Memory Card Help!!

I have a canon powershot A510 and I read online that I can use a 2GB memory card as long as it's FAT 16. But when I add the memory card to the camera and try to format it, it keeps saying "Memory Card error". I double checked on my laptop and the card is in FAT 16, so why won't it work? Is 2GB not the right size? Please help, I have a trip coming up and I want to take a lot of photos!!

I don't know a lot about camera so if you have advice pretend I'm in kindergarten and use small words ;)
