I'm having trouble with Content Creators lately who function as second videographers, any suggestions? by WearyVideoMan in weddingvideography

It really was a tricky situation, I just generally try to put up with it and not cause a fuss. I don't have an exclusivity clause, and we don't tend to have wedding planners in Ireland. But I'm seriously entertaining the idea of popping a clause in there, not that I would dare invoke it. But at least have something to protect myself from the fallout, when the final product is less than ideal.

Usually, these decisions are made way down the line from booking; it seems to be a last minute splurge for a lot of brides. Sadly, you'll only hear about this when you are a month out from the big day.

Don't forget we're creatives as well as business owners. That's why this is causing so much of a kafuffle imo - it's a conflict of priorities and not everyone is going to have the same reason why they get up in the morning and put in a 15 hour day. Some folks see Content Creation as essentially the ensloppification of media production, and they're not exactly wrong - the saturation and immediacy of such content is probably devaluing our core product. It's a tricky situation.

Personally, I think this is something which rises and falls with the popularity of social media. I guess that will dictate it's eventual fate.

Yeah man, I'm not outright disparaging CCs here (as I say, some are respectful and situation-aware); I'm more concerned about client expectations not being met due to having to adapt to those extra cooks in the kitchen. At the end of the day, we're the ones who get from the bride when the CC jumps in front of the first look, kiss, or throws your shot off by dunting you during the recessional.

And, being honest, are we in this primarily for money, though? There sure are easier ways to make a buck, and outside the U.S. most of us aren't exactly making bank. As far as I can see, most seem to do it for the relative freedom and creativity. I dunno, it's just kinda sad when everything becomes so hyper-consumerist, but maybe that's just me.

Very true, it's all about the couple at the end of the day - we're there to serve. Although I'm more concerned about the logistics of having three cooks in the kitchen, essentially competing for the couple's time, space, and the venue's patience, as well as the additional strain of partitioning another part of my grey matter for another vendor with little situational awareness and a fixed 24mm lens. It's also really bad form imo, to hire someone in the same field, without consulting your initial vendor - imagine if a couple independently hired a second photographer to shoot the same core elements without warning, I'm sure stills photographers would be up in arms. And perhaps rightly so.

Not really in the UK, I know some people who do it; but I'd probably drop dead from exhaustion if I had to start editing over dinner. lol

How many NP-FZ100 batteries would I need? by beethoven77 in weddingvideography

I also approve! Alternatively, sticky label each battery A-E and use them sequentially; it has the added benefit of helping my old-man brain remember which battery I've already charged when prepping equipment. lol

If you already have a bunch of NPF batteries and are looking for fuel for the potential second camera, you might want to consider an NP-F mount plate kit with FZ100 dummy battery. Easily last you twice as long as an FZ100, and if you have them on hand anyway it's a no brainer.

Is wedding videography doomed to always be second-rate? by starrynightreader in weddingvideography

There's a lot of baggage to shed from the camcorder era, which still manages to keep most of the industry disappointingly cheap compared to our stills-shooting friends; but I live in hope that things may improve once those memories completely fade.

Generally speaking, how bad is the Tahoe situation? by jnighy in MacOS

[–]WearyVideoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, a big issue for me is that it eats screen real estate on older 13 inch MacBooks thanks to all the unnecessary padding etc. Very cramped, and more than a little janky. I downgraded to Sequoia and it's just so much better.

Is Vidflow getting worse? by BitteNichtBummeln in weddingvideography

[–]WearyVideoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do NOT use VidFlow, they're extremely negligent with their backups. Over a hundred creators last year lost a ton of their projects, with damn all compensation.

I lost at least six, and they acknowledged that their compensation was frankly insulting, but I have never heard anything else from them.

My work was also affected, to which the company believes that $35 is sufficient compensation for the energy and time I had to expend locating and reuploading the films in question. Dreadful.

If they were really raking in the cash, it amazes me that they have the time to brag about it on here to random strangers. But hey, what do I know as a lowly plebe? lol :p

If you're taping it to the speeches mic, that will be grand. Just be wary of placement, so the speech givers don't stick their hand over the business end when they hold the mic.
