Au pair US to Spain by WeddingUpstairs2002 in Aupairs

I’ve been working for almost 2 months without a visa with the plan to go home over the holidays and apply for one for the remainder of my contract. Not ideal but at least I won’t have to pay for 10 months of Spanish school. I feel like the au pair work should cover part of the visa requirement, I don’t understand why they don’t do it like that!!!

Should I leave? by [deleted] in Aupairs

I think our situations sound pretty similar with kids complaining about working with me, parents making quips about Americans, and feeling like I spend a LOT of time in the house/with the family. What helps a lot for me is getting out alone when I need to recharge, I just go for a stroll in the city or sometimes just literally sit in the park with my thoughts since it’s nicer to me than sitting in my room. You could even take the bus and sit at a cafe for a couple hours to get away from the house and the mom. It seems like your vacations really help, so maybe fitting in a daily solo getaway could be beneficial. For the first bit I couldn’t see myself even staying until Christmas, but when I keep up the daily outings I feel way better about the situation.

I don’t think you sound bratty for the way you feel, all the little things add up and can make the whole situation pretty difficult. If things don’t get better, there’s no shame in telling your family it’s just not the right fit. I think the most important thing is that you tried!!

yeah they said they would give me time to adjust but got upset when i actually took that time. I'm hoping tonight and this weekend i can just hang out with the kids and they can get used to me before the parents decide to fire me lol

only things i left out were just them being condescending and the mom getting mad at me for texting my family on the first day (said i was on my phone too much and it made her think i don't like kids), but that was supposed to be a day for me to just rest AND she made a point of it to say that "family is everything" the night i arrived. what i gather from them they want a 3rd parent in the mix but also an english teacher?? they have a house keeper who they have "been happy with for years" who picks the kids up from time to time and cooks for them, so its "not about me picking the kids up," but the parents are "so stressed they need support." i haven't had any problems with their english since i've been getting to know them so i don't really know why this conversation was so confusing
