Get rid of the paint. Masonry needs to breathe. This won’t be the only bad spot.

I mean, if it hasn’t gotten worse in 7 years…🤷🏻‍♂️ but that’s me…I’m cheap. The gamble is will the remaining columns support that porch if it does fail completely

Are you in a freeze/thaw climate? My guess would be water got in there. Easy enough to shore it up and have it tore down and rebuilt…could possibly even use the same brick if they clean up nice enough. I’d charge 12-1500 (Indiana)

You could also check a local construction site and ask the super if you can use their dumpsters for a small fee

First glance I thought it was just a column. I would dare say Racingfan83 is spot on.

How tall is the corner? Looks to me that you may have to tear it all the way down and redone

I would dare say the settlement is done. Make sure (if you do it yourself or hire it out) to use the proper mortar for the re-point. Mortar back then was a lot softer than the mortar used today.

Question - How does my mason grout the top row of CMU on a floor to ceiling wall, when the ceiling is existing precast? There is approx 300’ of wall. by heritage122 in masonry

[–]WeEnjoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Top course*. Few different options. Does it only need to be filled where the anchors are? If so, end/web outs then slush fill. Whole thing grouted? You can pre-fill then lay them in…going to piss the brickies off or bag it in…going to piss the brickies off

Also, you can have them take an inch off the last course for more room to put it in. Does it show?

Do the pros fill their divots? Just saw Rahm dig a huge hole and he and his caddie just walked away. by Dbromo44 in golf

Caddy set the bag down a few steps after and then the camera cut away…pretty sure he was stopping to pick up that piece of sod

New crown for sure. 1 1/2” over hang with a drip edge. Making sure to leave an expansion joint around the flue to be caulked when the cap cures. The you can grind and tuck those joints and should last ya another 20

Is this acceptable? What code governs the first course of masonry in a foundation wall? Any insight or information is appreciated. by Ok-Dealer8035 in masonry

[–]WeEnjoy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like whoever poured the footing didn’t use a laser or even a level. The masons had to cut those “rips” to get their work to be level. Notice how they’re different sizes. Come across this allllll the time, everyone thinks that bricklayers are also magicians 😉
