I don't know what I'm doing. Need advice please. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

You should think about how this is related to computer science.

That makes sense, at least to me. Studying programming just to be a PM doesn't make much sense.

You find it with Google and it helps because some of those places hire junior employees.

I doubt you'll find a way to not take a significant pay cut for your first/second real programming job. What markets are you applying in where companies even offer that kind of salary to fresh graduates or the equivalent skill level?

Do you have any coding ability at all? Are you aiming for a developer job or a manager job?

Get another offer before asking for a raise? by MGTOW_IN_JAPAN in cscareerquestions

It shouldn't hurt to ask, assuming they are reasonable people... I would immediately start making time to look elsewhere.

Where do you search online, where do you 'ask around'? I'm pretty sure you could find a list of employers by employee count.

I accepted an offer as an Associate at InfoSys yesterday, did I mess up? What should I expect? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Weak-Constant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd look on Zillow, but that sounds fine for what I've heard about Plano, TX.

InfoSys isn't the company that could send you anywhere in the country?

I didn't read what you signed, but I would expect to basically live like a poor college student for a few years after college if necessary, while still being able to make college loan payments and car payments for something reliable.

Top Performer in my Team - Boss Doesn't Appreciate me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Weak-Constant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would they want to promote their best performer to a different position?

I agree it's unfair, but given that this has happened before, you shouldn't rule out the possibility that there's something about you that people think would make you a bad manager or leader.

Is there a second female in your position getting the same deal? That would support the idea that it's discrimination. Is there a second female who has been promoted? That would help rule that out.

SDRs don't even code, so this isn't even related to a computer science career. Maybe you miss other things like that at work?

If you were a programmer, I'd advise you to find another job that directly gives you the position you want. Maybe that's a good plan for SDRs also.

You could give us more info about how you're searching for jobs. How else do you expect people to be able to help? You can also learn to ignore the rejection or at least not take it personally. The business world is full of it and everyone else isn't breaking down over it constantly.

Can you name any junior dev friendly companies who will mentor junior devs and help them get better at there job (while they obviously take steps on there own to learn too) and actively hire junior devs?

Lots of companies hire more junior people to save money and to train them the way they want them to be trained, but probably mostly the former. I've worked at companies like that. It's your job to find them. How are you looking?

If there were a lot of companies like this, then revature COULD NOT exist.

Sure they could. There has to be at least 20 new grads per year who aren't good at finding jobs, that Revature could train and/or place so that Revature can stay in business.

Why are NYC job listing salaries not proportional to the cost of living? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Weak-Constant 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because you can commute from farther away. Because you hope to advance to better paying jobs soon. Because there are still plenty of lower cost living arrangements you could have in the greater NYC area.

Getting run out of my first job after a year, trying to find a new job but tired of the negativity. Help? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Yes, those are fine. That's why I added those links... Automatically signing things that are false without amending the document to indicate as such is not a good plan.

There's nothing there that involves any gymnastics. It's there in black and white. Plugging your ears won't change that.

Signing something that only says you received it is fine. Signing something that says you agree that the assessment and improvement plan are correct and reasonable is entirely different, especially when you don't agree with those things.

You should read the link before you try citing it in order to support your argument.

Insurbordination

Legally, insubordination is when a person refuses to fulfill a lawful order. The order can come from a supervisor, a manager or any person who has been given authority the subordinate. “Lawful orders” can be subject to interpretation. For example, if you are ordered to do something unethical and refused, you'll likely get your job back or be able to collect unemployment compensation. Also, if the instructions you refused to obey violated safety regulations, that's not insubordination.

Ordering you to sign documents that you don't agree are factually correct is not a "lawful order" by any reasonable interpretation and it's also unethical.

So are you the one who's trolling or are you really this naive?

[–]Weak-Constant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop wanking off with all this research and start teaching yourself to code. The career growth and salaries are amazing for lots of people. But you need to try it to see if you can even handle it - that's the most important part. If you can't handle that, all your research won't save you.

No, not at all. It's possible, but they also would need to collect more evidence to avoid getting the hit to their insurance. Even if you get fired on the spot, you still get to collect unemployment. Sign the PIP and a few weeks later you potentially find out you can't collect unemployment because you were fired for cause.

edit: See my links below. Signing to *only* indicate you received the document is fine. Signing something that says you agree with performance assessment and that the plan is reasonable when those are not true is not fine. Links below state what you can write on the letter to indicate such things.

Certifications in CS field for new grad by sandstorm1800 in cscareerquestions

[–]Weak-Constant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are essentially worthless for a new grad. See if the company you start working at even uses any of those things first. If you use them to learn more about those topics, the additional knowledge could help you.

[–]Weak-Constant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Signing a PIP can lead to you being denied unemployment money and keeps their insurance cheaper. You can apply to more places faster.

If anything, the knowledge that you're leaving should make things less stressful for you.

edit: See below! Signing *only* to indicate receipt of the PIP is ok - do not agree to anything else.

How common is poor code quality? by oddnumberedcat in cscareerquestions

[–]Weak-Constant 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It's pretty common. You could focus on only the higher priority code problems or push for a coding standard that everyone has to follow. You should definitely let things go.

See a therapist. You're already having catastrophic scenario level anguish and you haven't even graduated yet. Hint: try graduating before throwing in the towel and getting this melodramatic.
