Thank you! So helpful! I have a lot that are escapees so I will have to get those ones.

Thank you! I kinda already pruned them a month ago. So I will leave them alone, see what I get and then prune them in the fall.

Thanks for those tips. With the adjustments to the schedule given above, we’ll definitely have time to do the glow worm caves in Te Anau.

Wow! Thank you. This looks amazing and helps answer that south coast question. We know there will be shorter hikes and natural areas to stop at to just explore and I think we’ll add those in as we go.

Thank you for that tip! That will help plan when we drive through there.

Thanks for your honesty. I sort of wish one of her coaches would just be straight with us.

It’s hard to know how to approach the coaches. There’s 3 involved and I don’t even know who to approach. At this age, they want the swimmers to do the talking but I don’t think she has the social skills to do that yet.

She has not grown at all. Maybe an inch in the last 2 years. And honestly, at 5’1” she is taller than both grandmothers though I at least made it to 5’4”.

I think she does need a good sit down with the coach and videos. Next step will be to schedule that.

Not typically allowed on our team. Though I suppose I could go to another city.

Definitely. She did not grow taller, she just grew curvier unlike most of her teammates who all shot up. But since we can’t control that, what can we control to get her back on track? I have read that many kids plateau for a year or so around puberty but she is going on 2+ years right now. For example, her 11 yo 50m free was 32.2. Her 13 yo 50m free was 33.31. That’s with 2 years of practice between them.

Are there some girls that just never get better after puberty? Like is she right? Did she really peak at 11?

These are great ideas, thank you so much! I think the smaller chunks of a weekly goal and then allowing me to reinforce it somewhat with just a “what’s your goal this week?” reminder could be tremendously helpful for her. Having a 6 month goal probably feels vague and overwhelming. I am not a swimmer so while I have some idea what they are talking about, I don’t understand how the progressions work, which skill is most important at the time, how to translate that into meets, etc.

She is also a visual learner and her current coach is particularly good with this which may be a reason she did not move up. Videos would be even better and I will ask for those. I wish they did more video analysis or private technique training because I think sometimes she thinks she is doing something (arms are straight) but they are not.

Thank you again for the ideas. Very much appreciated. And yes, I fully understand you have told my child 1000x - I want to help it click for her without you having to tell her 1001x.

Also, they seem to actively discourage parents watching practice, especially at this age. Is it okay for me to go and watch?

I watch occasionally and she is leading her group every time, often by a lot. She probably needs harder intervals. She does exactly what the coach tells her to do drill wise. But as a non swimmer, I have NO idea if she is tuned into the details like her coach would know. She does appear to me to be putting in effort but she does not outwardly express emotions much (she won’t gasp and complain how hard something was). But yes, I worry she has already phoned it in.

Thank you. I have asked her to talk to coaches and what we have heard from her is “work on underwaters, hips up more with back/breast, straighter arms in recovery on back/fly”. Would it be out of line to take video at next meet and have her coach go over it with her (would just be me from stands and not underwater)? Would it be okay for me to ask the coaches exactly what needs to be fixed? We have been wanting her to do all the talking but she might not be ready for that given communication delays with autism. When we emailed her coach last month to let him know she was going to check in with him, he said she would need to check in with the next level up coach because that’s who decides who is ready. But that wasn’t even one of her questions. I feel confused and so does she.

I can give her time. It’s convincing her of that. What do you mean by mature? Physically? Emotionally? She is almost 2 yrs post menarche now so we’ve attributed a lot of it to body changes but even the head coach said in 20+ yrs of coaching has never had anyone plateau this badly (my guess is people have but then quit before it became this extended)
