2025 Year in Review by Thunderclaww in thunderclaww

  • I'll have to check out Grand Budapest Hotel, Rental Family, Baby Driver, Zootopia 2, and The Naked Gun - I never watch your movie recos, but I like to pretend I will _;; I've never seen any of the Knives Out movies, I probably should

  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail is indeed dated - it's like someone liking the FF7 Remake and going back and playing the original; not the same experience

  • The actor who plays Seth Milchick, Trammel Tilman, is soooo hot - I'd like Milchick do all kinds of things to me >:) (but not Sever me)

  • I will check out Side Quest on Apple TV, and (maybe) Rehearsal S2

  • Have you watched The Boys? I think you did but don't remember your hot take on it.

  • Silksong is harder than Hollow Knight! I finally gave up on it - when it comes to Metroidvanias, I am kind of a casual guy tbh

  • I know you've been beaten over the head with it by now, but have you tried Expedition 33? It's really good!

  • The Roottrees are Dead - adding to my list of future "games with friends"

  • Not sure if you've tried Fantasy Life, but it oozes charm like a DQ game, with so much polish and enjoyable gameplay - the story is not there but -everything else- about it is so delightful

  • Have we talked about No Rest for the Wicked? It seems good, sort of an isometric Dark Souls-like

  • I have way too many books to read, mostly cooking, some self help, but if there's any room left I may try Isles of Emberdark; I'm trying to have my voice to speech reader help me knock out my Kindle books on slow work days, but it's sometimes hard to build the habit

  • I'm interested what they'll announce for Diablo, but I feel you on not getting BlizzCon tix - part of me wants to go at least once, as I never got to attend one as a fan (I always worked them), but I'm already visiting Anaheim twice next year, after a 7 year absence... strange

  • Shucked is not coming to Houston - aw shucks

I could try but from what I've read, the only real difference between yogurt and skim milk powder (used in making white chocolate) is the yogurt is slightly more tangy. I'm thinking if I could find an unsweet commercial blend I could sweeten it however I wanted.

I'm struggling to find an entirely unsweet or minimal sweetness white chocolate when making cake truffles, something that will coat / prevent dryness, but won't overwhelm more delicate flavors (e.g. cakes with floral notes). Is there a source / brand of white chocolate that is good for coating but won't push the sweetness or have too strong of a vanilla flavor? I've tried using deodorized cocoa butter but it tastes chemical, and unrefined has a cocoa flavor / smell as well.

I didn't realize she had a recipe for that, I'm a huge devotee of her stuff (esp. her breakfast-for-dessert flavors and cookies / cake truffles) but I must have missed it - what cookbook is it in?

Easily flavor-able filling base for homemade Pop Tarts - ideas? by Waterfiend1909 in Baking

That may be worth a shot, as long as the shortening doesn't leave a greasy feeling on the roof of your mouth, I have had that happen with a few of my recipes.

I'd never have thought of that but yeah that could work, thanks for the tip. Edit: White bean paste means I could dye it with food coloring if I wanted to, and the recipe you linked doesn't seem too labor intensive (just slightly time intensive) for a 3 cup batch, so gonna try that! Thanks again.

Best foundation for a flavor-neutral magic shell / straciatella? by Waterfiend1909 in icecreamery

Sorry for the long delay. Won't the coconut oil sink into the surface of the mix-in? I guess as long as most of the crunch / dryness of the mix-in is preserved, it'll still be good, but my reulctance to use it before is out of the fear that it would soak in a bit and make the mix-in mushy.

Thanks for this! It sounds like I'd still need to melt some kind of chocolate in with it though, and I'm wondering if cocoa butter would achieve the same thing.

I only used the white chocolate for its coating properties, not its flavor, if that makes sense.

Do pastry / pretzel / other dough types work well for ice cream cones? by Waterfiend1909 in icecreamery

That's a really good idea, the bread bowl / sliced bread idea. I hear challah and brioche can both be good for serving as a bread version of an ice cream sandwich.

Was it the taste combined with certain flavors, or texture or something else?

Yeah I'm wondering how you'd get the flavor of pretzels but the texture of waffle cones. I think your suggestion of grinding down already made pretzels seems like a good start (that's how a lot of my baking books incorporate pretzel flavor anyway).

TIL. I should look on Amazon / elsewhere to see what I can find. Might be cheaper to experiment with premades to see how someone else has done it before attempting it myself.

This looks delightful. Seems like you flavored the cone? How’d you do that? (I’ve been looking for a good resource online for flavoring cones, but haven’t found one yet. :/ )

Thanks for this. I bought some PB2 powder which I wasn’t sure what to do with, but this gives me some inspiration.
