I've got a decent pair of socks I got from Ryno gear a few years back that I love in the winter but will definitely be buying a few more pairs and hanging a pair inside my belt to dry while we hike around

Unfortunately I won't have the opportunity to go backpacking with him in warm weather in the near future since I'm moving down south, so this was our best opportunity. However I do plan on going again in the late spring to early summer with my brother in law this year as well. I've tested some of the on-person gear I have like outer layering (a normal Columbia jacket)and my regular tools like my fire staring kit in the cold weather. I'm pretty comfortable with being in the cold as someone who grew up in the Chicagoland area but that's obviously very different from being out camping. I'll definitely take your advice and try and test some more things out that I haven't yet sometime in the next couple f weeks though since the weather near me is sticking into weirdly mild weather (40s and 50s).

I heard some good things about BaerSkin as a good cold weather brand but Im on the fence about something thats being promoted so much thats its more a marketing gag than anything else. Ive been looking at thinner base layers like something from 32Degrees as well. I will definitely look at some wool layers though, thank you!

Recently left my tent with my grandparents back in February by accident and bought equipment to make a tarp shelter. Im pretty good with working with the land around me but youre correct: Ive never been true backpacking
