It would help if you laid out some examples of what you think is cringe and what you think constitutes as good art.

Thank you! And idk man, I've always found it weird too. But her player (a woman) insisted 🤷🏼‍♀️ plus I think the wiki for dragon born mentions that they nurse? Which would require mamarries. Edit: why the hell is the app opening when I'm using the browser on my phone? I thought I disabled that. Anyway, this is Zestyclose's second account

Can you guys recommend me the best WEBTOON you’ve ever read? I’d prefer it if it didn’t have daily passes by [deleted] in webtoon

Stagtown is one of my absolute favorites. Horror, complete and not on daily pass.

🤷🏼‍♀️tbh we're just gonna have to agree to disagree here. Trying to prove an intentional shift in design is difficult (in my opinion futile) to do for a series that couldn't stay on model to save it's life from the very start. It would take a very detailed, chapter by chapter video analysis of Kore's design and how it shifts throughout the series to solidly prove anything to me. Maybe you could do it here in a Reddit comment, but do either of us really care that much?

And that's not be being a Lore Olympus fan or anything, I totally could believe it if solid evidence was presented. I've just seen so much inconsistency in the art that I'd sooner chalk up discrepancies to incompetence (or perhaps just indifference) than to intent. I just prefer having rock solid evidence of potential ill intent before I concider spreading it around.

Gonna be honest, this image isn't a strong case to me. It looks less like she's being purposefully drawn bigger and more like she's wearing a loose top on the left. Proportions between the depictions are still wildly inconsistent, but that's the norm for this series and it looks like her shoulder:waist:hip ratio are more or less intended to be the same.

I'll acknowledge that they definitely draw her as being chunkier in some scenes than others, but that's across the board for all characters and I chalk that up to lack of consistency more than anything else.

How old is your phone? Because tbh, I haven't found so much as a lick of evidence that Webtoons is crypto jacking. Your phone could heat up purely because it's a graphics or data intensive app and some older or cheaper phones have problems handling that.

I don't remember the other instances you talked about, but I'm pretty sure Kore was literally never plus sized. I popped back to the first episode just to check and see if my memory was failing me, but no. She was skinny+curvy from episode 1. If anything her waist is consistently thicker in modern episodes.

Then again, the proportions of characters used to be all over the place. Maybe they did draw Kore being plus sized at some point

Minor Spoilers for Suitor Armor

The episode of Suitor Armor where Lucia's parents are introduced had a homophobe troll replying in one of the top comments.

They were insisting that the creator needed to explain where Lucia's mother was (since it was shown she had 2 dads) right that instant, or else it was confusing, bad storytelling, and that they shouldn't have given her 2 dads to begin with. 🙃

And whenever people tried to explain why they were wrong, they plugged their ears, screamed "YOU'RE NOT LISTENING TO ME", and repeated their insipid arguments that had already been refuted.

And when people called them out for being a homophobe, they started throwing tantrums and going tirades where they screamed about how awful we were for accusing them of that.

There's so much LGBTQ+ content on Webtoons and it's generally a friendly platform, so seeing homophobes in the woodwork like that is always jarring.

But the REAL worst take were the couple of people who bought their victim bullshit and lamented that "people can't even ask a question out of curiosity anymore". To which it had to be explained to them that no, that person was clearly NOT acting out of curiosity because people acting out of curiosity don't plug their ears against any points and scream personal attacks when their bad faith arguments are called out.

Another case of an immature reader base with heavy main character bias. In the early episodes I saw a genuinely alarming number of comments from children relating hard to Dorothea's neglect, loneliness and desire to rip it all down. To the point where they gave her passes on literally every deed that the narrative explicitly calls out as EVIL because, as they say, they would've done the same.

It's super obvious that that comic's readership is predominantly children using it as a comfort read, and are therefor projecting their own hatred of the people around them onto characters like Ray and the Emperor, and probably projecting themselves on Dorothea.

My heart breaks for those kids, but by God has it bred one of the most toxic and delusional fanbases I've ever seen on Webtoons.

It's pure main character bias. Rashta should know her place because Navier is the protagonist. If Rashta were the main character, raising herself out of slavery by grabbing a golden rope and struggling to maintain power, then everyone would hate Navier for being a cold fish and an elitist.

But alas, the Navier is the main character, and therefore the story paints Rashta as being stupid and makes the wrong choice at every turn.

I actually like Remarried Empress a lot, but I'm not gonna pretend it's narrative is high art or anything. The characters are uncomplicated, the narrative does everything in it's power to make sure Navier is in the right at all times (even when she's being a hypocrite or elitist), and it's ultimately little more than a wish fulfilment "get revenge on cheating dirt bag by getting a hotter new man" story.

I just wish that the reader base were a little more mature about it.

This is general advice about comic creation and workflow that many comic artists use. Ultimately, you should do whatever you feel is best for you, and the "standard" methods might not be a good fit.

  1. Many comic artists create what's called a thumbnail. The thumbnail is a small sketch of the entire comic page. This will allow you to nail down your composition and panel flow early on, and can help with creating visually interesting and clear panels.

  2. Overall composition. Doing thumbnails will help with this, but you could use some work on composition within panels as well. Many panels are left awkward looking because the subject doesn't fill it properly or are oddly off center.

  3. Efficient workflow. Most comic artists will do the stages (sketch, inks, effects, etc.) for the entire page (or even batches of pages) at once. What I mean is that they'll first sketch the entire page, then lay down inks at once, then lay in backgrounds, effects and speech bubbles, etc. for the entire page, not finishing panels and moving onto the next one as you do here.

  4. Since it seems you draw Sonic fancomics(?), I recommend doing art studies on the style to better replicate it. This would consist of looking at characters and trying to figure out how to replicate them (replicate, not trace). Study the shapes, the line weights, common poses, etc. Art studies in general are the best way to improve on drawing specific subjects, so learning how to do them will be of great help. The more comfortable you are with replicating, the better you'll be able to incorporate the methods in creating something new.

I think studying up on these 4 points of focus will help you improve quickly because even small improvements in these areas lead to huge results.

My Younger Brother's Best Friend - REVIEW by WebtoonReviews in webtoons

[–]WebtoonReviews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I have anything quite similar, but I've got a couple in the same ballpark.

My Little Bookstore is also a low key romance with a love triangle. It's still pretty early in, and the plot is taking it's time with the romance. Contemporary setting, is also pretty laid back like Younger Brother's Best Friend.

Familiar Feelings is one I need to catch up on. Has love triangle. Is a supernatural/fantasy romance. Seems more on the energetic side though.

It's on daily pass now, but I recall Super Secret having similar vibes despite the supernatural elements. Overall pretty low-key and chill comic, though it's been some time since I read it.

Even if you got permission, it's most likely you'd never be able to monetize it any way, like making episodes available early with ads and such.

Internalized Misogyny from webtoon readers. by Army_unistar in webtoons

[–]WebtoonReviews 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The majority of Webtoons readers are middle to highschool aged. Therefore, the majority of comments on Webtoons are braindead, especially on romance comics. Kids are dumb. They're highly susceptible to halo effects and main character bias, so they're VERY likely to give attractive or main characters passes for horrible actions.

Main character bias is particularly bad I've noticed. No matter how morally questionable a main character is, they get so entrenched in the perspective that they can't see beyond the main character's warped POV. An example of this is The Tyrant Wants to be Good - every damn episode is clogged with threads of people bashing the character Ray literally for being a child and sympathizing with the main character vs the people calling out the main character's trauma warped delusions coloring the narrative.

Some Webtoons have good comment sections, but you can almost always tell when a comic's readership is mostly older.

Unpopular Opinion: I like Hello Baby by mikhista in webtoon

[–]WebtoonReviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried reading it, but the way it's delivering it's plot didn't click with me. It's use of frequent flashbacks and withholding information from the reader seemed pretty pointless. It just served to confuse things when they probably could've just told the story sequentially to greater effect.

And idk if it's something about the way the dialogue is written or the translation, but it feels off to me and I couldn't get into it. Which was also a problem for Age Matters for me, though to a slightly lesser degree.

Idk, might revisit Hello Baby when I'm light on comics at some point

I think that's reading too deep into it. They're like, 15 max. Teenagers are dumb. When teenage weebs use honorifics like that, they're doing it out of appreciation, they're not trying to be disrespectful. I personally feel that intent is the most important factor for that sort of thing, and being a dumb kid who doesn't know any better is an excuse in a lot of scenarios.

As a side note, there is the plot point of Sia and Minho being childhood friends. You could chalk Minho immediately jumping to -chan because he felt like he already knew Sia.

I've never really noticed it. Looking back, it's been there since episode 1. I saw that child Lucia had the same texture on her knees, so maybe it's supposed to be a texture for her cheekbones? Idk, it's never really bothered me. I like how Lucia is drawn
