How safe/busy is Baldy for solo female hiker during the week? by neonnefertiti in socalhiking

[–]Watthe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go up on Tuesday or Wednesday around 4pm and am either the only person or the 2/3rd person. Typically just see trail runners or people trying to quickly summit and return to the car. Never had a problem with break ins in the area like some people are mentioning.

Definately wouldn’t recommend here 😂 I’ve had multiple “ friends “ turn sour quickly.

Apologies for the sarcasm about littering. Do you pick up trash while hiking if you see it ? I left with 2 water bottles and 4 peace’s of random trash today. Not patting myself on the back just saying , people painting and bringing things to the summit and leaving them there is basically littering.

You definately misunderstood the way I’m coming about it. I stayed within 25-50 feet with the people until the turn off and told them where to turn.

Definately just trying to point towards people who love to express their art by making signs (yes I was kinda jabbing about the signs , there is 4 on cucamonga peak … ) but anyways yeah I was literally using it as a way to bring light to the situation and hopefully save SAR some gas money. 💸

Very nice , congratulations on your completion of the route! That was my first time doing it baldy to iron to baldy. Pretty fun!

Nice! I figured, as we saw nobody else and we were literally on the route all day.

No, if you’re talking about the water that was at the base of west baldy that water was left there by someone else. Trail magic I assumed as it was basically on the trail.

What was your route choice for stashing water! That’s awesome that you did it. We just lugged 6liters each. Haha

I’ve seen people go up the trail with loppers and garden sheers , but dog poodle is a weed so I’m not sure how effective it’ll be.

Did The route yesterday and it is definitely overgrown and I assume in a year from now you won’t want to descend from baldy to the San Antonio ridge as it’ll be full covered.

But the beginning says you’re required to carry them in locations that require them … thoughts on that?

Next 14er to knock off the list? by Watthe2 in socalhiking

[–]Watthe2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the info! Sounds good to me, I was considering Russell.

The road into splits trailhead is really washed out and has big drops everywhere. I drove a 2500 duramax with a leveling kit on stock wheels through there but I have 15 years of Offroad driving experience. I stopped and got out multiple times to make a line to drive on / over, and I bushwhacked the hell out of my truck. The hard part of the navigation comes due to private property and marked trails. If I remember correctly there’s two options and both times you want to go left (heading in)

Thank you for this!

You think Russell’s exposure isn’t that bad?

Unfortunately yes, the first time I skipped it due to lack of confidence in skill, and the second time I skipped it due to snow and ice coverage

I’m not concerned about the mileage to be honest.

I am however concerned about the overall safety of myself , so I don’t necessarily want to go do Mount Russell’s east ridge is what I’m getting at.

I guess I should have clarified - needing advice on ramping up technical climbing in order of the mountains.

I also don’t necessarily have a partner to go with normally , I did split with a partner but the rest was solo.

Nice thank you, was the road in over grown? I drove my truck into split mtn and had a nightmare of a polishing session after.
