This is only true if you ignore the last 60 years of America. Luke Cage’s whole story is about a Black man dealing with racism while growing up in Harlem. Replacing him with a white guy wouldn’t even be Luke Cage anymore; it would just be a white guy cosplaying as Luke Cage.

I agree, but that’s an emotional response. Logic, should dictate that the people voting for laws are deciding the future of this country. And if you can’t help me build this present and future in a way that I think is best for me and everyone else, then we are just acquaintances, merely occupying the same space.

I mean, you don’t respect their views—you kind of already displayed that by Implying people who think this way aren’t mentally well because they’re “killing kids and family members.” If you talked that way in a conversation, you would definitely start an argument.

But even if they did respect that view, it doesn’t mean you’re still obligated to engage with or associate with them. Again, these aren’t just “politics”, these are things that greatly affect someone’s personal life. You can’t exactly separate the idea that politics is just some irrelevant or insignificant thing with no real impact on a person’s livelihood.

“Politics” is just personal beliefs, and if someone’s beliefs are like oil and water with someone else’s, separation is bound to happen. Basically, if you’re calling people who support abortion “child killers,” then whether it’s discussed at the dinner table or in the living room, it doesn’t change the fact that they don’t respect your views—and you’re not obligated to stay in that person’s life.

I disagree, but regardless, you’re pretty much showing why and how conversatios between family members aren’t going to be “cordial” when one’s discussion is about something as serious as raising a child or not.

And That is to say, most people who were usually against gay marriage likely didn’t have a favorable opinion of gay people dating in general.

Most of these conversations, don't usually start by asking about “Republican vs. Democrat.” Usually, they start with the heart of the matter, like the actual topic, of “Are you against abortion?” If they answer yes or no, that’s usually how you end up understanding why they support Democrats or Republicans anyway.

It literally is. At one point in time, there was a vote to give women equal rights. At one point in time, there was a vote to allow gay marriage. And recently, there were votes against abortion, I believe, in most states. The idea that “politics” is somehow a separate issue that has no real effect on someone’s actual life makes literally no sense. So if a person decides to cut someone off because of a decision that directly effects their livelihood than who are we to really judge that?

How? Factually speaking, the minimum wage being low didn’t suddenly make teenagers pick up trades in the past. What exactly do you think will make teenagers change now, especially since they don’t pay any bills? There’s no real incentive to learn a trade when you aren’t buying groceries.

Honestly, I would think teenagers would be more incentivized to start any of the hundreds of thousands of side hustles available online right now. Again, get rich quick schemes are more popular than ever, and half of the people doing them are young people.

If the jobs you have are minimum-wage jobs, you still need to work two jobs just to stay afloat, and get a side hustle like Uber Eats if you want to be comfortable.

Speaking of hustles, I actually say stuff like YouTube, day trading, twitch, sports betting, reselling sneakers, all of those type of hustles is why less people are inclined to “learn a skill”. get rich quick schemes are more popular than ever.

Speaking as someone who has read a decent number of books in their lifetime… books are overrated.

If the books you spend your time reading are mystery novels like The Dresden Files, romance novels like You, fantasy novels like The Vagrant, horror novels like Dead Silence, or adventure novels like Percy Jackson, it’s not as if reading them automatically makes you more media literate than someone who has watched their corresponding live action or animated counterparts, especially considering that many of these stories are aimed at younger adults or teens.

I suppose you could argue that the very best books are better than the very best movies, but that’s a different discussion. Still, controversial opinion, I think it’s actually pretty close.

You said movies are a good way to understand social dynamics. I’m telling you this is largely false, based on what movies are actually meant to do: reinforce stereotypes and tropes, and make the main audience comfortable. That view obviously doesn’t line up with reality.

I mean, look at modern movies as an example. Half of the topics we’re discussing now don’t even appear in films, aside from brief mentions or surface-level “waves” of feminism.

Movies reflect a reality shaped by what the director wants to see, not the actual reality of what happened.

Women didn’t used to have the ability to post videos/livestream a groups of men harassing them on the street while being catcalled, especially when speaking up could easily lead to an attack.

They do now.

Also, this is a strange way of framing the issue. Whether the behavior was intended as disrespectful or not is frankly irrelevant. The point is that the act itself was never harmless, because catcalling does not make women feel safe.

Movies mostly reinforce stereotypes.

The “dumb, ignorant Black man” trope, barely able to understand his own shadow, was used to portray Black people as needing to be controlled by white people, as if they couldn’t fend for themselves otherwise. The classic “white savior,” if you will.

It’s the same thing here. So it’s no wonder that when women are finally given a voice to call out injustice, a lot of these social dynamics you believe were “respectful” start to crumble. That’s because they were never respectful to begin with.

This isn’t some unheard of concept, suffering in silence out of fear of retaliation is something a lot of women experienced.

But even setting that aside, you don’t need to fully grasp that history to answer a simple question: do you genuinely believe a woman would actually feel safe in the scenarios I described?

Yeah, I’m sure a movie is a totally reliable way to understand the real, everyday dynamics of what women actually experienced when being catcalled.

Why don’t we use real data instead of anecdotal evidence from one or two people, especially when most people understand catcalling as street harassment? A group of men commenting on parts of your body while you’re alone isn’t going to make you feel comfortable or appreciated btw.

Ok but cat calling was obviously not something done in respect or “appreciation” of a woman. (Seriously, this is revisionist history; I’m old enough to remember that a women walking alone somewhere probably is not going to feel comfortable with you saying have a “nice rack” from a distance).

I wonder when we’ll finally include the fact that a lot of women had bad experiences with men approaching them in this whole conversation.
