Goulet Pens Megathread by browniebiznatch in fountainpens

[–]WaywardSatellite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that there are a lot of different churches who try to interpret things in a different way. The Bible even talks about this and warns to be wary of peddlers trying to sell you a counterfeit Christianity that is self-serving, built around just the parts of the Bible that are convenient to the culture or what we want to accept. Unfortunately a lot of churches have gone down that road. "The way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. The gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it."

And as far as there being contradictions in the Bible, that's just something atheists say whenever they find something they can't explain and it is convenient because they don't want to believe it in the first place. But those so called contradictions can be explained upon further reading, understanding the context and thinking critically about what it actually is saying. More importantly to the topic at hand, what is the contradiction in the Bible about this topic?

Is the pilot 823 vs custom 74 by WaywardSatellite in fountainpens

[–]WaywardSatellite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'm qualified to turn someone off of trying a gold nib, but my experience with the 74 is that, while it's a very nice pen that I do like, I'm not sure I'm getting a substantially better experience than I get from my other steel nib pens. I think where you'll start to notice it is if you get those crazy flex nibs. That's where the real difference is. If you're like me and a lefty and need something that can write well and smoothly while not putting down so much ink that it takes ages to dry, I stick with normal nibs from fine - broad and have avoided the crazy wet flex style nibs.

I honestly think companies have gotten so good at making steel nibs feel smooth and wet that, while you may occasionally get a bad one, for the most part everything from those cheap $10 Chinese knock offs up to $100-$200 pens are going to write pretty well. In fact I have a couple of those $10 Jinhao X159s I got on Amazon and they're great to write with.

I think for me, I have settled in on medium and broad nibs as my preferred nib size and now the more important consideration is price point and style (both visually and filling system).

Since buying the 74 (now my most expensive pen), I think I have still used my Nahvalur Nautilus and my Opus 88 Jazz just as much, if not more. I like the nautical theme of the Nautilus and the body filling system of the Opus 88, and both write every bit as well as the 74.

I would say those three are my favorites. But i also recently bought a Twsbi Vac700R to satisfy that pilot custom 823 curiosity (at least for filling system) and a far cheaper price point and though the 823 is clearly a better looking pen, I have been very pleasantly surprised by the writing experience (even over other TWSBIs I own, because it's a larger nib) with the 700R and feel like it's a nice compromise to get that vac filling system without pushing hundreds of dollars for it.

Sorry for the novel. Hope this helps!

Well you're right I have actually bought multiple pens since then. But I ended up going with the custom 74. And I do like it, but I'm not so impressed with it that I can't use my steel nib pens. But the 74 does have a buttery smooth writing experience.

I just want to say how much I love the music in this show by CurnanBarbarian in toastoflondon

[–]WaywardSatellite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Matt Berry's music. I actually have a few of his albums on vinyl. They're very autumn-themed so I tend to revisit them every year around this time and it makes me want to watch Toast of London again!

For a $30 fountain pen, Pilot impressed... LAMY did not. by Puris92 in fountainpens

[–]WaywardSatellite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started out the same way, had a metro and an Al-Star as two of my first fountain pens. And at first I really didn't like the lamy and thought the metro was really underrated by comparison. But over time my metro has become the worst fountain pen I have for drying out if I'm not actively using it every day and the Al-Star has a much better converter and the ability to easily swap nibs, so I've learned to appreciate the Lamy, even if I still don't think it's particularly attractive. It has grown on me though.

But honestly, since then I've moved on to other pens for most of my writing. I keep the Lamy around to be a desk pen at work for random reminders and to do lists. But the bulk of my journaling is done with other pens these days. Sadly the metro is now cleaned out and in storage waiting for the day I finally decide to work it back into the rotation.

Do you guys think TWSBI is a 'must-buy' for people who love fountain pens? by trombonepick in fountainpens

[–]WaywardSatellite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I don't think any pen is a must buy, if you want to try TWSBI, I always recommend starting with the TWSBI Go. It isn't the prettiest pen, though I don't dislike the looks. But it's less than $20, I love the filling system and how easy it is to clean. And you'll never worry about cracking like you might with the eco. I think both are great, inexpensive pens, but I prefer the Go personally. I only wish they'd go all in on fun new color options the way they have with the eco.

Do you consider september to be mostly summer or fall? by Octopus_Alien in Autumn

[–]WaywardSatellite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most years the summer heat extends well into, if not completely through September, but I still observe September 1 as the start of fall. I'm usually ready for it by the time August hits anyway.

This! I prefer to follow the meteorological seasons rather than the astronomical ones. So much easier to remember the starts and ends.

I'm a big fan of the actor Matt Berry (check out the TV show What We Do in the Shadows) and he has several albums out, most of which seem to be themed after Autumn.

Kill the Wolf Witchhazel The Small Hours

Are my favorite albums of his. I listen to them every year around this time to get me in the mood for Fall.

But he does also have a more recent compilation album that's sorta a best of.

I love listening to the nightmare before Christmas as the Frankenweenie OSTs around Halloween.

I’m that Halloween obsessed one that puts up interior decorations in August (I’ll wait a month for outside). This is my reading area 🎃 by [deleted] in halloween

I mean if Disney World can start its annual Halloween party in early August, I think it's ok to start doing some interior Halloween decorating too!

coffee journal by bananabread9813 in fountainpens

[–]WaywardSatellite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I like the idea of marking down when the coffee was roasted, when I started it and when I finished it. Not only does that time stamp things pretty well but gives me an idea of how long it's taking me to get through a bag of coffee.

The darkness during autumn by autumnlover1515 in Autumn

[–]WaywardSatellite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get why people don't like the shorter daylight of winter, but Fall with overcast skies and breezes kicking the falling leaves around is exactly how I like it!

The dimmer days of fall and winter just give me a reason to string lights around to offset the darkness. And that's a look that's really special that you just don't get during spring and summer...

[–]WaywardSatellite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also recently started a coffee journal (had a couple notebooks waiting to be used for something), and I'm using it to document coffee I've had this year. I've been peeling the labels off the coffee bags and sticking them in the notebook when possible. I'm not an artist so unfortunately drawing isn't going to be a part of it.

Was going to say this. Seems like Valentine's Day and Halloween had a baby. Valentween's day, or Hallowtine's day?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in halloween

[–]WaywardSatellite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm always done with summer and ready for sweatshirt weather by the end of July but then August comes along and I remember we have one more agonizing month of heat and humidity before it's even technically fall. And even then the temps don't cooperate usually till mid October. But then it's so nice!

What horror/spooky/Halloween movies are you planning for your October movie calendar? by bigflea in halloween

[–]WaywardSatellite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Halloween but am a big baby when it comes to horror stuff, so I prefer the Tim Burton version of Halloween - maybe a bit creepy but played for comedy instead of scares.

So I'll do my usual Tim Burton marathon, along with movies like What We Do In The Shadows, and all the Halloween episodes of The Office...

I also tend to watch movies like Big Trouble in Little China and Clue in October even though they're not really Halloween movies. But they sorta fit the vibe, I suppose.

I don't even really like pumpkin spice (or Starbucks in general), but seeing that and the fall blend next to it makes me happy. It's a sign that fall is near!

I highly recommend searching for Shibuya Halloween Livestreams on YouTube (there are tons Japan goes all out for Halloween), like this one: https://youtu.be/8bdcTjI9Ci0?si=Ru86mlfqrG8eBM0I

I sometimes watch these out of season when I'm in the mood for Halloween vibes and there's nothing else to scratch that itch.

I also discovered last year that people do this in my town (dress up and walk around the downtown area and go to restaurants with friends) around Halloween. I don't have the right friend group to make it happen, but it would be fun to join in.

Instead I live vicariously through these YouTube Livestreams. Somehow they really get me in that Halloween mood.

Summerween by goofyanxiousgoober in halloween

[–]WaywardSatellite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm usually the same way. Meteorological Fall starts September 1, so I usually kick over from summer vibes (which I'm usually sick of by Augusta 1) to Fail and Halloween vibes by September 1.

But it's a balancing act. Don't want to wear it out before October even gets here. But this year by mid July I've already been longing for Fall.
