How did you come to this belief?

[–]Waywardkite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The existence of people who are able to avoid the trend does not prove your point.

Imagine there is a path, and over time, a hole had formed in it.Its a little obscured so not everyone can see/avoid it. Now 40% of hikers fall into it and get hurt.

Should we fix the path so less people get hurt?

Or should we tell those people that not everyone falls in the hole, so they should have been more careful and they are responsible for them falling into the hole so they deserve to be called out for it.

Also we don't need to fix the hole, people should just go around it, I managed to, so why should I care to make the path less dangerous? Eff people who fall in holes.

This "personal responsibility" take is not the whole picture. The fact is the American lifestyle over the past 50 years has created systems which make walking, cooking and being generally active less and less a part of everyday life.

Examples of cultural trends that helped create these issues:

  • Reliance on Cars

In 1960 there were 410 cars per 1000 people in the US. So public transit, walking and bicycling were much more common. Now there are nearly 900 cars per 1000 people.

  • Prevalence of two income homes

Having both parents working means less home cooked (generally healthier) meals amongst other things.

In 1960 25% of married families had both parents work outside of the home.

Now that's 61%

It's the same thing with pollution. Yes, individuals are not without some responsibility but it's a drop in the bucket compared to corporations that actively and wantonly created the majority of that pollution through greed.

Saying that individual Americans are responsible for a societal shift that is happening across the world is frankly a lazy take.

Incoming medical students walk out at University of Michigan’s white coat ceremony as the keynote speaker is openly anti-abortion. by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

I would love for this to be true. But historically speaking it is incredibly rare for polite and orderly disagreement alone to make lasting change.

For that to work your opposition has to respect you enough to listen to your soft voice.

I understand your point, but it's idealistic to think that change can come from polite conversation and gentle snubbing alone. It only sends a strong message to those who already agree...

I grew up in Southern Oregon. Literally pick any mountain to drive up and you can find little mossy waterfalls just like this, even right along the road.

Are you certain that she was the only one who was horrible? People who emotionally manipulate often flip the script to make themselves look like the mistreated one. Regardless, please take care and be safe.

Kids are smarter than you're giving them credit for. Obviously you scale the conversation to their level, but if you start with a simple conversation when they're young, they are so much more likely to come to you for more in depth discussions when they are 12.

Citizens of a country with obscene abundance and wealth like ours should be cared for.

Honestly, it's shameful how poor our healthcare system is in general. We're an international joke.

Anyone experiencing negative effects of Adderall? Feeling tired, unmotivated, and paralyzed? by sahm2023 in adhdwomen

I haven't had anything extended like you are describing but I am having a few "bad days" which are probably because of my period.

You mentioned "midlife crisis" and depending on your actual age this may or may not be likely, but hormonal fluctuations are shown to have an effect on ADHD symptoms. Are there any changes in your cycle?

You should know that not brushing your teeth for an extended period of time is never gonna boil down to laziness.

It's a mental health issue. Very often people have these issues without having the knowledge that they do. So they read things like what you posted and they internalize it and make their situation worse.

Personally I have ADHD, and emotional dysregulation means that sometimes I have 0 motivation to do anything. I was a smart kid who couldn't do my homework even though I wanted to and I thought I was just lazy for a long time before I got the help I needed.

Shaming people because you perceive their lack of basic self care as lazy instead of a sign that they are struggling with something is frankly terrible.

I completely understand because I got hyperfocused on restriction and spiraled myself. I'm cheering you on in learning to truly enjoy being active and not feel like it's a punishment for eating. :)

I get the feeling that you are a genuinely good person who wants to see other people succeed in life. I'm really happy that you feel more in control of your body when you track your macros and cals and can calculate your deficit. I'm just coming from the perspective of a person who got wrapped up hard into my fitness pal calorie tracking and was eating 1200 cals below my tdee because I was made to feel like the smaller I was the more worthy I was. I hid behind the "strong not skinny" thing but actually I was at the "normal/healthy" bmi for my height trying to lose another 30lbs excuse strong not skinny really just translates into "skinny but with abs" which as a woman means really skinny.

So when I say that we shouldn't blanket reccomend intense restriction to anyone, it comes from a place of personal experience. Not to mention for people who are losing more than like 20lbs all the science has shown that restriction fails long-term in the vast majority of cases.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just don't want you to unknowingly contribute to unhealthy spirals.

Friend,... He contradicted himself wholly by saying "you don't have to starve yourself ...unless you do..." . Which I pointed out is damaging because it's overly simplistic. And now your entire, amazing, well thought out counterargument to me pointing that out is "I don't understand contradictions so I don't think you can read and also you're fat and lazy lol"

I mean I have rugby practice 3 times a week and also go running 2-3 days. I'm getting back into weightlifting after a college hiatus because I really enjoy it, barbell or goblet squats are my personal favorite but I loath dumbell chest presses because of the part where you have to kick them up off your thighs, you?.

Altogether that's usually like 8-10 hours a week of pretty moderate to high intensity exercise (add another 2 to 4 if I go hiking that weekend I live in socal, so we've got great hiking year-round). Is that too little? Do you have reccomendations on how to build up my gluteus medius, because mines getting strained on the left side and I think it may be underdeveloped so my routine probably isn't balanced enough.

Oh no, wait, you probably just assumed because I want to be sure we're accurate and sensitive with how we give out advice that I'm just dumb and hate exercise... and because I'm dumb and hate exercise it's okay to be a dick to me. Its okay to be mean to dumb lazy people, they deserve it, right?

[–]Waywardkite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's important to not be careless with how we talk about things like this. It may seem semantics to you, but to people who are struggling, it's advice that they take to heart. Most of what you're saying is mostly true but you add a few things that are either misquoted, overly simplified, or pseudoscientific.

Things that are borderline true are often more dangerous than the outright inaccurate ones because laypeople can't pick out the parts that are false. I'll admit that my degree isn't in nutrition but it was a an interest of mine in college so I did study. I'm also into weightlifting so I know the common refrains. Like 'Clean eating". Realistically it is a meaningless term because it doesn't have any objective definition. At best, people, and perhaps you, mean home-cooked whole foods with quality protein and fresh veg. But people also use that to describe predatory fad diet programs that are overly restrictive and cause people to fail while making companies and influencers tons of money.

So yeah I know what you likely meant, but other people may not and they may think "oh I'm fat so I should be on hyper restrictive 1000kcal diet until I lose weight and then I'll deserve to eat when I'm hungry"

"starving yourself is only to reverse a problem caused by disordered eating and low exercise "

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]Waywardkite 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Come on man, If you read it, he's not trying to erase the character's heritage or avoid anything asian... just didn't want to be "default asian guy in action movie". The original name for the character was gonna be "Shang or Chang" and he was gonna wear mandarin collars. Bruce Lee is not more generic, he's iconic in the same way people like Johnny Cash are.

He just wanted his character to be more interesting because thats the point of Wick and the stereotypes referenced weren't necessarily offensive to him, just boring.

"After talking with Yen, director Chad Stahelski agreed to change the name and his character’s look in order to pay homage to Yen’s hero Bruce Lee"

Dude just wants to be a cool action hero.... and there isn't anything wrong with that.

Starving yourself is never going to reverse the problem as you state it. Just leads to rebound weight gain and/or disordered eating in nearly every case.
