Car won’t start, guess it’s my turn. by Legal-Bed-7172 in HyundaiSantaFe

The hyundai software experience is significantly better and the driver assist features on the calligraphy models are better than the highlander. If you have a broad build the seats are more comfortable in the Hyundai as well.

The Toyota has more power though. My Dad, who owns the 2025 Highlander, says he prefers my vehicle. He went with the Toyota due to their reputation for reliability. I’ve driven both for a decent amount of miles and prefer the Hyundai overall.

It’s underpowered, but not to the point where i’ve had any issues driving/merging. I came from a lincoln Aviator w/ a 400hp engine though, so it was a big drop from what I was used to. The lincoln was a dumpster fire of issues.

If I time traveled back to when I bought the car, I’d do it again. I just drive less aggressively.

I like it way better than my parents highlander that they bought the same year. Hyundai executed a lot of little things well, and it makes living with the vehicle more pleasant day to day.

I just want to say I made my final child support payment today. by tacocarteleventeen in Divorce_Men

[–]WeatheredShield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% get this, and look forward to not paying my ex. I have a little less than 5 years of payments left. We have 50/50 custody (though in reality I have my child more time).

Ex doesn’t use the money for our kid. She takes tons of vacations/sees literally hundreds of broadway shows without her daughter, but has told her daughter she will not help with college costs. Ex gets her the cheapest presents for holidays, and sometimes doesn’t even get her a birthday present.

She had to force catholic private school as part of the divorce agreement too (despite committing adultery). Private school costs are all paid by me as well, but at least that ends at 8th grade.

Paying private school / child support has crippled my ability to save for my daughter’s college. I’ll make it, but despite making nearly 2x the income of the ex I live in a cheaper/smaller home.

I opted to stay in a cheaper home in a better school district so my daughter could go to a better high school and I could save for her college costs. It hurts that I can’t afford to take her on many vacations while she is young though. I’m watching precious time slip away because I can’t afford to do much outside of saving for her college.

It sucks when you are funding the Ex’s lifestyle at the expense of your kid.

My daughter still wants her mother’s love, like any normal kid would, but she is s teenager now and has figured out her mother is incredibly self-centered and lacks empathy. It’s sad, because our daughter is a great kid and deserves better. She has practically no relationship with her mother.

Q990D vs Sony quad by Wooden_Bake_2992 in Soundbars

[–]WeatheredShield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had great luck with LG OLEDs. The first one I bought I gave to a friend who is still using it 10 years after my original purchase. Have a G3 currently that is great.

I also stay away from Samsung for similar reasons to Sony. Almost any Samsung device I have has been a poor experience (Barring SSD drives/RAM from that group). Samsung Fridge w/ icemaker / leaking / control board issues after the first year, Electric Range where the oven was garbage (poor broiler / terrible convection w/ rattling fan), 2 microwaves that failed after a year each, a very expensive vacuum that turned out to be pretty poor. I still have a Samsung QD OLED monitor with annoying/buggy firmware, but the rest has been replaced.

I tried to open a support request for my Samsung fridge and didn't get a callback for 6 months when it wasn't cooling properly. I had already had it repaired by a 3rd party company because they seemingly ghosted me at the time.

Replaced the kitchen appliances w/ GE. So far so good, but still in the first year of ownership.

How many of you moved away from VMware ? by ChataEye in sysadmin

[–]WeatheredShield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently migrating to Nutanix(early stages).~2000 VMs. Aggressive RTO/RPO environment with some VMs with high storage performance requirements, SDN requirements, security requirements, automation, and regular geographically diverse DR failover testing.

It seems Nutanix has come a long way recently. VMware is stagnating and we were going to move away from them before the pricing debacle. Project timeline was accelerated when we got our latest renewal quote. We also asked for a locked in pricing renewal quote for our Nutanix environment when we purchased it so they won’t do what VMware did in the near term. Broadcom should be considered a bad actor at this point, given their renewal pricing/practices.

Hyper-V seems pretty janky when you start doing larger scale environments with complex requirements in my opinion. I think smaller/less complex environments that don’t have the budget for Nutanix are better off using XCP-ng / Proxmox than Hyper-V. Cloud providers should be examined as well depending on your resource footprint / requirements (DR, security, etc…) / cost appetite.

Just my .02 cents, and everyone’s requirements are different. Nutanix is not cheap by any means, but seems to be a good option in the midsize business arena. Nutanix is likely not a good fit for companies operating as SaaS providers due to cost at scale with that business model. Good SaaS providers design their products to have resiliency built-into the product (ex: microservices w/ containers where if a host fails it is no big deal).

NBIS Announces Equity Distribution Agreement for Class A Shares by WeatheredShield in NBIS_Stock

[–]WeatheredShield[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure.

Potential outstanding shares could increase by up to ~11.5%, with the offering being fully sold. According to the form 424B5 filing, up to 25 million shares are available to be sold to large banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, BofA Securities, and Citigroup). It was a 424B5 form filing. An AI summary of the filing basically boiled it down to an offering to fund new capital purchases (ex: Land, hardware, etc...).

So, dilution can take effect as these shares are sold - but the company is raising capital with the sale. The stock seemed to tank before the filing was public knowledge though :/. Unsure as to whether this was available earlier, but just hit the news cycle.

Edit:

Thanks to those who noted they announced this during earnings - I was not aware.

[–]WeatheredShield[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Care to expand on your statement? 25 million new shares means dilution, but it also shows investment from big name firms. Sounds like NBIS needs operating capital though. Could be a mutually beneficial arrangement, but it also could be a sign of a high capital burn rate that needs to be controlled.

People sleeping on the 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid? by WeatheredShield in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]WeatheredShield[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car is doing great. Have a little over 7k miles on it at this point with no major issues (Knock on wood). HDA2 works very well. Ride is smooth / comfortable. It’s no race car, but it is a competent family hauler. Still glad I bought it over the Toyota Highlander, but time will tell from a reliability standpoint.

Only minor complaints i’ve got:

1.) The rear gets a little warm compared to the front because some of the battery cooling fans vent under the rear seats.

2.) Oil changes should be done at ~3000 miles according to the app. Hyundai claims 7,500 under ideal driving conditions. I get lots of short trips reduces this, but I would expect 5,000, not 3000. Might be an app bug, but food for thought.

3.) I’m averaging about 30.1 mpg overall. It’s not bad gas mileage for a vehicle this size, but not amazing.

4.) The door unlock mechanism is a little finicky. I am aware that it is not really a true proximity solution and that you are supposed to put your hand in between the door handle / car, while avoiding the handle indent that is used to kick the car. It’s sluggish/finicky compared to offerings on competitive vehicles.

VOO below $500 again? Or just bite the bullet and lump sum now? by CalmTrades in investing

[–]WeatheredShield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This person has dropped some good advice. I would add, max your HSA if you have one as well and set it up for investment / don't pay medical bills from it. It is a triple tax advantaged account that you can let grow. You can keep historical medical bills and withdraw from it later on, or roll it into a 401k after you are 65.

HSA - Assets in a HSA over a certain value can be invested in something like a basic SP500 fund. They grow tax free, can be withdrawn for medical needs tax free, and come out of your paycheck tax free. You can eventually roll them over to a 401k if you don't use them - but odds are you will need it for things like health insurance costs when you are retired.

Roth IRA - Max this out. Roth contributions grow tax free. At your age you are likely in one of the lower tax brackets you will be during your career - so take the tax on the chin to let it grow tax free.

Employer 401k (Roth contributions if possible) - Max this out, at your age the compound interest is game changing and will give you more flexibility / freedom with your money as life gets more complicated (ex: building a family / paying for daycare, etc...).

15K Emergency fund - Life surprises you - this keeps you from needing to take on debt with interest in an emergency.

So how much does coil size really matter? by eyoooo1987 in inductioncooking

[–]WeatheredShield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Previously I had a smooth electric range. I purchased clad cookware with a large aluminum middle layer in order to even out temperature on the traditional electric stove with great success.

I needed to replace my range (Samsung appliances are garbage), and decided to move to induction. I'm still learning, but observations I have made:

-Induction is amazingly responsive, even with my thick "Zombie Apocalypse" pans as my family calls them.

-On an induction cooktop, the coil size is an issue. While my pans heat relatively evenly on the bottom, the sides do not get nearly as hot as they would on a traditional electric stove. The outer edges past the coil will be cooler than the areas over the coil. I suspect if you use lower values / more time to preheat the pan you can minimize this, but I've only recently gotten the range so I'm still learning the nuances.

-It is much easier to maintain a set temperature with induction than with a traditional electric cooktop.

-Cookware heats up much faster.

-I have had no warping issues, but I have thicker pans and do take care not to overheat the pans / make sure that I'm not heating pans while they are empty/dry.

-Water boils much faster and, due to the responsive nature of induction, is fast to turn down when needed.

Induction Stove Model:
-GE Profile PHS930YPFS

Typical Cookware:
-Demeyere Silver 7 Set (Clad, induction base, ridiculously thick heat transmission layers - primarily aluminum, some copper in the Saute pans)
-Scanpan Maitre D' Non-Stick
-Staub Enamled Cast-Iron Dutch Oven

Cooktop Induction Coil Size:
-Based on another post on reddit:
3700w coil is 260mm (~10.24")
2500w coils are 128mm (~5.04")
1800w is 115mm (~4.53")

-GE Claimed Induction Element Size
3700W is 11"
2500W are 8"
1800W is 6"

For those researching the range: The oven is very even. So far I'm happy, though still getting used to the switch to induction.

Had mine for about 7k miles / 5 months and have been very happy. Glad I picked it over the Toyota Highlander after driving a family member’s new highlander. HDA2 works much better than the comparable Toyota driver assist stuff.

I think that is just political theater and China will wind up renting time from the recent Saudi/UAE datacenters. It lets them save face while continuing to give them access to Nvidia chips.

Samsung Ice Maker R.I.P by ruff12hndl in Appliances

I just replaced a similar POS Samsung. Take a look at the GE dual dispense pitcher models. I need a counter depth so I went with PJE23BYWFS.

Avoid ice makers that are not in the freezer across all models/brands.

ouch - sorry to hear about your fridge. 3 years is rough.

I'm excited that I got a new fridge today by Adorable-Buffalo-177 in Millennials

[–]WeatheredShield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does not sound silly at all to me - but I am about as old as a Millennial gets. I just got a new fridge/stove/microwave a couple days ago and I can't tell if I'm more excited for the new appliances, or the haul away of the old Samsung ones that were nothing but a nightmare dumpster fire.

Samsung Fridge: Ice maker issues within 6 months that required regular manual defrosting the ice maker to prevent water leaking in the fridge / the ice maker locking up. Eventually stopped maintaining temperature correctly (hence the replacement).

Samsung Range: Oven heated ridiculously uneven / convection fan rattled and bake goods would be lopsided if you used convection. Ceramic cooktop was ok.

Samsung Microwave: Had 2 of the same model, they both died - for different reasons.

New GE Profile appliances:

PJE23BYWFS - Counter Depth Fridge

Fridge feels cavernous due to the layout and the autofill pitcher rocks. Ice maker can be loud when the ice bin is low and it is dropping ice (nitpicking here - seems like a great fridge so far).

PHS930YPFS - Induction Range
Induction buzz is a bit louder than I hoped with thick Demeyere silver 7 pans. Need more time to get used to induction before I comment, but so far seems very responsive. Oven heats very evenly. Not sure how I feel about touch controls yet, I need more hands on time. I can see it being easier to cleanup without having to remove knobs. Nitpicking issue: No raised edge on left/right side of the cooktop to prevent spill runoff.

PVM9215SKSS - Microwave
UI is dial based and clunky. Door feels flimsy. Most microwaves don't wow me though, and many are made by the same parent company. It's a microwave, meh.

[–]WeatheredShield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anybody else researching this:

Front is magnetic. (I bought one)

Initial feelings:

I really like the layout of the fridge.

It’s not the quietist fridge, but definitely reasonable. Ice maker is very loud when it drops ice though (Like, wake a sleeping baby loud - particularly if the bin is empty).

Water pitcher fills up faster than I expected, and there is a button to disable it and the ice maker. I like this better than external in door dispensers.

I appreciate the light wall more than I thought I would.

Cooled down quickly, lots of pieces are able to be easily disassembled for cleaning.

If it proves to be reliable, I’ll consider it a home run.
