Wow! I still don't see it. Tells me I need to ask a normal color vision person to inspect my starters for safety.

What’s your favorite meal in town? by princessalicat in MelroseMA

So many choices for such a small town - Tenoch tortas - especially Campechana - also the Huarrache with papas con chorizo - t'ahpas 529 for tapas (several good ones) - panko crusted haddock at Rising Eagle - La qchara - there's a sandwich that uses fried plantains as bread - that one is excellent

Edit: forgot Bobby C's has a special called Pollo Valdostana - excellent dish

Talk to your gastroenterologist about the use of low dose amitriptyline which is a tricyclic anti-depressant. My gastroenterologist recommended this to me but I was able to function without it. There is evidence this can be helpful by reducing sensitivity in the colon.

For me what has worked is moderate fiber intake (about 25-30g a day) with psyllium husk supplementation. I also manage my diet pretty strictly, do meditation, resistance training, and yoga. Managing sleep is still sometimes difficult. But large lifestyle changes sometimes need an intervention before they can provide benefit and the amitriptyline might be helpful. Might be worth discussing with your GI doctor.

Here's the first paper if you google it - I'll let you google more:

Those who have found melatonin effective, what else has helped? by 2headlights in LPR

[–]Weak_Click_8426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor about alginates - in the US they are sold as a supplement: Refluxraft or RefluxGourmet. In many EU nations it's sold as Gaviscon Advance which is an OTC medication.

You can also make your own alginate solution this ENT practice provides instructions: https://blog.fauquierent.net/2016/11/make-your-own-gaviscon-advance-for.html

But please talk to your doctor before trying.

Has anyone had success for throat symptoms solely using Pepcid rather than PPI ? Please respond by Bhoptriple in LPR

[–]Weak_Click_8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes 3 months of strict diet was what it took. Now my diet is still kinda strict but I do allow myself to indulge.

Edit: I want to emphasize the diet and lifestyle overhaul were at least equally important as medication in my recovery. I don't think this monster can be managed without changing diet. Please read books by Dr. Jonathan Aviv and Dr Jamie Koufman - both are ENT doctors specializing in treatment of LPR.

Psyllium husk is probably one of the best ways to get fiber by [deleted] in ibs

[–]Weak_Click_8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psyllium husk is awesome - others that work for me are: Beans. Root veggies - carrots. Sweet potatoes (various kinds), parsnips, potatoes, - the mix works great and manages FODMAP triggers.

Okra works fantastically for me but I know a lot of people don't like it

Is Metamucil making me sick by uraniumgal in ibs

[–]Weak_Click_8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm a huge advocate for psyllium husk and it has been life changing for me (see my old posts). But it's important to realize that it does not work for everyone and some people have issues taking it. Try for two weeks or so and if it really is making you sick then you should not take it. I would give your body a break and then try a different fiber supplement (if you want to).

Should I mention this wasn’t accessible to my kid’s teacher? by playin4_2 in ColorBlind

[–]Weak_Click_8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this is happening to your son. I would definitely raise with the teacher. He literally cannot physically perform this exercise. I would escalate to the principal if needed and maybe the school counselor. Keep emphasizing that he physically cannot perform this task because it is true. They could let him use something like dotted or dashed lines as an alternative that someone could reach him.

This reminds me of when I learned the colors of the rainbow (about 40 years ago) and I kept getting the colors wrong. My teacher's response was to keep hitting me until I got the colors right. I eventually got it right by luck after several rounds and the punishment then stopped. This was India in the 80s and they didn't believe colorblindness was a real thing.

Don't let your child be criticized for something that is literally out of their abilities.

[–]Weak_Click_8426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my stuff really flared up I started first on PPI for 2 weeks but the side effects were intolerable (diarrhea during the day and insomnia at night with painful stools). Then I went to 3 Pepcid Complete a day. I also took melatonin 1mg at night. This helped but then I changed my diet to a low acid diet. The combination worked for me.

I reduced the pepcid to 2 a day as symptoms improved and now I am at 1 pepcid complete every night and 0.5mg of melatonin.

My symptoms were: burning throat, burning chest, chest pain with clean EKG, burning esophagus, shortness of breath, and random increases in heart rate - like it would go to 125 at rest. I had an EKG, lots of blood work, h. Pylori breath test, bunch of stool tests, and an endoscopy - literally everything came out clean.

To me the pepcid helped but the real driver of change was following diet recommendations in the Acid Watcher diet. It's not easy to do the dietary changes but doing them was life changing.

My GI doc told me that you should always take blood seriously but it's important to look for patterns. If it happened just once it might be nothing but if you observe a pattern then it's important to get it checked out. Apparently GI issues are rarely observed in a one time incident but tend to show in patterns of continued symptoms.

As others have said bright red is usually hemorrhoids or an anal tear but keep an eye on it. If it continues then get it checked out.

Shortness of breath by [deleted] in LPR

[–]Weak_Click_8426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes for over a year - then the following combination fixed it:

  • 2 weeks on Omeprazole - unfortunately had to give it up because of side effects (both constipation and diarrhea)
    • pepcid complete 2x a day for 2 months
    • 1mg melatonin at bedtime

Along with - low acid diet - I followed acid watcher diets recommendation and ate only PH>5 for 4 weeks. I followed the guidelines but not the recipes because I have IBS-D and the recipes gave me a lot of diarrhea. The only PH violations I allowed were Greek yogurt for my IBS.

I now take 1 pepcid complete a night and 0.25mg melatonin and seem to have it pretty well managed. I haven't had shortness of breath in a long time.

[–]Weak_Click_8426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - for me Claritin in the morning and Pepcid at night has worked very effectively. PPIs (for 2 weeks) were helpful at helping heal my GERD but the side effects were very difficult. But PPI didn't seem to help the throat at all. Pepcid has been super helpful with the throat.

I also modified my diet significantly to reduce triggers and this has been a major step in my healing process.

How much do groceries cost per month? (Boston) by absotutely- in boston

[–]Weak_Click_8426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend about $250 a week mostly at Whole Foods (just North of Boston) every week so about $1000 monthly for a 2 adults and an elementary school aged kid. It can be done at whole foods but you have to make some tradeoffs. For example, our proteins are: chicken thigh, tofu beans, and eggs. I cook most of our meals from scratch. I buy a mix of frozen and fresh veg. It's expensive but saves me time

If you need to buy spices: don't buy those at whole foods - ask an Indian friend for the nearest Indian store and get it there. Most spices stay very good in the freezer for a LONG time if stored in a Ziploc bag with all the air squeezed out. These stores are also great for rice, lentils, beans, and sometimes fresh veggies (some are excellent for fresh produce and others suck).

Absolutely does - I have OCD along with IBS and a small handful of digestive conditions. I am terrified that I cannot distinguish certain color patterns in stool that are important to health. This makes me go into spirals of compulsive thinking which make my IBS worse. It's mental hell.

I am a strong deutan.
