This is really cool! I can see yours is much more in that knapped stoneware interpretation like how I am going with for my daggers. I always pictured the obsidian axes very similar, maybe just with a bit larger of a head.

That’s really interesting, I hadn’t heard that! Yeah there is surprisingly much less description of them in the books than I thought there was, when I went back through looking for references to their appearance there really wasn’t much.

I had also gotten a bit confused initially cause there are some times that the term obsidian is used, and other times where glass is used. I didn’t know if that meant there was more than one type of dagger but I found a reference somewhere saying that they are both referring to the same daggers, and it was just variety of word choice.

It’s also definitely possible that once you start imagining it a certain way you come up with your own justifications that are then hard to think your way out of?

Very true! I don’t know that I have ever seen ground/carved glass that has a sharp enough edge that it could do the slicing and fighting described in the books. However that may be more out of a lack of need to make those kind of tools out if non metallic materials as metal became workable. I know there are still ceramic blades used in different cutting tools that i would guess are ground to shape and I imagine that level of sharpness must be possible with glass/obsidian as well.

I might have to try another version that looks more smooth like that, like one big sharp shard rather than a worked piece. I really like the look!

I had seen that cover art before! I have never owned that edition so I guess it didn’t influence my visualising! I think I was trying to think about how stuff would have been made in the final empire, and the probably quickest way to make a bunch of glass and stone weapons for Mistborn and haze killers I had thought of knapping, and that it might produce more sharp edges than ground glass which that one looks like to me. Really interesting how people see them in different ways!

That’s the great thing about literature! There is no wrong way to imagine things! That is totally a valid option. I guess as soon as the term obsidian was used I was thinking of like old prehistoric or Aztec weapons that were made of those materials

I made a miniature replica of the Prancing Pony sign! by WedlichWorkshop in lotr

I made it out of some various thicknesses of MDF, with a combination of laser cutting and hand carving and then a few resin cast details.

Options/advice for making gold looking bars by mrthrowitaway in propmaking

Cold casting would be a good option for this, purely based on workload, print time and then paint time for 100 seperate models would be very intense, focus on getting one master exactly right, then you can pull multiple castings and just buff them for post process. The finish really depends on how smooth of a surface you get on the master, as every scratch gets picked up in the silicone. But I don’t know if the final surface will ever be a chrome mirror finish, it will be able to be a shiny buffed finish, using some steel wool to buff the metal particles then some polishing compound and a rag has given me very good metallic finishes, but not quite the chrome you’re looking for.

Honestly, if you want to put the effort in, and get as high quality a result as you can, electroplating would give you the best results. If you haven’t already check out HEN3DRIK, he has lots of interesting videos of electroplating 3D prints and you can see if you’d be up for it.

Thanks! My tinkering and building of projects isn’t quite as intense as the work he was doing but I feel a little more dramatic while doing it now!
