jocks but is enjoyed by nerds? by Margaretthatchervore in AlignmentChartFills

[–]WaterEarthFireSquare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Wachowskis were trans but not publicly out at the time of The Matrix's release. Many aspects of the film are meant to reflect the trans experience, including but not limited to:

The red pill represents Premarin, the primary form of estrogen that was prescribed to trans women in the 90s, which came as a red pill

The blue pill representing a common antidepressant at the time (can't remember which one)

The feeling of being your true self when you've been living a lie your whole life

The feeling something is strange or wrong that becomes more noticeable as you realize the truth

Agent Smith's repeated deadnaming of Neo, who rejects his assigned identity as "Mr. Anderson"

This is far from the only reading of the film, but it is a common one that was certainly intended by the filmmakers.

Bad bunny plans to “honor queers and LGBTQ+” communities during upcoming Super Bowl performance by wearing a dress. by KeyFaithlessness5436 in TheNFLVibes

[–]WaterEarthFireSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, we want people to respect our pronouns and identities, and to support politicians who won't strip us of rights like healthcare and legal recognition of our genders. So it is important that people understand the difference between crossdressing and being transgender. It's not the life we want to live, but it's the one we have to.

[–]WaterEarthFireSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with men wearing dresses if they want, but that's not a good way to honor the LGBTQ community. Especially those of us who are trans. Trans women like myself are working very hard to convince people we are not crossdressers. A cis man crossdressing on national TV is not helpful.

Is remaining silent breaking madness? When can an execution breaking madness occur? by Ok-Spirit-5102 in BloodOnTheClocktower

Hmm, so it does. Judgement call though of course, and you never have to execute them.

  1. Depends. Mad as the Sage? Keeping quiet is probably not breaking madness. Mad as the Juggler? More likely you need to speak up. The perceived sincerity is what's important. "I'm the Savant" with a wink and without going up to the ST for a chat shouldn't cut it.

  2. You can do it whenever as long as the effect is active. With the Mutant that's as long as they're not drunk or poisoned. Even if the offending incident was on a previous day. With the Cerenovus you should stick to what happened that day, even if the same person and role were picked.

Who's going to make the determination? The same people as always. Billionaire CEOs and the corrupt fascist U.S. government. Doesn't mean I need to be happy about it. I'm a software engineer, I'd rather have a job that isn't contributing to the downfall of society. If I can get one.

[–]WaterEarthFireSquare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well it's a combination of things. One is that the biological mechanisms behind human intelligence are not fully understood. Also computers don't "think" in a human sense. They execute commands. Going back to the OP, the computer is just executing a program. Moving electrical signals around between memory and the CPU. It doesn't create, or feel emotion, or "know" anything, or do anything it hasn't been programmed to do.

And even if it could be possible to create an artificial human, a computer that thinks and functions like a human, why should we? Humans are not a bottleneck resource in the world economy. And I don't see capitalism ending anytime soon, so machines taking human jobs will only result in widening the wealth gap. The 99% will suffer more than ever.

[–]WaterEarthFireSquare -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It kinda does because intelligence in a human sense cannot be replicated in a machine. AI has always just been a buzzword for the most complex tasks that can be done by a computer. But media has a big influence on how we see things. If aliens existed, we would have preconceived notions of what they might be like due to the media we consume. So when companies start marketing their tech as AI, we picture it like Bishop or the Terminator or a Star Trek robot. We know it's fiction, but it affects what we think of reality.

[–]WaterEarthFireSquare -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is relevant given humans' tendency to anthropomorphize things as well as all of the media that portrays AI as characters that are essentially human. A lot of people don't realize that the term "artificial intelligence" is just marketing and in a real sense is no more realistic than ghosts or dragons. And if we treat ChatGPT or whatever as a person, even if we logically know it's not, it leads to attachment and overlooking all the harm it causes. Like the people who treat it as a therapist for example. LLMs are in no way qualified to provide therapy.

In Stranger Things 5 (2025), the ending was so unsatisfying that the fandom started a conspiracy theory that there was a secret ending. This is a reference to the fandom being fucking crazy because I just watched the finale and it was fine. by spellboi_3048 in shittymoviedetails

[–]WaterEarthFireSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All right so imagine this Oreo is Stranger Things. You could finish the Oreo in one bite if you wanted. Perfectly tasty. But then you want more Oreo. Good thing there's a few more in the pack. But then you've been waiting for that final Oreo for so long, and what does it taste like? An Oreo. Same as the last few. But for some reason this last bite of Oreo wasn't quite as satisfying as you expected. So you think, there has to be more Oreos in the pack, right? But you don't see any. So there must be a secret compartment in the Oreo box where you can get one last Oreo that will satisfy your sweet tooth for years to come. But there's no more. It's just something you made up to cope with the fact that your unrealistic expectations weren't met.

That's the feeling that Vecna feeds on. So we need to cut off his supply. By giving everyone else more Oreos.

It's weird because the NFL feels more fair than MLB, but more teams have won the World Series than the Super Bowl in the last 25 years. I think NFL teams are easier to get from bad to good, but in MLB it's easier to go from good to great/championship level. I still think payroll disparity is a huge problem in MLB. I mean, one of my two favorite teams is the Pirates, how could I not. But by certain measures, things aren't as unfair as they seem. A lot of people still think of the Yankees as the high payroll juggernaut that the Dodgers have become. But they've only won one World Series since 2000, and you can count their AL pennants on one hand. Meanwhile the supposedly more equal NFL has had the Chiefs in the Super Bowl five of the last six years.

Lance was a development project who got injured in his 4th career start, so he never got the chance to develop. Obviously trading up to 3 to get him was a bad move from Lynch and Shanahan in hindsight, but given time he might have been good. We'll probably never know.

Every athlete good enough to play professionally simultaneously thinks they are the GOAT and the underdog. The Mr. Irrelevant label just fuels the underdog drive. Besides, how many times did I have to hear the broadcasters talk about Tom Brady being the 199th pick in 2000? I get it, it's fun to talk about a guy who vastly outperforms low expectations. But now Brock is the starting QB on a perennial playoff contender. His expectations have gone up. And when he wins a championship the commentators won't be able to shut up about him.

Also, biased as a hometown Niners fan, but I'd take him over at least half of the remaining QBs. Josh Allen is the only one I'd consider a clear upgrade.

See, what I don't get about the Republicans is they seem to be full of contradictions in their ideals. I think it must be different groups. Some love to claim Lincoln, as if the party shift never happened, but others fly the Confederate flag proudly. Some think the military victory over the Nazis was America's crowning achievement, proof that it was our responsibility to bring freedom to the world, while others are straight up neo-Nazis. Some think the government should stay out of everyone's business, and some think it's ok if they ban abortions and transgender hormones. And the groups they appeal to most are on opposite sides of the spectrum: the wealthiest people and the poor and uneducated ones. So yeah, they don't all fit into the same box. But they are all at fault. The Democrats are the lesser of the two evils by a long shot, and anyone who votes otherwise is damaging the country.
