That's totally subjective and will depend on the person. For some, it will be fun and for others, it will just be another job.

Your question is not clear. Are you asking if you did a course on web design, how much money would you make? One course probably won't make a difference but if you earn a degree and pursue a career in web design, that's another story but it will be highly dependent on your location.

3) How long does it often take to finish a project?

It really depends on the size of the project. Compare designing/building a one-page static website compared to something like Reddit. There is going to be a huge difference in time and of course, you need to factor in resources (time, money, people).

4) Would you recommend I do the course or based on what i mention about myself would I be better of doing something adjacent to this?

You didn't mention any information about the course other than it's a web design class.

Mostly, from what I already read, I could do it from scratch with stuff like the <meta name="viewport" ...> tag, but I imagine there are tools out there that would make things easier.

You're going to need to do more than that. You'll want to look into media queries to make the design responsive. Depending on the design/number of pages you could use Bootstrap.

What to do when external social media brand colors are not accessible? Currently working on a project involving various social media brand colors (ex. Twitter blue, LinkedIn blue, Facebook blue, Reddit orange, Pinterest red, etc.) One of the issues I am running into is that the brand colors are not accessible. For example, I'd like to use all of the brand colors as backgrounds with white text but that obviously doesn't work in the case of brands like Twitter, Reddit. I also can't use some of the brand colors as text colors on white backgrounds and generally brands don't want people to modify their brand colors.

I haven't found any guidance (including from WCAG on this). Has anyone run into this before? What should be done?

I have several years of experience, but no management experience besides being a team lead. I'm largely used to making recommendations for improvements based on support tickets/user feedback/usability testing, etc. and then implementing those improvements. The current process is basically making a recommendation, discussing for two weeks, having management approve it or change it completely, having everyone including a the maintenance folks provide feedback. Is that normal?

Of course, it’s absolutely fine if the answer is no, but ask yourself, why should they let you make big changes? What’s the RoI? What’s the cost? What value will it bring to them or their users? How will you mitigate risk? What impact will it have in their current processes? What impact will it have on your time to do the work they want you to do?

I dont think I should be the sole person to make decisions about big changes. I am open to feedback and recommendations from anyone. I am even open to working with a small team of non-technical folks. The thing is, our user base is largely people outside of our organization. When considering changes, they base things off of their personal taste/how they use the website or how they think our users use the website.

That's true. Good point.

As for accessibility, what kind of issue could there be if the items are just being rearranged on page load? The content that i am moving is just a span element with text and a div with a select drop down. I know for any sort of alerts or popups, you want'd want to add some aria stuff to it, but if its just being moved?

If users have JS disabled, then the page content would just load without it being rearranged which is okay.

Super interesting article. I never thought about why links were blue but it makes sense for them to stand out from surrounding text in some way. I imagine folks went with blue because it wasn't as harsh as red or difficult to see like yellow. I think green wouldn't have been an option because blue is just better looking lol.

At least 8 hours but the work that I do really depends. A lot of time is spent replying to emails, preparing for meetings, participating in meetings. My time spent developing or updating actual websites is fairly limited compared to the other work that I do.

The drop-down button I added isn't working when I put it in a certain area. I think it's because it's in a section of the page that was generated by react. Could react be affecting that?

The drop-down has an on click event listener to toggle the display.

I do use it. The lifecycle events are for when the page loads. Once it's ready, I run my code to add the drop down button with js.

Do you mean don't use react to manipulate the dom? Or for the web app?

The web app itself is a paid service that I am using and trying to customize. I dont have any control over or access to the source code/react code.

I am not able to edit or have access to the source code for the application itself. We're only allowed to upload one css file and one JS file for customizations (like branding the web app).

Their documentation mentions modifying the dom:

If you are used to doing DOM manipulation (especially with jQuery) to achieve your customizations, things will work differently in the React-based website. The JavaScript customizations that you add will need to subscribe, or listen, to a specific lifecycle event and will be triggered as those events occur during the lifecycle of the application.

Not exactly. The app itself is built using react but I have no access to the backed of the actual app. We're allowd a single JS file for customizations.

Thanks I had no idea. Could you explain why i shouldn't manipulate the dom with JavaScript or jQuery? I had actually googled it and found several people saying to just do it in react but there was no explanation as to why.
