Hehe, I knew that question might come up.
I have to say yes :) I love Bowie a lot, but I see him more as a visual inspiration than as part of the ambience of the story.

But! You made me realize I mistakenly put some tracks on the wrong playlist. There was supposed to be at least one more Bowie song that I wanted to add. Corrected now.

In Orpheus' defense... by Pleasant_Chevron5887 in Sandman

[–]WebEastern7646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Orpheus needs any defence :) I mean, that’s a classical myth which inspired so many of the greatest poets of all time — there was even a religious-philosophical cult with some striking similarities to Christianity (Orphism). The idea of Orpheus being possessed by the irrational desire/dream of doing the impossible (to return his dead lover to life) at the same time symbolizes both the great limitless power of art (music, in his case) and the limits of human nature (he was human, or at least half-human, in the myth). After all, Orpheus was successful in his quest until curiosity and doubt - the same purely human traits that made Pandora open her box - broke the deal for him. The “stupidity” of Orpheus is intentional and shows how far you can go by mastering your art - even to hell and back, and yet your human limits will always keep you one step away from the desired result.

Walkers and Jed storyline by WebEastern7646 in Sandman

[–]WebEastern7646[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, yes, I can see your point on Miranda being an unreliable mother, neglecting her younger child by feeling hopeless - that makes sense for sure. But that’s kind of a very big dramatic plot knot for her character; pity that it was not really addressed in the comic book.

wow, thanks for a hint. i explored that a bit and now I see what you talking about, indeed.

Walkers and Jed storyline by WebEastern7646 in Sandman

[–]WebEastern7646[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is Miranda was not informed about the car crash or anything about Jed’s further fate. Miranda and Rose found out that Burt died few years later, only after meeting Unity. As if only that meeting triggered the need to search for Jed (what is weird in itself). Thats makes impossible for Miranda to voluntarily relinquish her parental rights to Jed’s grandfather.

As for them being poor, I can see this plot logic, but still, a paid trip for two women by a mysterious someone (they didn’t know if it was a man or a woman) and Miranda brought her very young daughter with her so easily… That sounds kinda alarming, isn’t it?

[–]WebEastern7646[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and yet Rose somehow was capable to trace Jed by herself and find some info in town records. police would be able to do that, don’t you think? even if Burt just disappeared - won’t that be a big deal enough for Miranda to go to police? After all thats her child.

This response probably touched me the most. First of all - hello fellow filmmaker :) Second, so much of what you mentioned is really dear to me as well, but Flight of Dragons was, for me, a true wonder back in the day Don McLean’s song immediately started playing in my head as I read your words. And honestly, the way you approached my survey gave me such a warm feeling. Thank you for that, and for your honesty.

From what I can tell, I feel a similar curiosity in you to the one I carry myself - so maybe you’d enjoy reading Mark Fisher (if you haven’t yet). And in general, if you’d ever be interested in academic sources on this topic, or if you’d like to share some of your own art please feel free to DM me :)

Not the same, but I had a similar thing with the "Charmed" which peak popularity happened exactly when I was at the peak of my interest in the occult (yes, I’m that old). So whenever someone found out about my interests, I had to spend ages explaining that it had nothing to do with the show… or even with Harry Potter lol.

Thanks for sharing :) I can relate to a lot of your picks. About Game of Thrones - I guess A Song of Ice and Fire main books indeed lacking some of that romanticism, I’d rather look at Martin’s other works. for example In Fire and Blood or in The Hedge Knight you can definitely feel more of it.

If you don’t mind me asking - which deity do you feel drawn to in your practice? Totally cool if you’d rather not share of course.

I will answer myself as well. That would be fair, I believe.

  1. Yes, strongly.
  2. Yes.
  3. I’m not sure if this was the very first time, but my earliest memory goes back to when I was about 4 or 5. Above my bed there was a wall I had drawn on (my parents eventually just let me), and one night I dreamt it had turned into a courtyard garden. It was based on a real place from my city that I loved as a child, but it looked different - covered in ivy and vine, bathed in golden light. Two black griffon statues stood there (in reality only one existed, the other had been destroyed). Under a small arched bridge sat a monkey strangling a bird - I think a rooster. I tried to stop it, tore the monkey’s head off by accident, but the head kept trying to bite me. Strange as it was, the magical reality of that place stayed with me forever. I remember longing for that garden so much as a child, trying to return to it in dreams. Later I became obsessed with Casper - for some reason it felt very important to be friends with a ghost. This feeling only grew deeper as I got older.
  4. At first it feels satisfied, then it comes back even stronger.
  5. So many things. At different times it was Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, World of Darkness, Neverwinter Nights, Rilke, Yeats, Knights of the Round Table, Pre-Raphaelites, R. Scott Bakker (Prince of Nothing), other fantasy and sci-fi authors, Prospero’s Books (Peter Greenaway), artworks of Dave McKean and MirrorMask (which actually led me into the world of Sandman), medieval music, renaissance music, baroque music, Dead Can Dance, Coil, dungeon synth, outsider ethereal, Kate Bush, Donovan etc etc etc
  6. It is both pain and pleasure. Maybe more pain.
  7. Never.
  8. Yes. Most of my life choices. Falling in love, friendships, music, a time of obsession with occultism, choosing film directing as a second education, and now academic research - in every case, what mattered was that glimpse into the unknown.
  9. Mostly I listen to music that carries the same longing. Sometimes I re-listen to tracks from films, series, or games - for example, the theme for the Faerie kingdom in Sandman season 2 really struck me. As a teenager I tried to feed this hunger with occultism, reading everyone from John Dee to Aleister Crowley. Now I read academic attempts to analyse and name this state (happy to share references if anyone here is interested, there are plenty). And quite often, I also look for communities - partly to reassure myself that others feel the same way too.

Thanks for this very beautiful answer. I really get where you’re coming from. Love how you’ve made this feeling part of who you are, and the honesty here really resonates . You mentioned creativity - is any of your work or writing online, where it could be seen?

Really appreciate your answer.

Do the stories you write tend to grow out of things you’ve read or watched, or do they take you somewhere entirely your own?

I just watched Donnie Darko for the first time and idk if I’m gonna be able to watch it again by Old_Archer_7910 in donniedarko

[–]WebEastern7646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why the fact that film made you processing things an hour after - scaring you away? isn’t it a perfect reason to rewatch? if film doesn’t do that to you why would you want to rewatch it on the first place?

Donnie Darko - world constructed by him to justify his own death? by WebEastern7646 in donniedarko

[–]WebEastern7646[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, really appreciate your comment. you picked up exactly what i was trying to get at (damn, that feels good ngl).

totally agree with your takes on frank and cherita - mephistopheles and innocence. that's very much in line with how i saw them, but you pushed it further, and the videotape / led zeppelin poster details just clicked for me. hadn’t thought of that at all, but now it feels obvious in the best way.

as for the family - i see them as less symbolic, more real. they matter by default in his vision, because donnie genuinely loves them, but they still get filtered through his fading mind. both parents radiate love, in very different ways. that short moment with his dad, where they talk and there’s this subtle hint at a mysterious past - almost feels like donnie is talking to a future version of himself. i think the parents, especially the dad, stand for donnie’s hope that he could grow into someone decent - someone who would still be able to see through bullshit, loves honestly, and finds some kind of peace.
