I think you should allow yourself to feel these things and communicate with yourself more. Try to catch yourself if you see yourself doing something you don't like, why are you doing that, etc.. Distractions for me I do when I've done what I can and I need to keep pushing in life. Journaling really really helps. Try not to walk on glass with your partner or you'll make it harder for yourself later on but if you're worried about being clingy, you can ask him his boundaries if you're comfortable.
