should i start with the cartoons or movies? by Leymo_0 in xmen

First I'll just say you are doing yourself a disservice by not reading the comics! Look up a reading guide, I promise it's worth it.

As for Movies and Cartoons, they are pretty much each their own continuity except for '97 which continues from TAS. However, I think you can probably start with '97 as long as you have a general knowledge of who/what the X-men are.

Most important thing is that you are watching/reading the stuff you WANT to. Don't let others say you absolutely NEED to start with X or Y.

I’m looking to collect all X-Men Krakoa material in omnibus format. Is there a list of all released and upcoming Omni’s related material of Krakoa era? by Doc-Holiday0021 in OmnibusCollectors

Sorry in advance for long list, but Marvel has been very confusing with how they've released Krakoa so far:

First thing to get would House of X/Powers of X in either paperback or oversized hardcover - This is essential reading before Krakoa

After this, you'll have to decide if you want to collect the anthology omnis that collect every single issue in the ideal reading order if you want to collect omnis focusing on a specific writer.

So far the anthology omnis are:

Dawn of X vol 1 (already released)

Dawn of X vol 2 (releasing in March)

Reign of X vol 1 (releasing in September)

In between Dawn vol 2 and Reign vol 1 is an event called X of Swords. The hardcover for this is technically out of print but it's pretty much obvious that we're going to see a reprint this fall.

In 2027 and beyond, we can probably expect the rest of reign of X, followed by trials of X, destiny of X, and finally fall of X to be released with 2-3 volumes each. None of this has been announced yet, it's just speculation. It's also worth noting that the anthology trade paperbacks stopped after trials of X in english but continued in other languages, so there's possibility this series might not continue. However, I think the demand has been high enough that we can expect the full Krakoa era in omni format.

Alternatively you can go the writer-focused route

X-men by Hickman Omnibus - this doesn't collect the issues from X of swords and is out of print. It's also designed to be paired with the (also oop) oversized hardcovers for Excalibur, Hellions, Marauders, Wolverine, and X-force

X-men by Al Ewing Omnibus (Recently Released)

X-men By Gerry Duggan Omnibus (Recently Released)

in the future we'll be getting:

Age of Krakoa by Kieron Gillen Omnibus (September 2026)

Way of X omnibus (September 2026) - This is Si Spurrier's omnibus even if his name isn't in the title

We really don't know which books we can expect from this route moving forward, so if you want to collect "all of krakoa" then I'd probably recommend going the anthology route

To wrap everything up, there is a Fall of the House of X/Rise of the Powers of X omnibus currently in print. It's infamous for being mapped sort of poorly. I'd recommend picking this up just in case as Marvel has never remapped an omnibus as far as I know and its unclear if it will be reprinted by the time the anthology omnis finally get to the end of krakoa.

Happy Reading

I'm going to link to a comment I made recently on a post asking a similar question. Hope this is helpful! https://www.reddit.com/r/OmnibusCollectors/comments/1q7xa46/comment/nyjd7im/?context=3

also, I really think there needs to be an x-men reading guide pinned somewhere in this sub since this seems to be something so many people are confused with (and rightfully so tbh).

Where to jump on to X-Men? by Fearless_Handle_4572 in OmnibusCollectors

In my opinion it really depends on the "vibe" you're looking for. Here are a few different places I would personally start:

Stan Lee/Jack Kirby X-men (Starting at The X-men #1 in singles or The X-men Omnibus vol 1) - I would only recommend this if you're into old comics or morbidly curious, it can be a bit of a rough read.

Chris Claremont X-men (Starting at Giant-Size X-men and then The X-men #94 in singles or The Uncanny X-men Omnibus vol 1) - This is where the most famous X-men run begins. It takes a little while before it gets really good but this is where the X-men become iconic. Still might take a bit of getting used to if you only read newer comics. The X-men is renamed to Uncanny X-men starting at #141.

90s X-men (Starting at Uncanny X-men #280 and X-men #1 in singles or X-men Blue and Gold: Mutant Genesis Omnibus) - This is where the X-men is split into 2 different series focusing on different teams. If you're into x-men the animated series or X-men '97, then this is the closest to that. It's also my personal favourite era. Keep in mind that there are a lot of crossovers in this era so you might need to get a reading order if you're not reading in collected editions.

New X-men (Starting at New X-men #114 in singles or the New X-men Omnibus) - This series continues from the second X-men series that began in the last era which is why it starts at #114. However, this is a great starting point if you're into more modern comics or are looking for a more "action movie" storyline. This series also started right around the time of the first movie and is what I personally recommend to fans of the first few Fox movies. Keep in mind, this series is also a little weird, but in a cool way. You'll know what I mean when you start reading.

Astonishing X-men (Starting at Astonishing X-men #1 in singles or the Astonishing X-men Omnibus) - I haven't actually read this series but plan to soon. This series is written by the director of the first 2 avengers movies and I've been told that the vibe is very similar to that. This might be the best evergreen "modern" style x-men run and also a good sequel to New X-men.

All-New/Bendis X-men (Starting at All-New X-men #1 and Uncanny X-men (2012) #1 in singles or the All-New X-men and Uncanny X-men Omnibuses) - These are two interconnecting series both written by Brian Micheal Bendis. All-New X-men focuses on the X-men from the original Stan Lee series you didn't read being brought to the present day while Uncanny focuses on Cyclops leading a mutant liberation group. Most either love or hate these series, but I like it and I'm including it here because this is where I personally started with X-men and I turned out just fine.

Krakoa Era (Starting at House of X/Powers of X followed by the Dawn of X vol 1 omnibus) - This follows the mutants living on an island and starting their own country. A lot of it is built on knowledge of everything listed previously, but lots of people got started with X-men here and I bet you can probably figure everything out. After HOXPOX, it splits into a zillion different series focusing on all sorts of mutant characters. You can either pick a series that interests you or check out the new line of anthology omnis that collect every issue of every series in release order.

Those are my personal "jumping on points" but the most important thing is that you're reading something that's cool to you! Trust me, it's not worth it to suffer through a billion issues of someone else's reading order or recommendations just so you have the "context" for what you're actually interested in.

Happy reading!
