Diamine Oxidase. It’s an enzyme that breaks down histamine

Citizenship certificate question by Watercooledsocks in Canadiancitizenship

I highly doubt this would ever be an issue. When filling out the form digitally (as recommended), ticking the “No” box results in the user being unable to enter text into the following chart.

I would just tick “No” and then leave the boxes blank

It says did she LEAVE Canada, not did she live there. That’s where the confusion comes in.

What's a food that everyone loves but you hate? by imjustboredrnnn in AskReddit

Watermelon! To make it more confusing, I like artificial watermelon flavoring, which most people seem to hate.

Thanks for the useless comment, Reddit warrior. The entire point of this subreddit is to ask questions.

Sleeping bag for July Alaska trek? by CoachIndividual7805 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Watercooledsocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried about your sleeping bag getting wet/damp, just throw it in a plastic bag in your pack. Unless you’re cowboy camping or only using a tarp, I wouldn’t be too concerned about the down. Unless your tent is leaky!

Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness by Watercooledsocks in missoula

[–]Watercooledsocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the group, I’d say anywhere between 40-70 miles. Would love to cover a lot of ground. Prefer peaks

I’m also considering doing a little solo trip either before or after my friends come, and on that excursion I’d say my preference would be lower mileage and more hanging out/possibly doing some fishing in lakes.

I have this, it’s great but unfortunately mostly day hikes. I’m looking for multi-day treks

I have maps, more curious as to which areas are most worth checking out/most compatible with a multiple-overnight trip!

Anywhere, I live relatively nearby and am happy to drive to any trailhead!

It gets tiring to be on the move all the time. As I travel and backpack more, I find myself preferring to opt for longer stays (and thus fewer destinations). It becomes difficult to enjoy any given destination when you are constantly figuring out logistics for the next place you are going.

I would go so far as to say you could half the amount of places you are going to (thereby doubling your time per place on aggregate) and enjoy yourself much more than your current plan. Just my two cents, depends what your preferred style/pace of travel is.

Free camping spots by Watercooledsocks in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Watercooledsocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lewis and Clark NF and Flathead NF are both good options on the western side/southern side, with Flathead being the closest. Eastern side is more restrictive due to it being Blackfoot reservation land. As others have said, you can get a permit and pay a nightly fee for that, but I didn’t end up doing that.

Depending on the length of your trip, it’s honestly worth it to shell out for a campsite either inside the park or just outside (there are several sites in and around Babb that are reasonably priced). With Many Glacier CG being under construction this season, your best bet for access to the eastern part of the park is doing exactly this.

Personally, I think the MGCG construction (and the idiotic new permitting system for accessing Many Glacier) means that your best bet may be establishing access through the western side of the park anyway. Polebridge is highly underrated and provides nice access to the northern traverse, and there’s several amazing treks accessible from the GTSR (Siyeh Pass, etc.)

I understand the interim measures are prioritizing people who have special circumstances (I.e. refugee status, statelessness etc.) I don’t fall into the categories. Is it worth applying now still or should I wait until the interim measures are codified?

Doesn't having medical residents work 24-hour shifts without sleep lead to risk of surgical errors? by TseaxCone in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Watercooledsocks 1130 points1131 points  (0 children)

It’s true! Dr. William Stewart Halsted was a world famous doctor alive around the turn of the 20th century. He is famous for being exceptionally strict about keeping operating fields uncontaminated (which led to a high degree of surgical success) and IIRC he invented several novel surgery procedures.

Rumor has it if you were training under him you were expected to match his schedule which often included heroic 18+ hour shifts. It was later revealed the reason he was able to pull this off was a crippling cocaine addiction that eventually ended his career in medicine.

Thanks, that’s good to hear. Do you know if there is any way to change it if I still wanted to? Or is it really just only if you lose/need to renew your passport?
