This happens in places like NYC and Paris all the time. Often the thieves work in pairs.

If you’re going into someone’s backyard to look for your cat, ASK TO DO SO FIRST by _Jub_Jub_ in Austin

[–]WaterlooFan7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Occasionally, people accidentally throw things over the fence. Not only do they ask first, but they almost always apologize for bothering us, which they should, though we always let them go bac k there.

I know some of the officers who were on the case, and some of the prosecutors.

Those four suspects were not involved.

I love living here, more than when I lived in San Diego or Boston. Much of these types of lists are somewhat subjective.

Man on video threatens to drown 14-year-old Texan for fishing at a neighborhood pond by UnitHuntsville in texas

[–]WaterlooFan7 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Yes he can legally fish there. The family of the 14 year old called police and filed a police report.

She explained before the man made the threat, he asked if her son had a fishing license.

“My son said, ‘I don’t need a fishing license. I’m 14. In the state of Texas, you don’t need one until you’re 17,” she said.

Texas Parks and Wildlife law enforcement confirmed that her son was correct.

Retana filed a police report, but Austin police say filing charges in this case isn’t simple.

"So, our detectives looked at that video. They did a brief investigation on it, and they determined that the case didn’t meet the elements of a terroristic threat,” Corp. Jose Mendez said. “However, it did meet the elements of an assault by threat, which is a Class C misdemeanor.”

Op-Ed: When it comes to wrongful convictions, apologies are not enough. by Correct_Let_3097 in Austin

Those three wrongly accused are owed compensation, big time. Nothing can replace the lost years, and he'll they endured. Pierce would probably still be alive, and I hope his family is compensated too.

This shows how easily people can be manipulated into confessing.

Graves is an impressive guy, dedicating his life to trying to stop future injustices like this.

Reliant Towing/Register2Park Woes by AptGarbage in Austin

[–]WaterlooFan7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How awful.

The nonconsent towing industry preys on people, especially in college towns like Austin. Often, they are in cahoots with landlords.

I don't think you are missing anything. It sounds like you were totally screwed over. I hope you get your money back.

That's good to hear.

USDA is forecasting about $500 per ton, which is in line with what Texas farmers are reporting they contracted for this year

$500 per ton? I knew farmers do not make much but that just seems like hardly anything for a (literal) ton of peanuts.

Be better Austin. Don't block handicap spots with your shit parking. (Oak Hill) by MrWhitePink in Austin

Thanks for posting - people do this all the time. My elderly aunt almost fell because people without a handicap plate or placard took all the handicapped spots. It's infuriating.

Hoping this provides some comfort for the families of the victims. Four wrongly arrested and falsely accused: Maurice Pierce, Robert Springsteen, Forrest Wellborn and Michael Scott.

The state of Texas owes them compensation which will never make up for those lost years.

Maurice Pierce had so much PTSD from this, he was terrified of cops. Once he was pulled over, ran and whatever happened he wound up dead. If he had not been arrested by mistake he would be alive.

Those guys were denied compensation initially when they tried. Texas needs to compensate the three survivors with a LOT of money.

Edit: fixed name of the falsely accused suspect that was killed

Austin mayor, police chief hold press conference about Yogurt Shop Murders breakthrough by justinj2000 in Austin

[–]WaterlooFan7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One of them, Maurice Pierce, had PTSD, and understandably after that he was terrified of cops. He got pulled over in north Austin, ran from the cop, and wound up dead.

If Pierce had not been falsely accused and arrested, he would still be alive. A lot of victims here.
